I downloaded to a stick Windows 10 last night and went to install it but was asked for my O/S product key. Having never kept such an important key, I have no idea what it is. Is there any free to use software or can anyone offer me any tip as to how to find the key. My O/S is validated however.
Any bright sparks on here who can extol their IT knowledge and help an elderly chap (circa 1959) to overcome the technicalities of Microsoft please?

Just looked this up as I could well be in the same boat when I finally download 10
Download Magical Jelly Bean and follow the installation process to install it on your computer. Launch the program. ... The program will scan your installations and find the product keys of supported programs, including various versions of Windows and Microsoft Office.
Good Luck

Tried that but it doesnt give me what I need. The codes that it gives dont work. There is an option of paying $29.95 for a more comprehensive software package.

if its not taking the key it means for some reason Microsoft have it listed as not original. Best speak to whoever provided the PC.
Early advise is backup your data even if its an upgrade and beware of issues with software packages you may be running......

If it's Windows 8 or 8.1 then the upgrade should take care of itself and you don't need to enter the key.

Barry... Try eeeeeddddd's method first if problems persist
In Windows 8.1 it's
> right click start
then left click
> Control panel > System and Security > System gives the option: "see the name of this computer" > click on that, and at the foot of the page is the product code.
I think it's the same for Win 8 ... not sure for win 7, but it will be a similar route.
And if none of that works, make sure that nobody is outside when you throw the computer out the window.

So come on barrygarlow...
Have you found your product key or not? You've had 24 hours. The suspense is killing us. It's as bad as Ginelly: will he, won't he sign for Burnely.

Fancy keeping you guys in suspense all this time!!
I am sorry to say that after all these exciting tips for which I would like to thank everyone, I am no further down the road to sucess.
The product key is a sequence of numbers 00359-OEM-*******-***** and despite entering it it has not worked.
The automatic windows update is so slow, I thought that I would go onto a faster PC, download the O/S and then install it on all my hardware. So I have the D/L on a stick but cant get past the product key requirement.

And before I am accused of using dodgy software my O/S on two PC's and a laptop are all genuine and validated.

I've only recently learned how to use Windows 8.1, why should I change again?

Barry this isn't your product key, your product key is the string of numbers and letters on the sticker on the side of your PC/under your laptop. This key is your activation key which is listed when your product key is activated.
