A short trip home thankfully for me.
Coventry are a good side. Quick and incisive when going forward. No doubt they'll be challenging for promotion this season.
What an incredibly abject performance from us though. For all the possession football and pretty passes we didn't have any threat in the final third. Collins likes to come to find the ball, pulling out wide, coming into midfield etc but in doing so leaves a gaping hole in the forward positions. This needs addressing. The midfield need to get in and behind the forwards, and the forwards need to have the confidence that the ball will find them rather them going to look for it.
Another penalty conceded today! Suicidal defending on the stroke of half-time. That's what 5 or 6 conceded this season and it's only just October. A huge issue. It's not always the referees fault before someone says.
Only Halstead can come out of today's game with any credit in my opinion. Without a few good saves the score line would have been very embarrassing indeed
I was going to raise the subject of Matt Sadler after the Blackpool game but never got round to it. After today's game I'll be honest he looks past it. I don't see him as an improvement on Mickey Demetriou, I fact I'd much prefer to have him back playing. A few others raised the same point after the game. Which raises the point, what exactly has Mickey D done wrong? Something behind the scenes perhaps? Certainly playing wise he was a revelation last season and played a huge part in a record of clean sheets. It's about time Mellon came out and explained all. He deserves a go, and I'm afraid Sadler is getting frequently caught out of position and done for pace.
Today was one of those days when you come away and wonder why you bothered going. Yes it was that bad.
Mr Mellon has plenty to address.

Your comments about Sadler are no more than I've been saying for quite some time now.
The apologists for Sadler say that he needs time to adjust to Division 1, whilst conveniently airbrushing out the fact he has already had plenty of experience of League 1 with both Walsall and Crawley (138 games in total). I'm not saying that MD would have done any better (though it's hard to imagine him doing worse), but we'll never know as he clearly is not going to be given a game.

Oh and MD got 2 votes as well and as we all know he wasn't even there!! Surely it's worth giving him a go when the loan is over if it's not too late by then?

disagree with your comments about the keeper a thought he should have done better with the 3rd goal. You can't be beaten with a shot in the centre of the goal.
We lost a game against a team that is better than us, nothing to moan about, they just have better players.
on to the next games.

MD is on a 6 month loan to Cambridge which puts him out of the picture until March 1st.
His contract probably has a no recall clause too, MM was so keen to get rid of him.

I didn't want to write off Sadler early on and expected him to improve with games, unfortunately it just isn't happening.
I don't thing Demetriou is the answer as he struggled defensively at times in Lg2, but it's about time Mellon sorted this problem out.

Sadler wasnt responsible for the penalty it was nkp. Watched him intently during the se on half and saw Sadler lost for pace positioning and misplaced passes. Not his best day and although Lawrence worked hard at taking the ball and responsibilities as captain he also had too many misplaced passes for me .

People need to get over this Mickey Demetriou thing. Mellon has clearly stated that he isn't in his plans and has offered him to other clubs, he's not going to play for us again, Sadler, Brown and NKP are all ahead of MD in the chase for LB position so just get over it, Mellon has made his choice and although I agree Sadler has been poor, I thought MD was a weak link in our team all of last season, the love in for him needs to stop, it seems as though he's getting better and better in peoples eyes without even playing!

Brown is no more than a makeshift left back.
NKP would be wasted at left back. It would also mean we wouldn't have the personnel to play 3 at the back (don't even THINK of suggesting Sadler plays there).
That just leaves Sadler..unless we play Tootle on the left (he's played there many times for Crewe) and bring in Patterson at right back.
Loan market anyone?

Very disappointed with our overall display.
After 30 mins we looked comfortable and looked the better side. The first goal got coventrys tails up and not sure whether halstead could or should have done better. But in fairness he had a good game with three important saves that kept the score down. We were lucky that we didn't concede two more penalties with rash tackles.
Most disappointing was mms reluctance to change the team or shape at halftime, bizarrely waiting until three down before making a sub, and then swopping like for like with Barney on for Collins.
Coventry won by having players with pace who ran at our defence and cut us open time and again. We had no one prepared to run at their defenders but kept the one man that could, whalley, on the bench.
Coventry were nothing special apart from a couple of pacey forwards. However we are toothless upfront and could have played till midnight and not scored....
Come on Mellon get it sorted

I remember my Dad seeing us beaten 9 - 1 at Coventry and thought history might repeat itself.
We couldn't handle the Cov front two who did things I can't imagine any pairing of our strikers being able to do, the difference in class was huge.
Before the game Cov fans were worried about us putting their young 'keeper under pressure, they needn't have been.

No the Cov fans won't know how good their keeper is yet - he wasn't tested enough.

First point of note is that three of Coventry's excellent attacking players are loaned in...
Secondly, every outfielder played rubbish for us. That includes Sadler, but it's not limited to him, personally I thought Grandison had a mare.

