If England was occupied by a foreign power, was suppressed in some meaningful way or had a bigger, overbearing neighbour then I'd get the flag out, have cucumber sandwiches and a pot of tea and celebrate the heck out of my Englishness. But we aren't, so I won't. But a quiet happy St George's Day to my English brethren. [Sorry, I was forgetting, we're Welsh and we know we are ..... ]

He is also the Patron Saint of many other countries, regions and cities across the world. Born in the Roman Empire (Syrian-Palestine) never visited these islands.
Either way it means things to some so Happy St George's Day.

Venceremos has forgotten the EU, not occupied but governed by them. yes most of us were welsh one time when Wales captured Shrewsbury and named it Amwythig meaning the delight. st George means nothing to me unless he was playing for town.

Very bothered about it. Our Patrol Saint's day should be an English Holiday to commemorate a national holiday. Pride in one's traditions are important to me and mine.
Now live in the Principality (Wales) and feel that the Welsh should feel exactly the same on 1 March.

In the words of David Starkey, celebrating our national holiday would make us a small, insignificant country like the Scots and the Irish who really go to town with the jingoistic over-celebration of their nationalism.
Still, that's not to say I won't acknowledge it with a bottle of cider (probably foreign) and listening to Frank Turner.
Happy St Georges Day everyone. And a belated Happy birthday to Our Majesty the Queen.

as for wales capturing amwythig, llywarch hen came down from Cumberland and joined forces with Cynnddylan from Powisland whose home was Pengwern, the ancient name for Shrozebury. all this happened in circa 584. successive English kings including Edward drove the welsh back and built many castles. From the History of Shrewsbury 1905 by Thomas Auden, vicar of Condover. er Nostag! and Floreat Salopia!

This thread has gone a bit 'brass eye'. Happy st George's day, the anniversary (sort of) or our promotion as champions from division 3 in 1993/1994 against Northampton I think
