Currently none of our centre halves seem to be able to form a solid pairing at the heart of the defence... None of them look comfortable and certainly none of the them look as good as they did in the 3 man system last year. Is it the lack of Goldson's organisational skills that is the main issue or is the level of league 1 exposing them? Does MM need to stick to who he thinks is his best pair, ignore a few mistakes and give them a run of games or does he need to revert to a 3, knowing that the squad doesn't really have any quality wing backs. It's certainly an issue and I'm becoming more convinced that we need to enter the loan market for another experienced centre half and/or wing back?

3 centre halves Ellis Grando NKP, and a new left wing back............Sadler isn't quick enough as a full back never mind a wing back.

I still don't understand why we changed to 442 in pre-season.

3-5-2 worked well against Barnsley and Southend despite Grandison errors. Those cost us against Crewe. He then got injured. Hence the return to 4-4-2. MM obviously hasn't enough trust in Smith yet. When Grandison returned I cannot see any reason why we didn't return to 3-5-2 yesterday particulary with Brown (who did a decent job against Barnsley) now being available as well

3 centre backs with two wing backs bombing up and down the wing grimmer style. We can do the former but cannot do the latter with current staff.

Didn't go yesterday, but like quite a few others the defence is the thing that concerns me most
I really can't see that Sadler and Tootle are any improvement on the defenders we had last year, either as full backs or as wing backs. It's clear opposition sides now target them, although our midfielders give them little cover either
Goldson going seems to have hit the central defence too and I've a nagging doubt that Grandison doesn't have some long term injury which is impacting on his form. Ellis has been our best defender this season and seemed harsh to drop him yesterday
Think we need to sort out the formation of the defence quickly and ideally get some extra quality in there. If we start shipping 2-3 goals a game we are in massive trouble

I'd be tempted to go with something like this away from home...
Leutwiler Tootle Ellis NKP Sadler Ogogo Lawrence Cole Kaikai JLAA
Collins
Obviously it doesn't have to be Collins up top and Clark could take one of the midfield roles depending on form, injury etc. Probably gives us the best balance we can hope for in what is a bit of an unbalanced squad.
Ah, that hasn't come out quite how I typed it - it basically has Ogogo and Lawrence as two holding midfielders, Cole as the attacking CM and JLAA /Kai Kai playing wide of Collins in the centre forward position.
Kind of a 4-2-1-3

2 or 3? Has anyone considered 9?? Look, I know we're all disappointed but getting GP back in probably isn't the answer! That said, we'd probably have at least four left backs on the books so at least Mat Sadler would have a bit of competition for his place.

We cannot play with two fullbacks/ wing backs because Sadler and Tootle haven't got enough wind between them to fart . Sadler in particular looks absolutely f.cked after one or two runs ,usually in pursuit of an opposing wide man who has left him for dead . When that happens NKP and Grandison shift over , NKP to try and cover Sadler and Grandison to cover NKP , leaving a huge gap with Tootle not knowing what to do . The midfield lads should drop in but when they do , and if we manage to win the ball , the gap between them and our forward(s) is huge . Consequently the ball is lost and we are under pressure once again. We need two fit and quick full backs , playing a 5-3-2 system which would work if we had the right players . The reason it isn't going so well is because out two full backs aren't good enough . It would also help if we had at least one flyer up front i.e . someone like Whalley who can get behind defenders and make them turn. Perhaps even play him up front off Barnett or Collins or even McAlinden ( what's happened to him by the way ). Whatever , our present set up isn't good enough and you can say what you like about MD , at least he had a physical presence and wasn't bullied off the ball unlike Sadler . I lost count of the times Sadler had to try and wrap his arms around his opponent to stop him . At this rate we could break the world record for the number of penalties conceded in a season.

Trouble is I dont think we've got the players now to play any system.
3 at the back suited us but with goldson gone & no new cb signed we dont have much choice there & both wing backs have been ditched for 2 conventional full backs.
But not sure we have or Mellon has faith in 2 wide midfielder for a 442
And dont think any of our strikers are linking up with another either

The defence should not have grandison or sadler anywhere near it. They are the source of our problems at the back. From left to right tootle Ellis nkp Patterson. Midfield to much of the same ie cole Kaikai and two others cole and kaikai. One or both need to be dropped for a git of grit in the middle, like Black I would personally go with 3 Brown Clark Black. And up top Mcalinden collins vernon.

Difficult to assess whether 3 at the back looked any more secure last night with all the changes and the continuation of the errors. Not sure that MM can find a solution within the current squad. IMO we should enter the loan market for a centre half rather than wait until January. I was surprised when MM said in interview this week that NKP won't be fully recovered/fit until about January as IMO he's the one that has been most reliable or less error stricken so far. Certainly don't want him breaking down.
