He needs to do better research before he starts giving his opinions.

Completely clueless about the make up of the team.

Is this about what he said on the Football League Show?
I think he has it right that we certainly put the team together specifically to get out of the division (the chairman made that abundantly clear not too long back) but I was a little confused with the 'good old pros who know this division' comment (or words to that affect), not really thought that about our team. Our average age isn't too high is it? And as to whether they'll be able to cut it a division higher (as he questioned), I guess we'll find out soon enough...

Probably still hurting after we beat his beloved Portsmouth/Luton/Cambridge/Leicester this season....a very average journeyman striker who's had more clubs that Tiger Woods.
Irrelevant spiel by a footballing & broadcasting non-entity

Although we now undoubtedly need to strengthen in certain positions, his comments about us having 'good old pros who know the division' was seriously wide of the mark.

Lut never played L2 Gayle - played a handful of games and is very young Goldson - played more games outside of l1 before this year Grando - fair Ellis - fair Demi - never played l2 NKP - played a lot of conference football, barely played l2 Grimmer - loanee with little/no exp of l2 Passley - same as above Wildig - not played Lawrence - experienced but hardly a league 2 veteran, been years since he played this level Weso - fair Woods - youngster who hadn't played this level Southern - barely played anyway Griffith - barely played McAllister - had him before season started and hardly experienced Vincent - who? Barely played Grant - fair Collins - fair JLAA - fair Vernon - fair Mangan - non league punt Barnett - signed in January, fair enough Probably forgotten some obvious ones.

Certainly not the best analysis considering the average age of our defence which has been the bedrock of our promotion. To defend him a little bit I think , rather than say our current squad couldn't cut it in league 1 he said our squad wouldn't go through the higher division which Suggests he was talking about our chances of L1 promotion rather than survival

We should surely be looking at the futures of our chairman and manager. What on earth were thinking about - putting together a team to get us promoted!!!?
Is Steve Claridge a complete numpty? I know I'm not the most knowledgeable football person, but isn't that what every manager tries to do at the beginning of a season? He really does take the biscuit! Mind younI may be biaised as I remember him diving right in front of us at Birmingham some time in the nineties - can't stand him!!!
Yes and just think what may have been achieved if we hadn't lost two of our most influential players to season ending injuries. Our team have done us proud - pity some in the footballing world can't enjoy it with us.
By the way, talking of our two injuries, does anyone know how they fared in the cycle ride yesterday?

I used to rate Claridge's opinions quite highly but lately he seems resigned to quick generic soundbites that you could relate to most sides, but I thought he got it bang wrong yesterday.
Any side that gets promoted having scored the most goals and conceded the least hasn't just limped over the line and is confound to doom and gloom the following season. Anyone who has seen this side play this year, which he obviously hasn't, knows it is a special one.
The fact it's a side thrown together in a matter of weeks after a top to bottom reshuffle at the football club; new chief exec, new coaching staff, a whole host of new players, makes it even more the achievement in my opinion.
Even if you accept that Woods and Goldson may not be with us much longer, I'd be very surprised if the likes of Leutwiler, NKP, Lawrence, Wesolowski, Collins, Barnett etc are found out of their depth in League One. The difference this time round is that I'm sure these players will be chomping at the bit to get going this season. I don't fear losing the spine of our promotion side this time round.
The future's bright.

One player that might improve our squad and who I assume might now be available is Max Power of Tranmere.
Double figures in goals as a midfield player in a relegated side, only 21, and contract runs out in June 2015.

I would imagine Max Power ( what a wonderful name ) is and has been for some time on MM's list together with a few others. Dont think we will be caught out for next season . We will have to wait and see but I seriously think we can expect some exciting changes to our squad . MM doesn't look like the kind of fella who is content to sit back with a smug look on his face and miss out. He knows what we need not just to survive but to really compete next season. I'm getting excited already?

Many of you on here are aware of my enthusiasm for Mark Duffy. He seems to be more or less out of favour at Birmingham having only played 7 games and 3 more on loan to Chesterfield.
He's got 1 more year to run on his Birmingham contract but I wonder if they'd be prepared to release him. Mind you, I'd imagine that wages might be a problem here, though he is now 30.

Yeah, strange comments from Claridge. The interpretation people seem to be putting on it is that he was saying we'd put together a squad of gnarled lower league pros good enough to get out of L2 and nothing more. I don't think that's fair to him though. As Paul says, he questioned whether this squad could be built on to go through the leagues. Few clubs promoted from L2 ever come close to that anyway.
I'm not sure anyone thinks our squad is strong enough to get up from L1 but we all know it will change every summer. In terms of its blend of youth, experience and overall quality, I'd say there's certainly enough there to give us a platform on which to build a competitive L1 squad - and I'd say that's as much or more than any of our fellow promotees will have.
Claridge isn't a fool and his summary of us and many other lower league clubs as always being likely to have a strong season every 5 years or so was a shrewd one. In this instance, he's simply got it wrong about the make-up of our squad, which makes me question how much of us he's actually seen.

The bookmakers seem to be looking quite favourably on our ability to be challenging at the top end of League 1.

The punditry on The Football League Show is absolute pump. Basic statistics are all they have to go on, as no-one really cares or knows about what is really going on.
They should just show the goals and be done with it.

Their analysis is just waffle with a hint of twaddle.
It's like ITV at the world cup!

Just watched the show back after a weekend away. Sounded almost like Claridge wasn't expecting that question and had to bluff an answer at the last minute
