Does feel a bit like someone's doing a GCSE in public relations at this is their coursework...

That article doesn't actually say we will improve training facilities, just that the manager and chairman have spoken that they would like to.
Presumably the investment in the new facilities will be an undisclosed figure. Best to keep the fans in the dark about this kind of thing

That will have the fans in buoyant mood again!
All very worthy but sounds like a desperate attempt to throw the fans a bit of good news and mattmw is right, it just says they're going to 'try and improve the training facilities'.
I hope we can all keep our feet on the ground after this exhilarating announcement!

Is that meant to make everybody happy again. I'm sure everyone would agree that they'd rather have kept our best players .. Or invested it in some new ones? I'm afraid what's happened , coupled with the club saying all along that they don't intend to sell our best players, leaves a sour taste for some . And improving training facilities doesn't get people through turnstiles. As far as I know we have a gym at the stadium , pitch right beside it to train on , a sports scientist employed . And just sold 4 youth team players who have all experienced stfc training facilities . I've never heard it slagged off before? What a load of crap.

Selling alsorts of players while struggling in the league and spending incoming cash of training facilities? (Which are hardly old anyway surely).
Very bemused and frustrated today, not good enough.

Reminds me of a save I had on FM last year. Got town in championship and then the bids came in for woods and Goldson and Roland said yes for me. I asked for an increase in the playing budget to make new signings and the board said no. Then a week later they upgrade the youth faculties. Hopefully real life follows my save fully..!

I seem to be alone in saying it on this thread but I think this is a good move. We could have thrown some cash around on a couple of players and got little or nothing on the "investment".
Investing in the future makes sense. It can't be a coincidence that Burton are doing so well and have attracted someone like Hasselbaink as manager now they have the use of the facilities at St George's Park.
Training facilities aren't much for fans to get excited about but they matter to players - and to promising young players and their parents.

No you are correct, it's just most people wanted to hear about new signings after losing two fans favourites in a week.

Wise move.
We're a club where players come to get better.
Better facilities = more ambitious players.

If it means that we can develop even more home grown players then the increased investment in these facilities will be pay for itself 100 times over. Unless some magical sugar daddy takes over the club then this is the only way we can sustain and grow our club.

Excuse my ignorance/naivety but I had been labouring under the impression our facilities are already pretty good for a club at our level.
Is that not the case?

Yes maybe an attempt at some PR but a good idea I think. Personally I would have liked to hear a bit more detail about the plans.

There was a quote from Ian Whitfield on the STFC facebook page which from memory suggested there was drainage problems which resulted in us having to use alternative sites

I understood that the team trained many times at Lilleshall last season as the Club's training ground was a midden when there was bad weather. Must be a drainage problem, as PS says above. So was use free of charge at the FA facility or did STFC have to pay, in which case is that not dead money and a reason why you should get right and use what you already have. Better facilities will help support development of all players, 1st team and development squad.

also the changing rooms at the training ground are like a second hand portable office, and is what we've had since the Gay Meadow days.
I remember them training at the astro-turf at Meole Brace school in the mid-90s, so never really had the best facilities unless they go to Lilleshall.
The club, need to continue to develop and compete with other clubs that they provide the best facilities for all age groups with the aim to get players in the first team and / or sell.
Be useful to see in detail the plans? How far will the club go?
An indoor centre 'dome' type of building?
pitches for all ages be of the same quality as the match day surface?
Better changing / gym facilities?

Surely the training ground pitch is better than the one behind the old station end, and that didn't hinder those players!

Who owns te Sundorne Castle training ground? Roland Wycherley I believe.
I do I hope the club keep us up to date with the training facility upgrade, I would hate to think that this was some kind of smoke screen to mask the lack of in coming players after Goldson & Woods left.

Who owns te Sundorne Castle training ground? Sir Roland. Hmmmmm that's wat I thought. Why would our club, STFC spend thousands on Rolands property? The great man does let us use it but if he retires in a couple of years will it just be an asset he sells with the club at potentially an increased value due to the improvements made and paid for by the club...... Or is he giving it to the club? Or perhaps it's owned by an off shore trust fund somewhere ? Or is it a way of getting back 'the gift' that he gave to te club to sign Akpa and Grando?

The players can't get on the Power League pitches for bloody kids for a start . It's worse during the school holidays , so much so that a number of Town players have signed up for Brian Williams's soccer school so that they can be guaranteed a run out . Sadler won the player of the week prize and Brown the penalty shoot out . Just goes to show those kids must be s**te .

Micky Mellon in todya's Shropshire Star. But the long-term plan is to house the football and medical staff from grassroots to first team under one roof, like many clubs up and down the country. “We need it yesterday, or imminently, because the bad weather will be kicking in shortly,” said Mellon. “The whole club from the kids to the first team needs it desperately if we’re going to move forward. “In a couple of weeks’ time we’ll have nowhere locally to train and we’ll have to go to Lilleshall, which isn’t ideal. “You have to take all your stuff down there and it’s like an expedition. “We’re speaking about making Sundorne habitable and improving the pitches because the drainage is poor. “We want that to become a place where we want to be because at the minute, it’s pretty much falling down and soon we won’t be able to get on the pitches because they’re so muddy and boggy and then we’ll only have the pitch at the side of the club. “It’s not enough for a club that wants to get better.” www.shropshirestar.com/sport/shrewsbury-town-fc/2015/09/12/upgrade-needed-for-training-base-says-micky-mellon/There is logic in what MM is saying. Notice the facilities behind the barnsley ground last week which had additional pitches and facilities for the academy and youth team.

Notice the facilities behind the barnsley ground last week which had additional pitches and facilities for the academy and youth team. That was a case of Barnsley investing wisely with the windfall of their brief flirtation with the Premiers**te. As for Salop upgrading there own training facilities sadly this ship has sailed. The opportunity was lost when Burgess went out of business next door to the training ground. The building could have housed an indoor training area, offices, gym, physio rooms, relaxation areas ect. Three full size pitches would go behind the building and by the side against the Rugby Club a goalkeeper rehabilitation area would fit. Despite mine and others best efforts apparently no money was available. Players look at what training facilities are when signing for clubs.l know we missed out on one player in the summer as the club he signed for, in League One, had better training facilities.
