... it wouldn’t be New Years Day but Groundhog Day.
What a depressing start to new year, aimless hoofball, no clue in the final 3rd, total incohesion from front to back.
6 points from 6 games for Ricketts and back in the thick of a relegation battle. Let’s hope he’s got a few rabbits in his hat this January, as if we carry on like that we could well go down.
But atleast he claps and waves, and shows some animation on the touchline...

Agreed. One of the worst watches of the season. I wanted to stick needles in my eyes in that first half, absolute crap.
What’s happened to Docherty? I realise many felt he was good at Sunderland but I disagree & think that’s 3 in a row completely below par now.

Now three points off the bottom four, exactly where we were on November 3rd after John Askey's last league game in charge.

Both teams looked very tired after the xmas exertions. That’s what Ricketts said in his post match interview, although there was only one team trying to win it today, but couldn’t break down a very stubborn and organised defence, but Salop were just a little hesitant in key areas (when Fey was in a great position to shoot but just took that fraction too long and the opportunity was gone) and maybe that was down to tiredness.

Not good to watch that today as we seem to have taken a step back from the more open and attacking play we saw with the temporary management duo in charge.
In fairness Fleetwood's set-up was designed to stop is playing and worked really well for them, but felt too many in our side had off games and aren't playing as well as they were 3-4 weeks ago. In particular the pressing game we were playing seems to have gone and that's a big disappointment. Also there is still the fact that Askeys signings were so random its difficult to work out exactly what style of play suits us best and what the strengths of the side are.
For me I'm afraid both Sadler and Waterfall are looking limited in this league in terms of their distribution from defence, and none one the midfield four are really going to beat the opposition with pace of a bit of skill so that limits our attacking options. A side set up well against us shouldn't really be to troubled by us, and Fleetwood were just that today.
Hopefully the transfer window will see some of the weaknesses in the team addressed - otherwise its going to be a long second half to the season

Askey shouldn’t have been sacked in my opinion. If we’re totally honest, since Rickets has been appointed, we’ve gone backwards. Performances are poor, individuals are playing poor, and we’re not getting results. Were the performances that bad under askey? I feel as a whole we played decent football, we just weren’t getting the results. They started to come, but due to some, we decided to get rid and replace him with a manager with next to no managerial experience. Feel free to bring this back up if we somehow manage to sort ourselves out under Rickets, but I for one highly doubt we will.

I'm torn, on the one hand I'd love to be very sarcastic and remind certain fans that results havent picked up since Askey has left and that he will shortly be coming up to 10 games so he is running out of time if we go by the same timeframe as those using that as a benchmark for Askey. But in reality, Rickets inherited an average, imbalanced squad and results/performances have reflected that, 1 win, 3 draws, 2 defeats, some decent performances but some dire ones thrown in too.
Give him a chance, for those already writing off/doubting Rickets, be realistic FFS. And as much as I'd love to join in with the mocking of people who drove out Askey, I dont think it does anyone any favours.

Let’s just wait and see what the January sales bring before we crucify yet another manager after five minutes in the job

Absolutely the right decision to move on from Askey. Whether Ricketts was the right choice remains to be seen.
Didn't surprise me today that we were a tad flat, not only have we played a shed load of games of late but they put one hell of a shift in at Sunderland to get that point. We have to improve and I can only think that will come about with some recruitment this January. Ricketts doesn't come across as someone who would look to say a bad word about the players currently within the club but I'm sure he must know that it needs improving to be a success at this level. Sure we will know more about Ricketts as a manager once he is able to put his own side together. Hopefully he will be giving the chance to do so sooner rather than later.

s**te game but small positives are we never looked like losing and the4-3-3 of the second half looks to be a better bet long term.
Ricketts will still be learning about the players he’s inherited, Sadler and Waterfall do the basics well but see us turn over possession too easily. Same with Arnold it’s not a stable base to play out from, far too many aimless long balls.
The heavy fixture list clearly played a part with a number of players looking not fully at the races (Docherty, Bolton, Norburn, Laurent,Okenabirhie the most notable for me), it’s all well and good saying ‘they’re professional they know what to expect’ but I don’t think there was a lack of trying we were just that half a second too slow or needing that extra touch.
Two hours of my life I won’t get back but let’s not over-react, it’s a point at home and onto the FA Cup. Need to hold our nerve if we go 2 or 3 games without a win, likewise not talk about the play offs every time we beat a poor team. There’s a lot of very average teams in this league and we are one of those.

