I know we're justifiably despondant about Saturday, but I've been wondering what the result would have been if we had Fortune and Armstrong and they had Collins and JLAA.

I know we're justifiably despondant about Saturday, but I've been wondering what the result would have been if we had Fortune and Armstrong and they had Collins and JLAA. Mowbray has given Mark Venus specific responsibilty for player recruitment on a tight budget. Wycherley had the opportunity to appoint Venus as our manager but chose not to do so. Mellon's recruitment shortcomings are being painfully exposed (just as Peters, Simpson and Turner's were). He can tinker as much as he like with formations, but a basic lack of pace throughout the squad soon gets found out in League One. Vital to get some points on the board in October, because the November fixtures look a particularly challenging sequence of games. We have to keep faith with Mellon, because, whereas Turner left a blank canvas for recruitment, Mellon's squad legacy would be a wretched one.

A couple of disappointing things for me last Saturday. 1. Both Ellis & Clark were on the bench. Ellis has been fairly solid the last few games (although I wasn't at Rochdale). Clark also seemed to have built up an understanding with Cole & Kaikai but they were both too easily pushed off the ball by the Coventry defenders to have any real impact. 2. MM seemed content to let the game drift in the second half without any attempt to change things around by bringing players on apart from switching Collins/Barnett. It was fairly obvious that the odds of us scoring even one goal were fairly remote. He's not normally reluctant to make changes if needed. From Shropshire Star "Mellon made just the one substitution when Tyrone Barnett replaced father-to-be James Collins up front after 70 minutes.
And the Town chief admitted he didn’t think he could change the outcome from the bench.
“It’s always difficult when you’re two or three goals down to think you have the answer on the bench,” he added.""

I was sorry to see Clark and Ellis rested. So much of what has been good has been going through Clark and I thought he was becoming more and more influential. And Ellis could be faulted for a couple of recent goals, but so could every other defender... and some more so than him. But Ellis has also made some very timely blocks and tackles that have prevented some of those defenders' mistakes being further punished.
But MM said it was right... so it must be right.

I thought he signed the players or have I missed something and we now have a director of football making the signings? Must give the lads on the bench lots of confidence.

www.shropshirestar.com/sport/shrewsbury-town-fc/2015/10/05/micky-mellon-i-was-right-to-change-it-around/I may be wrong about this, but I don't think we've had a sub come on and score for us this season. I know goals aren't everything, but we really seem to be lacking impact subs. Subs need to come on, prove to the manager that they should have started the match and have a game changing impact. They won't make a difference to the game if: - the sub isn't used properly, ie change of tactics and/ or formation - the sub isn't good enough to make a difference - the sub doesn't have the drive and determination to come on and want to make a difference - the swap is made too late This season we've witnessed all of the above, and too often. The use of substitutes is just one of the areas where we are failing tactically at the moment. We haven't got the strongest squad, but if used better, we'd certainly be in a more comfortable place in the table; and with that comes confidence, which we're also lacking.

some great over reactions on here! two s**t teams, their number 9 ran the show and was the difference. we lost a game that we was predicted to lose, get over it and on to the next one Actually PWF, I don't think that there has been over reaction on this thread. I think most all of the posts, however critical, have been measured and calm. This is not a ra-ra cheerleader board, criticism as long as not extreme or vitriolic, should be as welcome as praise... whenever either are fairly deserved. The disquiet on the board is not because of one match that we were expected to lose, but because it followed shipping three goals in 15 minutes a few days earlier, and because we are in the relegation slot (but for goal difference), while the Coventry performance suggested that we are not improving things to help our situation, but getting worse. And many of the posters are puzzled by team selections, formations and lack of touchline tactics, that seem to be part of the problem... and the view from the top that it isn't one... and that they are right. Even before we kicked a ball, I was saddened that they broke up the best defense Salop have ever had. Goldson, we couldn't help, but like many, I felt that we replaced two young fullbacks, who may have had their faults but were young enough to grow, with two backs who are probably past the improving stage. Despite their supposed flaws, our defense, albeit in league 2, had a record number of clean sheets. This year the number of times the opposition s getting behind us and pulling the ball back is very worrying. I have just endured a cricket season watching Sussex being relegated with many of our supporters jointly bemused by a serious of team selections, which failed, as we knew they would, while a bloody minded Coach and Captain continued with their insistence that they were right. I really like MM, but he does give an air of being a little bloody-minded at times... which is good when things are going right... but perhaps needs reeling in a little when things aren't. Everybody on this board are singing the same song... perhaps sometimes with different words. We all love the Town and after the pleasure they gave us last year, we don't want to be relegated straight back this year. What we are seeing here isn't booing... it's voicing our worries. If and when we start climbing the table with some good wins, the praise will be heaped on in plenty. In fact right now it will be heaped on for any win. But yes we are worried... and for me... I can't stand the thought of my two teams relegated in the same effing year!

Maybe all the players were tired. They probably expended a lot of effort trying to get back in the game on Tuesday. Coventry, on the other hand, did not play midweek. What about the energy they saved by not starting for the first fifteen minutes. Surely professional players should be able to play two games in a week??

I agree. But if the opposition has not played midweek and you have, then there may well be a comparative difference in energy levels.

I' m sure yor right but surely this would become more apparent in the later stages of the game , not in the first 15- 20 minutes. Hence , as players begin to tire you think about using players off your bench to compensate if nothing else. Now , in the game away at Coventry ...........................,,, Think I'll leave it at that .

Even more surprising was that Grandison replaced Ellis who to date has been our best defender.
