Both in the Championship Neil Redfearn at Rotherham .... lasted 4 months, P21, W5, D2, L14 www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35524363Paul Clement at Derby .... lasted 8 months, P33, W14, D?, L? www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35528402Derby currenly 5th in Championship and he wasn't even sacked due to results .... Derby Statement. Morris said the club had worked with Clement to " develop a plan" that made it clear promotion was not a priority this season. He added the "clear" plan was "briefed" to the club's supporters, players and sponsors in the summer.
"The priorities were building on the Derby way and style of football enjoyed in the past two seasons, adding depth and strength to our playing squad; and, developing and improving player and team performance," he said.
"Sadly, on these measurements, we have not made enough progress and that is why we have decided to part company with Paul.
"I firmly believe that we have one of the very best first-team squads in this league. Our players are highly talented professionals who are more than capable of winning games at this level and beyond."

The manager who I'm absolutely amazed is still in his job is Steve Davis of Crewe.
Obviously the Crewe Board are a very understanding lot. They've only had 3 managers since 1983! Whereas in that time Leeds United for example have had 18.
Mind you, Powell, Westwood, Murphy and Clayton have all been sold for large sums of money during his tenure.
Davis is Number 6 in the list of long serving managers. Amazingly MM is already up to number 25!

All is clear , RW is clearly a follower of the Derby guys philosophy . Promotion is not a priority this season for us too . In fact it's the bloody opposite , relegation is almost certainly our priority and MM is just following along the lines of building the Shrewsbury way ( translated as the right DNA ) Adding strength to our playing squad means getting as many loan players in as possible . MM hasn't quite got the hang of developing and improving player and team performance but that's a minor detail which he will be addressing next season in league 2 . Well done RW . We have made progress in most of these areas and therefore MM will be staying put , unlike the poor t**t at Derby who didn't do what he was told !

Perhaps Crewe recognise that, barring the odd exceptional spell in either direction, their life will be spent in Leagues 1 & 2. Taking the long view, it doesn't much matter which one of those two they're in - sooner or later it'll be the other one! And even taking a short term view, Crewe have become hardened League 1 survivors under Davis. If Davis is doing a good job in developing good young players for onward sale and thereby keeping the club afloat (very much the Crewe model), then why would they sack him? As an outsider, that seems to me a realistic and sensible strategy. As an irrational fan, it might be hard to take. I suspect a lot of lower league clubs would be happy with that, although they couldn't say so publicly. Interesting contrast with Leeds, who seem to have had a lot more than 18 managers since 2000, never mind since 1983. Pound for pound though, over the last, say, 20 years, who has been the most successful - Crewe or Leeds? If you judge success on a less narrow view than simply how high up the leagues a club is, I suspect it might be Crewe.

Leeds have had a few caretaker managers too. I didn't include them.
