Quote from the BBC footie site. Torquay United thinking of moving to a new ground.
Torquay manager Kevin Nicholson has spent the best part of the last decade with the Gulls as both a player and coach.
"It would be a massive step forward for the club," he told BBC Sport.
"Having your own new stadium, you only have to look at Shrewsbury Town, where they dropped to and where they are now and how their new stadium has played a part in that.

They'll be starting from a lower level.
They'll almost certainly be at Telford's level next season in the National League South.
And whatever the faults of Plainmoor, they still have the "Boots and Laces" Social Club where away fans can have a drink before the game.

I bet that will do a roaring trade with the masses of away fans from the likes of Hemel Hempstead. Still there will be the local derby with Truro City to look forward to.

Didn't they build a new stand recently? They built a new main stand three or four years ago I think.

I'd call that a club that isn't set up to work at L1 level.

It's a club set up to work perfectly at this level. If our operation allows it's manager to have the 9th highest playing budget in the division and still stay within the wage cap we are more than adequately positioned at our current level. The onus is very much on the manager and coaching staff to get the best out of more than ample resources available.

The last few jaunts at this level would suggest otherwise..........Especially with scouting/recruitment (am currently waiting for us to be linked with Nile Ranger and Eric Tinkler as they appear to be the only ex-Blackpool/Barnsley players we've not had a crack at signing!).
Also, as said several times before, its all well and good releasing a soundbyte like "We have the ninth best budget" in a press release THREE DAYS before a scheduled SP meeting where that boast could have been scrutinised. I'd like to know:
1. How did we obtain that figure? 2. When was it taken (Last week? Last May? August? Etc). 3. Do we still have the 9th highest budget? 4. Were the Lewis/Ginnelly transfer funds used to fuel this budget? 5. Are we using 100% of this budget? 6. How much are we spending on Loans? 7. Will it be sustained into next season regardless of division?
Also, budget aside how do our facilities compare with others, coaching style, general reputation etc?

The past isn't a true barometer for the present. The recruitment policy fiasco has not been repeated. Under no circumstances would GT have been allowed to bring in players like Black, Whitbread, Welles, Grandin etc. Now we can challenge MW's claim if we like especially if it doesn't fit with your current view of how the club is run. However, we must ask why make such a bold statement if a) it's completely untrue or b) it praises a chairman, whom if the rumours are to be believed, MW had issues with. We can only assume that clubs are privy (for transparency reasons) to the information submitted to the FL via the FFP ruling. This appears to be a fairly fluid process so we cannot expect our 9th place to be a constant. Since the statement was made we've shipped out Lawrence, McKnight, Patterson, Ellis, Collins and Barrett. Bringing in Welles, Whitbread, Mangan and Grandin. Where this leaves us now is anyone's guess, but MW's point still stands. The club has the financial means to not only support L1 football comfortably, but also the desire to make those funds freely available if needed. Imagine if RW had a headrush and allowed the Woods, Goldson & Cup money to be ploughed back into the playing squad? Wonder what 'position' we'd be in then?

The past isn't a true barometer for the present. The recruitment policy fiasco has not been repeated. Under no circumstances would GT have been allowed to bring in players like Black, Whitbread, Welles, Grandin etc. Would not be so sure - we have ALOT of loan/short term players on the books, most of whom are very experinced (average age of an STFC employed player this term is around the 30 mark). Meaning yet another costly rebuild is looming in the summer, which begs the question - how will we fund yet another influx of new players (I assume the club is heading for another loss) and how will recruit them as we appear to have a sadly wanting scouting network/regional links. As for the budget comment as said before its a shame the SP never got a chance to query that statement. Also, budgets are all well and good but how is it spent? - are we lacking a bit of nous when it comes to negotiations etc. Could we give the next crop of young players a go next season? I for one would feel FAR more happier, even in our current league position, if I was watching a team with a few good prospects for the future rather than players who are the wrong side of 28/30 and who will almost certainly be off in the summer...

Turner did always say that the Chairman gave him funds, but chose not to spend it as he thought he wasn't getting value for money from his signings
Looking at our recent signings it looks like Mellon has taken the risk of older players, probably on higher wages, in the hope that keeps us up

Our scouting network/regional links in Barnsley and Blackpool are second to none!

In fact 16 players are, whilst Southend might want Barnett. 4 loans to return too. However, as already mentioned, both Tootle and Sadler will have a year left. Are they to become next year's MD and Vernon?
