Sad to hear of his death today, although 97 is a good age.
You didn't need to be a horse racing follower to know his voice. One of the last of the truly distinctive sports commentators, along with the likes of Arlott, Johnston, Benaud, Laker, Maskell, Coleman, Wolstenholme, Waring, Carpenter, McLaren - there aren't many left, perhaps only Peter Alliss?
It's less well known that O'Sullevan was a great champion of animal welfare. I think he was a long time ambassador and supporter of Compassion in World Farming, which probably didn't sit comfortably with some of the racing fraternity.

Although I am no fan of F1, I would probably add Murray a Walker to your list. RiP Peter O'Sullevan.

The soundtrack to my Saturday afternoons in front of the telly with my Grandad and Uncle Bill, Peter O'sullevan and Clive Graham racing correspondents of the Daily Express. I remember attending my first race meeting and been mortified that Sir Peter was not on hand to call them home.