Cannot believe what we produced today - pitiful. First of all let me say I do completely accept Coventry are and were today a much better team than us, they possessed quality that quite simply we don't. Armstrong was way above league one standard, exceptional. However, I do not accept that they didn't have to be at their best to win comfortably. They 'overcame' a fairly even first 20 and then found enough fire in their belly to cut us open at will, but it wasn't hard. Grandison was abject and NKP can't get away scot free all the while when he really wasn't much better.
The game ended at 1 0. We were that devoid of ideas, energy, urgency. First ten minutes I felt JLAA looked knackered, the rest soon followed suit. Kaikai was poor and lethargic, Cole possibly a marked but tired man, Ogogo a liability with the simple stuff at times and LL always showing, but unreliable. I always give the brave ones who carry on trying things a bit of leeway but by the end I wished he would stop showing for it just to avoid his tendency to give it straight back and fail in his slow chase to retrieve. Make no mistake we were second to everything.
It's hard not to get down about today - it was so depressing. We were dominant against Crewe, Blackpool and terrific against Rochdale for most part. My optimism of our team being a young, pacy and exciting one can't go after an away outclassing at a better team but it brought me back down to earth with a bump for sure. We were none of those things. And defensively even worse than previous.
But Coventry won at a canter. Mellon made no attempt to impact the game with substitutions. Clark was very harshly dropped. Collins yet again a passenger and everyone way, way off the pace. We gave up the game. We had one shot. That I cannot accept. Can't be arsed with the JPT, we need 3 points again quickly after that.

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure demetriou is not going to get a game for the town again but suggesting we should "get over it" is b******s. I thought demetriou was a weak link last year myself but at least he had some pace. Sadler is out of the Nick Chadwick, cart horse, footballing school? As long as Sadler keeps playing every left back will look better in my eyes

Hmm. Struggling clubs have a nasty habit of firing their managers, regardless of the 'expectations' at the start. Stay down the bottom too long and he'll be gone, whether fans on here like it or not. This isn't like the Turner situation where a sense of history delayed it all. I reckon Mellon is alright, but that kind of view isn't necessarily going to save him if we continue to scrape along.

It was only recent history that delayed Turner's leaving IMO. A long awaited promotion from League 2 and a respectable 16th in difficult circumstances in League 1. So it was fair enough that he got as long as possible to try and build on that, regardless of his achievements as a young manager with us. And the same goes for Mellon, who deserves to be given funds in January to help us consolidate in League 1, if we are still struggling.

Sadly I remember getting stuffed by Coventry at Highfield Road and the goalkeeper was a young lad called Len Beel and it may have been his debut as Alan Boswell had been injured the week before against Walsall...I seem to remember the score was 8-1 but either way it was a tonking..incidentally no subs in those days and in the Walsall game Boswell came back on, on the wing with his arm in a sling .unbelieveable but true! He did not last long

I don't think Mellon's under any real pressure at the moment, and unless we find ourselves in the relegation spots for a prolonged period of time I'd rightly expect that to remain the case.
Having said that, if performances of yesterday's ilk start to become the norm that could change - we were ****ing awful. I think it's concerning that we're into October and Mellon still seems to have no idea what our best set-up is, particularly away from home. It seemed like we'd hit upon a relatively successful formula with the wins away at Barnsley and Southend, which seems to have been discarded for little real reason. But why on earth he felt setting up with such an open, attacking lineup away to one of the division's best frontlines is beyond me. We did actually start quite brightly and had a couple of openings which with a better final ball could have seen us snatch a goal, but it was still unbelievably naive to set up like that. Individually the back four all had stinkers, but in their defence they had no protection from in front of them, and we seemed clueless as to how to prevent Coventry pouring forward in numbers and creating chance after chance, which with better finishing and refereeing could have seen them 4 or 5 up at the break.
Lawrence seemed to be going for the world-record attempt for an individual giving the ball away in 90 minutes, Ogogo was ineffective once again and I'm not really sure his role in the team's clear, JLAA, Kaikai and Cole all gave it a go but never looked like getting the better of their individual battles, and while Collins works hard his tendency to continuously drop deep in search of the ball means he's completely unsuitable for the lone striker role. For good measure, and to complete the kicking of players 1 through to 11, Halstead deserves credit for some good one-on-one blocks in the first half, but should have done better with the first and the third (seriously, what the **** was that dive all about?)

This side is much better than either of Turner's, albeit yesterday didn't really support that argument one iota. I do think MM can keep us up.

For the first half an hour or so we didn't look that bad, we were just devoid of attacking ideas and quality in the final third, but that has been the case all season. When you add in how poor we are now looking at the back, its certainly worrying times and a season at the lower end of the table looks likely

I agree with most of that I simply dont know what we're doing at the moment or indeed since promotion. There doesn't seem to be any clear plan or consistency in formation or selection. Take for example in attacking midfield, we started with ogogo doing this role, now he's the holding midfielder while 2 or 3 attacking midfielders have been bought into the team.

Turner walked himself didn't he? He was't sacked and the chairman asked him to stay or? So I think Mellon should be OK from that perspective. If the chairman was happy to stick with Turner then I guess he will be happy to stick with Mellon.

He kept the score down singlehandedly with several good stops. Was arguably the only player that came away from yesterday's came with any credit. Agreed Leutwiler is a great keeper but I don't think you can point the finger of blame at Halstead for the shambolic performance at the Ricoh.

how about for starters going back to rochdale
there was no organisation of the defence and early on we looked like sunday leaguers
rochdale managed 4 shots on target and scored 3 of them
yesterday we looked dodgy at the back again but we were probably the better side until a shot from outside the box beat a keeper who went down in instalments
no wonder the penalty taker thought he'd pop it back down low into the same corner for number 2
and as for the third goal i'm not sure what he was flapping at but it certainly wasn't the ball
last 2 games 13 shots on target and concede 6
basically, he can't organise his defence and lets in every other shot
thats whats wrong with him
