80,000 attendance apparently. Sunderland just gone 1-0 up. Great scenes around Baker Street / Marylebone earlier with both sets of fans enjoying a day out. Not everyone’s cup of tea the EFL trophy but an opportunity for two of footballs greatly supported teams to have a day out.

85,021 in attendance.
A record attendance for the competition.
The suits at the EFL will be mightily pleased.

It matters to the fans of both clubs, of course, or most of them anyway, but winning a degraded competition on penalties seems so unsatisfactory.

Congratulations to Portsmouth and to Craig Mac for the penalty save. Commiserations to Sunderland. The battle continues now between these two for promotion and league position. The atmosphere today must have been electric with such a huge turnout.

I disagree with the introduction of U-21 teams in the competition, but then again I disagree with a lot of modern football. Pleased To see two ‘proper teams’ make the final.

Its a competition which gives supporters of lower league clubs the chance to support their club at Wembley. We may not like Wembley but to our kids and grandkids Wembley is an iconic place which unless you support a premiership club you stand little chance of visiting to support your home town club. Im sure the youngsters of todays finalists have had a great day out and will now know how their parents or grandparents felt on their visits to Wembley during the glory days of both clubs.

My point is that the competition no matter what you think of it gives supporters of the lower clubs a chance to experience Wembley. The competition is not perfect and wont be until the farce of allowing the under 23 teams into it is scrapped but still a good competition for the cash flow of clubs.

Well I’m really pleased for McGillivray. Having done everything asked of him last year to get us there he was then dropped. So I’m pleased this has been his year.

Oh I agree, Wembley is a corporate s**te hole and all that is wrong with modern day football and I've seen us lose there 4 times (guess which game I missed) I just can't get past the fact people go and support this competition in it's current format.

You can have a day out in London any Sunday of the year without supporting this abomination of a competition. You really do need to drop it. It’s obviously important to 85,000 fans of the two clubs else they wouldn’t have bothered turning up and paying decent money to get it. Its not an ideal competition how it’s currently run but I doubt it’s going anywhere anytime soon.

The play offs provide that opportunity for lower league clubs and far more meaningfully. This competition (with or without under 21 teams) diminishes the specialness of Wembley, just like playing FA Cup semi finals and Spurs home games there. I take your point that it’s not the same perspective for younger supporters but there can’t be the same mystique and possibly once-in-a-lifetime sense of occasion that Wembley once held for most football fans.

Two poor teams.
Our team last season would have beaten both with ease

Its not an ideal competition how it’s currently run but I doubt it’s going anywhere anytime soon. Not as long people continue to pour money into its coffers in their thousands. Anybody that attends a Checkatrade Trophy game is a scab. End of. If Shrewsbury had of been there... so would I. Same as I have been for every one of our Wembley games, (and hundreds of others since 1979.) If games that matter to me. I will be there. I am sorry if that offends you. You are welcome to your opinion, and I don’t even mind a little bit of persuasion in your tone. But to call someone a scab for supporting their team (if you agree with the rules of a particular competition or not) crosses the line. I don’t think under 23 teams should be allowed in the competition. However I also don’t believe it is the first step of premier league ‘B’ teams in our league in the way that hosting the World Cup in the USA was not the start of football being played in 6. X 15 minute periods as was suggested at the time, (or a list of other suggestion / half baked ideas that never happened.) However if it does, and Shrewsbury end up playing in some midlands feeder league in 10 Years ... I will still go to those games as well. Your welcome to your opinion, and to express it. But to call all those who would support their team in a game of football a scab is a step too far.
