Another striker deemed not good enough to play for Town, Hull City want him and Brentford's valuation is £7,000,000.

And he was well regarded as a youngster. Can someone remind me why we didn't offer him a professional contract?

And he was well regarded as a youngster. Can someone remind me why we didn't offer him a professional contract? Pretty sure we did for a year? He played a few games and then went on loan to Telford and that was it.

He was very raw and needed games at a lower level. We couldn't wait like bigger clubs for a couple of years for him to develop. How many loans out has that Bamford lad from Chelsea had and never got near their first team squad?
You either have to take a punt and pick him when he isn't ready or let go and hope it doesn't bite you in the ass, this one has well and truly bitten us but I am delighted for the lad. Sends a message to all young players who get released that there is hope and a way back if you work hard.

Wasn't Andre another one of Simpsons gaffs? Not considered good enough for a L2 club ?...just like Mark Pugh !

Wasn't Andre another one of Simpsons gaffs? Not considered good enough for a L2 club ?...just like Mark Pugh ! Very different situation to Pugh who had played plenty of league games and it was obvious to most of us he should be in the team gray was more like Ginnelly is now. He was fast but did not look a good finisher on the few occasions I saw him. I don't recall lots of people bemoaning his release at the time. Don't forget he did not go to a league club but moved to Nuneaton He has surprised us all and good luck to him but I don't think the club were at fault in this case

To be fair Gray never looked anywhere near a player for us.
I remember one game where he was playing, went on a big run down the line and utterly knackered himself, was blowing out of his backside and limped back to half way and had a load of water from the side of the pitch before he could even play again.
Certainly is various moved did him the world of good, maybe he was handled differently, and good luck to him.

Hindsight eh? I thought Gray showed enough potential to keep him on, what little I saw of him. Money's tight though and clubs like ours can't afford to offer too many contracts based on promise. We'd soon be moaning if the squad struggled for lack of experience.
Besides which players can improve beyond recognition as they mature, in new environments, under different coaches. I doubt that anybody saw Gray reaching the level he has (although £7m is ridiculous) - or Pugh for that matter.

Looking back on his time at Shrewsbury, Gray said "I was at the stage in my life where I thought everything was set for me. I didn’t really care about playing in Shrewsbury’s reserves, which it shouldn’t have been".[

Thanks for your replies below my post guys. I have a self confessed loathing of Simpson, and everything that he did, or in reality didn't do,during his time with us. Undoubtedly my comments are tainted by my hatred of the man. Only in the wonderful world of football would a man who had failed so spectacularly and so regularly be able to resurrect his career and find himself in a position of some authority at a PL club BTW Good Luck to Andre Gray, obviously he realised the error in his ways and has built himself a football career

I didn’t really care about playing in Shrewsbury’s reserves, which it shouldn’t have been".[ Defintley remember reading something similar, he admitted it was the usual story of he thought he was better than he was which is why he ended up leaving STFC. But unlike other players the release was the kick up the backside he needed and that is why he has been a success. I'm normally happy to slag off Simpson but on this occasion most people thought he would go the way of many youth players that get released He's clearly done well but £7million shows how ridiculously over-priced English players are

Yet for example someone like Chris Murphy I thought would do well, like Adaggio.
Hit and miss with young players, just look at the hype Glyn Thompson had?
As said above, can't blame Simpson on this one, who would of known?

Many a "top" business leader (not to mention bankers) has made a business worse, been hugely rewarded and moved on to further glories. A few politicians too. We all learn from our mistakes (or should do). I guess some are lucky enough to earn from them as well!

It was so obvious that he was worth a punt. He had energy and pace in abundance. Correct he couldn't finish but holy cow was he quick and powerful. I remember him playing in a friendly against Telford at home in one of the first seasons at the New Meadow and he stood out a mile for pure raw ability. I've always followed him to see where he ended up. But we let him go and thought players like Kris Bright were worth giving a go instead. Beggar's belief!!!! His application has obviously been first class since leaving. A lesson to any kid. Good luck to him.

I remember the day Andre Gray was offered a pro contract, 6 months he got. I too like a few on here was suprised. I asked Paul his reasons. He told me he could see something in him and was worth a punt. As even the lad himself has said he didnt take his chance but his since gone on, big style, good luck to him. Good luck to Paul Simpson too, very nice man, told it how it was and got on with it.

I think Gray is on record as suggesting that his attitude at the time was not good enough. He is an example to Ginelly.
Ah yes Southstand Shrew has the quote.

I think you can quite feasibly make a case for all of the managers from Quinn onwards, that regardless of the manners of their departure they left the club in a better state than they found it. For Simpson I'm not quite sure. To spunk the Holt money on a strike-force of Robinson, Elder and Bright really does defy belief in retrospect...

GT came in when we were in league 2 , and alright he got us promotion , but then , effectively left us in league 2 with no squad , and spent a fortune on loans . Mickys picked up the pieces . Ok technically GT left us a league higher but he left us in a right mess .

Ok technically GT left us a league higher but he left us in a right mess . Completely disagree with this. Graham Turner took over us just after we finished 12th in League Two. A year later we finished 4th (dubiously) and then 2nd which meant our first promotion in an age whilst playing some brilliant football. Alright, his last season wasn't the greatest but ,in my mind, he changed us from a mid table league two team who would flirt with the play offs to a top 3 league two/bottom half of league one team. Mellon hasn't achieved anything more than GT yet, League One will show whether he can take us a step further (I'm confident that he will).

He was the one glimmer of light (not really shining) in pre season amongst the, largely, cr@p stuff that Simpson brought in that close season. Gray ultimately carried the can for the disgraceful performance at Darlington when he certainly was no worse than the others when he came on. I don't think he played in the league for us again.
