A question we've all had!... Followed by ' Yeah, but who's your Premier League side?!
Infuriating!!
So what's your answer? Why do you support the Town?
Strangley I got the bug more when I relocated away. Maybe I needed to reaffirm my Salopian identity

Normally it's some armchair fan of Utd, Liverpool etc. I explain to them I used to get angry with them, now I just pity them as they will never experience the feeling of we had v Everton, equalising v Chelsea, Exeter away, MK Dons away, Bury away, Dagenham home, Cheltenham away and a lot more.

Errr because I live in Shropshire and have no interest in the overpaid, prima Donna players in the premiership. I like a club where I actually know a lot of the fans, can encourage young players and can treat match days as real social occasions.

I was train spotting on Shrewsbury station platform in the early 1960's (the shame of it) and heard the noise coming from The Gay Meadow.I was fascinated.
Their next home game was against Swindon Town. I was there. The rest is history.

Turn it round and say "why do you support that lot when you've probably never lived in Manchester, Liverpool etc?"

Strangley I got the bug more when I relocated away. Maybe I needed to reaffirm my Salopian identity This is a question usually asked by a complete toss pot who hasn't a clue about football . Totally ignore them , that is after you have driven your size 9's into their scrotum . People like that will never understand the attachment fans have to their local team even though that team may be total s**te. They are the sort who would support the continuation of the clip art lion thing against the reinstatement of our Loggerheads. No soul, no passion , no f.ckin idea.

I always ask them to tell me about the last match that they attended as a supporter of their PL team....99% of the time you then get bluster and bulls**t...to which I tend to state "Oh you don't support them, you just like them because real supporters go to at least a couple of matches a season where ever they live"....seems to have the desired effect

It usually happens to me in the office environment by as others have put, armchair prem fans. Its brilliant because after a couple of minutes of chatting you realize that they are the ones that are missing something they are passionate, invested in and love in there life, not you. Supporting you local team, be they crap or not still has many many benefits over watching your team on TV 10 times a season, and i think deep down all armchair fans are utterly envious of it.

I get the 'who do you support in the Premier League' all the time over here in Germany. But that's from the Germans rather than anyone who is over this way from Blighty. Not sure whether its the done thing here or whether they're just looking to chat about football and need somewhere to start other than the English basement division. So I guess fair enough. You meet plenty of expats over this way who support Football League clubs. I think we've four Posh fans here in Stuttgart at the minute.

Cannot beat following Shrewsbury Town. A unique club in regards to our colours and history, not many other blue and amber scarfs out there.
Office friends and locals from where I live are interested in our club in particular among other lower league followers. As a kid, I guess you are drawn to the premier league because it's everywhere on the TV so you often get the two club fan - premier league and their home town.

I have an Arsenal one fo these at work, he talks so much rubbish I asked him if he would like a ticket for the Community Shield game against Chelsea, you should have heard the bluster and bulls**t as you put it. The true Arsenal fan at work couldn't bite my hand off quick enough to say yes.

Who do you follow? Me: Shrewsbury Town.
How come? Me: they were my local team where I grew up.

It all started for me when our swimming pool closed in the little town where I was living. The nearest town of civalisation on the train was Salop. We used to come into town swimming at the quarry, shop around for junk like kids do at 12/13 thinking we were the boys. Then one day missed the early train home, was bored saw some fans heading to the game. Said to my mates fancey going, we went lost 2-1 at home to Reading. Then decided we will go again next home game and it continued.

Strangley I got the bug more when I relocated away. Maybe I needed to reaffirm my Salopian identity Similar. Wasn't that interested as a youth, but then I Had wimmin, booze and cars to distract me. I spent much of the wilderness years (20-38) living well outside of Shropshire, and steadily my following of the Town got stronger. Roots I guess, but also I find lower league football far more engaging - both on and off the pitch.

For me as a young boy of 12, they were the first league side I had ever watched in the flesh.
I had just moved to Shrewsbury from Worcester because of my father's work, and had started at the Priory School.
Before I arrived, I had started watching Worcester City in the old Southern League, and by coincidence, the last game I saw was Worcester losing an FA cup match at home to Tow Law Town: the same northern outfit that Shrewsbury were paired with in the next round.
After drawing away, the replay was back at the Meadow under lights, and my new school-friends, all Town fanatics, persuaded me to go.
Maybe because I had bigged Worcester City up and said that there wasn't much difference between the Southern League and Divison 3, I went hoping for a Tow law victory to prove my point.
Instead standing with my friends right behind the goal at the Tech End, amongst, what was to me, the biggest, most noisy crowd I had ever seen... the night was mesmorising. It was wet, the grass and the white ball glistened under the lights (my first floodlit match)... and Shrewsbury were so powerful. Town won 6-2 and big Arthur Rowley scored at least one (perhaps even a hat-trick)... but the one I remember from the edge of the box... my God, I had never seen a ball hit so hard, bulging the net like a missile.
From then on I was hooked and never missed a match. I had new heroes: Rowley, Jimmy Mac, Mike Kenning, Dave Pountney, Frank Clarke, Harry Middleton, then Bobby Ross, George Boardman, Eric Brodie, Dave Roberts, Alan Groves, Alan Boswell, Alf Woods, Trevor Meredith... even the affable John (cornflakes) Gregson.
We always stayed a mid table divison 3 side while I lived in Shropshire... but what great cup days and nights we had too, with famous victories... and in the case of that 2-3 reversal at Stamford Bridge, famous defeats too.
There were bad times sometimes... an 1-8 stuffing by Coventry, following good wins at Crystal Palace and QPR... was hard to swallow, but mostly it was good.
Then I played locally in the minor league and enjoyed two cup final victories playing on the Meadow's sacred turf... and spent a couple of months trialing with the Town... mentored by George Andrews and Gerry Bridgewood... and trying to follow the example of the dedicated Jake King... and not the class clown, Terry Hughes.
Then I moved away, and saw less games.... but there was the Alan Durban era and the first Graham Turner era to stir the blood and draw me to the Meadow or away matches when I could... and always there were new heroes and no other side could take my affection.
Sometmes I would admire a side... Arsenal with Thierry Henry... Southampton with Le Tiz... but they were just casual affairs.
The love of my footballing life is Shrewsbury Town and I am as dedicated to them now as I have always been. And of course now, thanks to youtube, I never miss a goal.. or an interview... or an update... or a commentary, and see them whenever I can.
I have lived in Brighton now for 20 years, but have watched the Albion just a handful of times... and most of those were against Town. I do have Sussex CCC just 10 minutes walk away, and they are my other sporting love, but that's cricket, so I don't feel unfaithful... I will be there for tonight's top of the southern table T20 clash against Kent... but from August 8th my heart will be back in Salop.
Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows: What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain, The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.

I always thought supporting a Premier League team (despite living no where near them) is something you sort of grow out of.
There's this one lad I know, from Birmingham and supports Arsenal. Any family ties there? No. It's just bizarre. They go to just League Cup games and it's impossible to get tickets for a final. Football is not a TV programme but my generation has been brought up thinking it is. But when people say something similar to the thread title it really does get on my nerves but I often just laugh and turn it around on why they don't support their local team.
