Circumstantial evidence suggests that Gayle has been told the same thing.
But what about Vernon? Fifth choice striker last year and his wages are presumably a hindrance to us bringing someone else in.
Port Vale are looking for 2 strikers. He'd not have to move far!

If I was MM It would be my priority to move Vernon on...the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. At the end of last season he wasn't even being used as a striker and we aren't going to need him in Midfield with the depth we have there now are we. I bet he's on one of the highest wages too???

Whilst the money was appreciated and used wisely in most cases, let's face it, with Robbo, Vincent and Caton going/gone, Jon Taylor has not been replaced adequately so far. Great contingency last season to develop an effective wingless formation but he knows in L1 we must have good options on the flanks. Let's hope the latest recruits are more successful

I think you've hit the nail squarely on the head there onthepitch. I'd imagine that MW and MM have been frantically negotiating with Vernon to try to persuade him to move on, whilst his agent is presumably advising him to demand a large settlement payment in order for his contract to be cancelled as he's on a high wage. And maybe, just maybe, the reason we are stalling on making such a payment is that as yet we haven't received a penny for either Woods or Goldson. If we are to have any chance of signing Mangan, then it's reasonable to assume that Vernon MUST be removed from the wages bill.

Caton looked absolutely brilliant last pre-season, but has clearly delivered absolutely sod all since. An excellent example of how you can't read too much into friendlies!

He did, I was expecting him to be a real star for us after watching him in those games... Lightening fast and could get past players as if tgey werent there (in Friendlies!). He is still only 21/22 though isn't he? Could go on to have a decent career yet??

MM has been reported as saying that, because of the available personnel, he did not have a lot of options from playing the now "famous " 532 system, with wing backs pushing on. I would be sorry to see Caton move out, from what I saw he has great potential . He is still a young man learning his trade, as was Pugh when he came to us, and as were Bradshaw and Taylor! Having wide men with pace gives Mellon an alternative system to play. As far as Vernon is concerned, I don' t know if he is on a lot of money but , apart from that, I would keep him because I believe he has a lot to give, especially in this division. Described by an ex- pro as the best "finisher" at the club, I think that he has the ability to provide more assists than any of the others up front.

With JLAA and possibly Mangan out of the equation, I would expect us to keep Vernon and I believe that League One would suit his game more than the basement division. Even if we (hopefully) re-sign Mangs, that would still only leave us with four strikers, which must be the minimum requirement for the season. Hopefully a returning Mangan would remain fit for the season, unlike Billy Bunkem's ballet dancing mate at Walsall.

To my mind our strike force doesn't look that strong on paper , so id keep vernon .

Bizzarly until vernon moves on vernon will feature. So until he moves on.....there's only one Scott Vernon!
Saw him at Oxford away and played well linking the midfield with Collins and was an assist in Collins goal. Pity that Collins didn't return the favour moments later when and if Vernon had of scored could of been the extra boost he needed.

Bit of a drop from being a full time pro with a League 1 Club to part time in the Conference North. Can't see it myself. Though I suppose it's just about possible if we have paid him a very generous settlement or are paying some of his wages for the next year.

Not sure as in the Shropshire star it's saying
“He’s an attack-minded player who can play right wing or full back. He’s played in the Football League too and he will be a great addition.”
Caton at right back?

Can't see it being him. It said his club had just had TWO successful seasons.