i think there is more goodwill for Rickets than Askey but he can only do what he can do withe squad he has got.this whole season has been dogged with inconsistent performances but today was dire and reminded me of the dreadfully boring games under Peters.when Docherty has a poor game and does not go on charging runs and open up teams.we seem to revert to long balls.

A commonly held view when John Askey was in charge was that this is a very good group of players who were badly under performing, i.e. it was the fault of the manager/coach. Ricketts inherited a team in good form on a good run of results under Coyne/Ramsey but both form and results have largely evaporated since Ricketts took charge. Yes it's early days but this is a worrying trend.

I am genuinely torn.
I got drenched at Fleetwood, and suffered the first half performance at their place, which could have been as bad a half as I have seen for years in any sport.
Today was better. So we have improved.
But we would have been better at home under Askey I am sure also.
Overall I feel a change was probably needed, as I do feel our squad is better than the position we sit. But so far I am not overwhelmed by Ricketts and worry he is too direct, and whilst he does make earlier changes (and clap the fans) I feel our caretakers were doing a much better job which adds expectations to SR as we had shown improvements
Will interesting to see what he does with the transfer window and how he sets his team up to play after a couple of signings. I hope there is a distinct plan in mind and he has just been trying to pick up as many points as possible until he can sign a couple of new faces and set his team up as he wants.

Any performance or result at the moment is divided responsibility between our current and previous manager. I’m in no doubt JA wasn’t the right man and stick by his sacking 100%, I’m not saying I’m convinced by Ricketts either but I’m behind him and whilst he’s only had the players in training for a few weeks and hasn’t signed a single player at the club I don’t see how we can judge him yet whatsoever.

I'm a firm believer that the sign of a good coach is their ability to improve the group of players they inherit.

But in reality, Rickets inherited an average, imbalanced squad Not arguing with you PS, but it’s worth pointing out that Askey inherited virtually no squad at all and so had to rebuild the lot from scratch.

I disagree that he inherited an imbalanced squad. The squad has options, mostly decent options, in all positions.

I can't believe we haven't won all 6 games under SR as the team he inherited were clearly better than most teams in our league, and surely to lose on Saturday to a 12 months ago premiership club then I for one will be calling for his head. Also his body language is definitely saying he doesn't want to be here, and he will be held fully responsible for not signing on loan a 20 goal a season striker currently banging them in for a championship team. Come on Roland sort this mess out and get us back where we belong, 30 odd years ago, or on FIFA 19.

I disagree that he inherited an imbalanced squad. The squad has options, mostly decent options, in all positions. We have a ridiculous amount of central midfielders which is why we have been forced into playing a diamond Up front we have 4 strikers but take our Fey then do the other 3 inspire you? We have two left backs, yet most people say we need a new left back We have two goalkeepers, neither inspire confidence We have no pace in the central of defence On the wingers side, we are heavily reliant on Whalley, Gilliead has been poor generally and Eisa has not forced his way into the first team, although that is probably down to us being forced into the 4 central midfielders.

I genuinely cannot believe there’s people slating the manager .
Haynes Laurent Angol Holloway Gilliead Kennedy Loft Arnold Coleman
All absolutely bang average at best players who aren’t ever going to play at a level higher than this !!! The s**te askey left behind needs sweeping up first. You can’t polish a t*** . 💩 . There’s not a decent left back , goalkeeper , or winger at the club . Give the guy a chance to bring some in .

Yep which is why I was saying Askey should have been given longer. However the more I see of the squad the less I am convinced by them (see my post above).

No, the deed is done now and we will be ok with SR and need to stick behind him. I would have given JA longer, but would have been speaking to him about training and getting in a more up to date coach and coaching methods or promoting from within as it turned out. Maybe he was spoken to about it and put his head in the sand?
