In other news. RIP Clive Rice. One of the best players of all time, just a shame he was around in the era he was. That's sad news. I remember him as a great all rounder who formed a formidable bowling partnership with Richard Hadlee during their time at Notts. Just a great shame that he and the likes of Mike Procter and Barry Richards never got the chance to play international cricket. RIP Richards did play in 4 tests (2 hundreds 2 fifties) and Procter in 7.

I do recall watching the likes of Procter and Richards on the BBC later in the 70s and thinking wow, they are world class players. I can still remember Mike Procter's hat trick against Hants in the B&H back in 1977 when cricket was still free to view on tv.

I was fortunate enough to be taking my degree in Bristol from 1971-1974 so was able to see plenty of Procter, Zaheer, Sadiq and indeed David Shepherd (who was carrying as much weight then as he did in his umpiring days).
Procter scored 21,936 first class runs @ 36.01 with 48 hundreds and 1,417 first class wickets @ 19.53!
Well up there with Botham, Imran, Kapil Dev, Hadlee..and indeed Rice.

Rice's figures. 26,331 first class runs @ 40.95 with 48 hundreds. 930 first class wickets @ 22.49.

I was privileged to see a majestic century by Barry Richards at the old county ground in Southampton against the New Zealand tourists in 1969.

Great first hour. Attacking cricket from England. Finn playing well. Rain delay now ironically probably helping Australia out.

Wow. 82-5. Are you England in disguise?! What a toss to lose.
If England win here it'll be the longest run of tests in which a side alternated between winning and losing (7). Inconsistent.

Great start, but the first overs of England's innings suggests they'll have to battle hard to post a much bigger score than the Aussies. Would be great to see a decent opening stand from England for once - or at least doing better than the habitual 3 down for 30-40.

Second innings, assuming he gets one, must be Lyth's last chance. Is that 9 innings now? Shown little sign that he's of Test standard.

First of all make sure we push home advantage by producing a track to suit our bowlers, mainly Anderson and Broad. There you go, just the eight wickets

Had everything. Australia out for 136. Jimmy jimmy Anderson got 6 wickets. Bell got half century. 100 up for England. Oh and Mitchell johnson slipped over and mis fielded twice!

I do feel for Lyth. He's batted brilliantly in county cricket for a while and several of his dismissals have been great deliveries, plus he should have been given a chance in the Windies but sat on the bench instead of getting games either for England or Yorkshire. However, his dismissal today was pretty poor and he just doesn't look cut out for test cricket - some people are, others aren't. He was a late bloomer on the county stage so I'm loathe to write him off already.
The biggest issue is the lack of alternatives. Compton is often suggested and arguably the most convincing, but he's averaging below 40 this season and has quite often batted at 3. Northwestman suggested Daryl Mitchell - not someone I know massive amounts about (other than him having a lower FC average than Lyth) and he doesn't seem to be someone the selectors will look at - another one in the Brooks or Rushworth category. Carberry isn't an option. Alex Lees has been off the boil this season. Tom Abell is a talented young player but nowhere near ready and yet to score a century. Ansari is another young player who's not ready. Hales' form has dropped and he's a #3 in red ball cricket (although still probably next in the queue for England's selectors).
Craig Overton blasted 49 off 25 balls today for a new List A high score. Seems like someone whose England breakthrough won't be far away. Ballance also made a second consecutive score (77 after 69 the other day). Michael Stoneman made a ton and is someone who I have heard mentioned as an in-form opener who's far better than his average would suggest, and in whom England have some interest.
Anyway. Great day. Great to see Finn back in and taking wickets - shame for Wood but he looks like he won't be back in the side this summer - and hopefully he can really push back on to be the bowler we've been hoping he would since he broke through. Jimmy was back at his majestic best, Cook looked impressive before his bizarre dismissal and Bell was utterly glorious before a stupid dismissal.

There you go, just the eight wickets Australia had the chance to bowl first. A repeat of 1997, you think they would learn and Ian Bell finally came good, sort of ;-)

Not much Bairstow and Stokes could have done about their dismissals. Root, however...

Root gone playing a terrible shot. Lyth rightly got criticised by Root was set and that was a far worse shot. We really cannot afford to only have a 50/60 lead. Imo that's all square with us batting last. Come on Mo!'
