... then recording it on their phone as soon as they snap, which is sadly getting more common these days by some idiot who sees it as some sort of ‘trophy’. Jordan Pickford should be able to have a few quiet drinks in his home town with no hassle, does Joe Hart receive any stick whenever he returns to Salop for a drink or two? Also those two little s**ts who wound up Anthony Grant at Euston station earlier in the season, could you imagine if there were camera phones around in the days of Kasule and McGinlay??

They should know, and should be advised better. Just walk away from the situation. If they're going on nights out they've got enough money to book out VIP, a booth, some security measure.

Agreed with this. The bigger man always walks away. The people who are doing this are clearly in the wrong, but I think top flight sports people receive enough media / PR training to know what and where to be as well as how to act. Obviously it’s a negative indicator on today’s society that these things can happen, but also important people learn not to react.

Obviously it’s a negative indicator on today’s society that these things can happen, but also important people learn not to react. Ideally, yes, they'd walk away. But they're just ordinary, young people with limited experience of the world who happen to excel at a particular sport. Whatever "PR training" they might have had doesn't change their personality. Many of us would no doubt react in the same way and the notion that this can somehow be trained away isn't realistic. I expect there'll be more cases like this but what's the alternative? Do we really want everyone with any sort of profile to live their lives in a gated, roped off, "exclusive" environment? That's unrealistic when we could be talking about an Anthony Grant, as opposed to an England international. We could make phone footage inadmissible evidence where there are grounds to believe it was provoked or "entrapped", but that wouldn't be very satisfactory and it wouldn't stop footage being circulated. We could ask people to stop being t***s but I don't hold out much hope there …..

does Joe Hart receive any stick whenever he returns to Salop for a drink or two? I wouldn't have thought so as he is a Shrewsbury lad & a top bloke by all accounts.
Not saying Pickford isn't but the Sunderland/Newcastle rivalry is bigger than anything we have with another club & the Geordie's would have loved nothing better than winding him up.
Agreed he should have just walked away though.

we need to change the laws in this country
call it the karma law
wind someone up or abuse them they then have the right to use reasonable violence against you
I'm sure this was the law before we went into the EU ;-)

"He was called 'small arms' and 'butterfingers', but there was no sign of trouble as he posed for photographs and playfully flicked V-signs at the man who was shouting at him. "
the article says that problems occurred when he went to a different bar and the abuse was directed at his girlfriend
"A source told Sportsmail: 'Someone verbally abused Jordan's partner and he flipped. He went for him but did not hit him and the video looks worse than it actually was. The whole thing was over in six or seven seconds.
'But there is no sugar-coating this, Jordan had been drinking and that probably didn't help in that he's reacted to the abuse. He is not happy that he got himself in that situation. Jordan had been mixing happily with fans before that and there was no issue until someone targeted his partner.'
considering the rivalry between Sunderland and Newcastle and some people who seem to try and wind up someone well known and post it online or sell it to a newspaper then there was a risk this would happen, i am surprised he was not in a private VIP area with some security, whilst not condoning his behaviour who among us would not react if someone stated verbally abusing your wife / partner? if the article is correct and he did not hit anyone police investigation seems a bit over the top.

If he'd have booked a private booth he would then be accused of being a big time Charlie, if you give out stick don't moan when it comes back.

Which I was told is exactly what Jack Grealish has to do if ever he fancies a night out in Birmingham. Admittedly it was second-hand information but sounds believable. Security escort for him and his party, pre-booked VIP areas sealed off. Can be several thousand pounds for a night out. I can well imagine he has no choice, he's the big fish in a small pond for idiots to get at. Didn't Andy Carroll get dogs' abuse when he was at Newcastle? Must be part of the attraction to play for a London club. Such a huge place, and not uncommon to see famous people. Makes it a little easier to not stand out so much.

Can imagine that with a place like Brum, lots of decent sized clubs, with large supporter numbers in a close proximity, so anyone who does well is automatically a target for abuse from morons, it's not the most affluent of cities so, again, jealous comes into play. Plus players at that end of the spectrum are easier targets given their media exposure, a mate of mine was in a pub in Wrexham one evening with then town players Ian Dunbavin & Darren Moss...no one really batted an eyelid because half the people didn't know who they were
