We lost the services of my least favorite town boss, Paul Simpson. An arrogant man, never accepted blame for his own failings, spent huge sums of money by our standards, brought in Kris Bright, oversaw 2 awful cup exits to non-league sides, abusive towards supporters, seemed more interest in media work than coaching, got VERY lucky with teams around us getting points deductions (we should have finished short of the play-offs during the "Grant Holt XI" season) and generally made turning up to watch town a bit of a chore. Here is a reminder of his most diabolical hour a month before he got the chop.... news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/shrewsbury/8592509.stm

What a wasted opportunity that season was. I went to a couple of Q&A's when Simpson was in charge. Never warmed to the man. Didn't trust the youth system, because it may only produce one player every few seasons and didn't justify the outlay and thought African players were too laid back to play in the lower leagues of England.
The wrong man to manage our Club if ever there was one.
I actually remember saying as much on here when he was appointed.

Wasn't Micky Adams very close to getting the job here before RW opted for Simpson? Must admit I thought Simpson was the right man before he came here purely based on his achievements at Carlisle, this was before I realised what a horrible little man he was

Recall the boxing day game vs Maccelesfield - town were not even close to matching them and we scored a VERY lucky last min equaliser......I was too embarressed to celebrate.
When the second goal went in against Darlo it felt like a weight had been lifted as that was when you realised he was a dead man walking.

He received some appalling abuse from the fans of our club.
It's a shame we didn't go up with him. It does surprise me somewhat how he ended up as assistant manager at Newcastle!

When I heard the rumours that Simpson would be appointed as our manager I was not happy, I'd heard stories about his personality from fans of clubs he'd been associated with here in the North West.
I remember suggesting on this message board that our motto should be 'ABS' - anyone but Simpson.

The 'performance' against Staines in the cup must rank as the most pathetic display by a Town side ever.

He gave his own playing staff more abuse than we ever did. Well he's not at Newcastle now is he? If it wasn't for his pal Steve he'd still in Portugal or at Northwich.

When he was appointed, I was prepared to give him a chance, and I was proved right.

He was welcomed as a returning hero when he was appointed with "brolly man" at Derby. Strange tastes people have!

He was also asked by a fan as to why he wasn't playing Marc Pugh.
'Oh I know all I need to know about Marc Pugh thank you' he snapped back.
Muppet.

I remember the Stockport county game away, the "lets all do the Simpson chant" was the most fun moment during the game and most satisfying we won 4-0.

There are very few players & staff that commit themselves to our club that I don't give wholehearted support to. Paul Simpson was one of those few.
I was delighted at his appointment. Had already taken Carlisle up and for a while did a decent job at PNE in the championship. Had them top for a spell if I recall?
I've been a town fan for long enough to realise that invariably our managerial appointments go one way. We know all about Holt and the investment in the squad but it wasn't that which annoyed me about Simpson. Almost every interview after a defeat he rolled out the same 'players not doing their jobs properly'. Then he committed the cardinal sin of turning on the fans. Sure what happened at the Macc game with a few idiots was beyond the pale but to tar us all with the same brush after that seemed churlish. Always pointed the finger (usually at Chris Humphrey) and never took any responsibility for some dreadful results, something that our current manager did as recently as this week.
Many who met him reckoned he was a really good guy and I'm sure that's the case, don't wish the guy any ill-will. I'm sure he put as much effort into making it work as any of our recent managers. Just left scratching my head how he could never get a result on the road.

Him. Bickerton. The chairman.
A deeply unpleasant trio.

Recall Bickerton rocking that pinstripe suit at the Stafford Rangers away game.

Perspective needed here. Simpson left us at least a league club for GT to successfully take up the reigns. I go back seven years before to the real low point of STFC history when that Muppet ratcliffe took us out of the league. Can't say I was that impressed with the Simmo spell but compared to the mess that was the Ratcliffe era his tenure was almost deemed salad days.

Simpson was a little gimp, but perhaps he suffered slightly having been at the helm during a time in which The Club's relationship with its supporters hit rock bottom, and our identity was being systematically destroyed by the powers that be.

Always felt the appointment of Simpson was the first sign of how removed from the modern world of management had become
On paper Simpson was OK after reasonable spells at Stockport and Preston, but even with those clubs his ability to throw his toys out of the pram and blame others, including the fans, was well known.
Clearly we had a club didn't research that before hand and to me it's one of the biggest mistakes of the last 20 years. Had a decent boss been brought in then and given the same financial backing as Simpson I honestly think we could be a well established League One side
Definitely a massive opportunity missed when Simpson was appointed, one of many made around that time

There are several reasons to take umbridge with Mr Simpson, many of which are detailed above. Simply, for me, any person who believes that Jake Simpson was a better player than Marc Pugh has no place in football management.

I seem to recall Macc being denied a clear goal when the ball was well over the line too - may have even been right after we equalised. Even some of our fans were berating the Lino it was that bad.
