I haven't enjoyed a test match that much for a long time, brilliant 5 days of cricket, really looking forward to the second test, a 2-0 win would set us up beautifully for the Ashes.
Bayliss is an interesting one, don't know much about him but I hadn't heard of MM before last summer so I'll reserve judgement.

Really great game, thoroughly good feeling as an England fan. Really good showing from the thoroughly likable Kiwis, too - McCullum spoke well afterwards.

What a fantastic result! Sadly due to the time difference I couldn't listen to the conclusion, but sounds like it was a wonderful end to a brilliant test match.

Some thoughts on the events of the past 5 days:- - Great advert for five day test cricket - still the best test there is. People will remember this match long after they have forgotten who won any ODI game or series.
- Colin Graves must be feeling a bit silly at the moment after his comments about reducing Test matches to four days to improve the 'entertainment'. Under his plan games would be 30 overs shorter and so we would have just seen a drawn game and the ECB would have lost about £250k in revenue!
- This match highlights the dreadful missed opportunities in taking Lyth and Wood on tour to the Caribbean and not playing them.
- Paul Farbrace's stock must be pretty high - his decision to bat Stokes at six puts Moores' dreadfully conservative tactics in perspective.
- People who doubted Cook's form or ability should learn to differentiate between T20, ODI and Test cricket. His form in Tests may not have brilliant over the past 18 months but has never been so poor to warrant being dropped (unlike his ODI stats).
- Ian Bell looks more and more past his best. At 33 he is unlikely to get much better. Time for Taylor or Hales to be given a run.
- New Zealand have a brilliant approach to cricket and Brendon McCullum deserves great praise for the way he leads the side in all forms of the game.

It's just a shame therefore that we only have the 2 test matches against New Zealand. I'm really looking forward to my trip to Headingley next weekend, hope that it's more of the same.

Agree about Cook, a lot of people have short memories regarding him. Also it wasn't that long ago Bell almost single handedly batted us to a 3-0 ashes win!
Whilst Farbrace did an excellent job (he would be my choice as coach actually), the decision to bat Stokes at 6 wasn't really made by him. It was made because Ali and Buttler were in the nets when we lost early wickets!

Ian Bell is averaging 26.4 runs at test level in this calendar year.
Mind you he did score 143 out in the West Indies.
I think that England should stick with him for the time being, he brings experience to the middle order.

Apparently that wasn't the case - only BBC seemed to be reporting that after initially suggesting it would be the same order as in WI. Ali at 8 worked, as well.

Yes, but my point is that since then in 16 Test matches he averages 31.63 with 12 single figure scores out of 27 innings. This is simply not good enough! This has been denied by Stokes, Farbrace, everyone involved with the team and most serious media commentators ( e.g. Agnew). Stokes was actually listed on the team sheet at 6 before the toss was made (another t**tter inspired rumour which people bought in to without actually looking at the evidence)!

Yea, I have been quite harsh on Bell of late and he didn't have a great match at all at Lords, particularly in the field although got an absolute rozzer in the first innings to be fair but i think its too early to talk of dropping him, he is a class batsman and will come good again.
Im still not 100% sure about Moeen tho, great couple of knocks with the bat but his bowling is struggling, I don't think for one minute England will change a winning team and it would be harsh to drop him but I really would like to see Rashid get a game so as a leggie, our bowling has a bit more variety. Root would still give us the off spin option too then.

Rashid needed to play in the windies. He's a very capable player, he's proven it in ODI cricket before he was harshly dropped. Our attack will be 4 seamers and Ali I think. Ali just needs overs, he's barely bowled since last summer when he was taking wickets for fun.

Bayliss just named coach, interesting to say the least.

Bayliss just named coach, interesting to say the least. He's due to join the ECB next month, in time to take charge of the team for the start of the Ashes Test series in July. Good to see that Paul Farbrace will continue as Assistant Coach. He was instrumental in yesterday's win.

Ali bowled alright, I thought. He wasn't economical but he won't be - he isn't a frontline spinner for his county. Batsmen will go after him and that's why he takes wickets - even since he's come back in the side, I think his bowling average is in the mid-30s. Rashid may well be better for all I know, but Ali hasn't done enough to warrant being dropped at this stage.

England win the toss and will bowl. Unless he has a stinker or it rains again, then I don't think I'll be there to see Jimmy's 400th test wicket. Hopefully I'll get to see Cook become our leading run scorer!
Unchanged for us, Ronchi for Anderson. It'll be interesting if Craig has a poor game again as NZ heavily rely on Boult and Southee as it is.

What a great day of cricket, despite the number of breaks due to the rain.
New Zealand are in one day mode, really impressed with the debutant Ronchi, he's on course to score a 100 before close the way he's going.

Yes, if Ronchi doesn't make a hundred, I'll eat my hat, which is made of fish and chips.

I was really surprised it was Ronchi's Test debut. He seems to have been around the ODI & T20 stuff for an age!

You can pretty much cancel out the others that were lost the rain now. Great days cricket, NZ are so reckless yet so brilliant to watch. We were really poor for an hour but excellent at times too. Honours probably just about even I'd say.

Honours probably just about even I'd say. New Zealand are going to make a lot of friends playing this style of attacking cricket. Good for them, it can only be good for getting people back watching test cricket. More's the pity that it's only a 2 test match series. I've really enjoyed my day in Leeds today. Hoping for the same excitement tomorrow and no rain forecast!
