Yes you could argue he is (although he has played in league football before), I'm using Martin's terminology and really highlighting the contradiction of people wanting a proven goalscorer at this level, yet listing people who have never played at this level. What people actually mean is they want us to spend money on a striker.
And the definition of a punt to me is different dependent on the club. For example Swansea & Sunderland are clubs linked with Shankland, £250k is small fry for them and worth a punt, gamble or whatever you want to call it. For us it would have been a record signing and had it not worked out then people would have been criticising Roland, Brian etc, I doubt many people would have said "oh well, it was worth a gamble".
We wasted £100k on John Dungworth, but fans at the time seemed to accept he was worth the gamble, even though he subsequently turned out to be a dud. Trevor Birch, Nathan Elder and Tyrone Barnett are 3 others who come to mind.
Dungworth still managed 17 goals in 86 appearances, by this Seasons standards prolific and he was playing at a higher level.
