Another bunch of really good films been added today; Zulu, Goonies, Long Good Friday to name a few. I'll throw another few into the ring. Gallipoli or Tim. Before Mad Max made Mel Gibson a household name. Midnight Express. Definately one to keep you on the straight and narrow when you venture abroard. Silent Running. One of the saddest films ever (after Bambi of course ). As Good As It Gets. Just appeals to the cynic in me. The Man In The White Suit. Could have picked any one of a dozen Ealing Comedies, but I've seen this one most, so have to choose it. Could also have picked pretty much any Norman Wisdom film too. No violence (apart from inferred), bad language, sex scenes or special effects. Think we need to start a thread on favourite books. The movies and music ones come up every couple of years and I'm almost certain that some people on here can actually read and might have moved on from the Mail, the Sun and the Dandy.

My favourite Ealing comedy would have to be The Ladykillers....

Films.... perhaps the greatest Art Form ever.... as it combines writing, visual art, acting, music and the magic of light all in one.
Very tough... there are hundreds more that could be in my list. I have included two double features at the top because you have to see them both to make them perfect.
Godfather part 1/ Godfather part 2 Jeanne de Floret/ Manon de Source The Shawshank Redemption The Pianist Some Like it Hot American Beauty Once upon a time in America* Diabolique Das Boot Amadeus
Big mentions to for:
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Goodfellas Schindler's List The Green Mile The Big Lebowski The Assasination of Jesse James Fargo No Country for Old Men Leon Vertigo
and recently enjoyed:
The Theory of Everything The Imitation Game The Kite Runner The Book Thief...
and watched again: the enigmatic original Russian version of Solaris.
Note that I preferred Sergio Leone's Once upon a time in AMERICA, with De Niro and James Wood, set around the Jewish gangster community in Brooklyn to his western version... both of course have the soaring soundtrack of Ennio Morricone to beautify them.
Which reminds me.. how could I miss out "The Mission"!!!

Shawshank Redemption is a fantastic story of human endurance and a very watchable film.
I love a good western and I haven't seen better than An Outlaw Josey Wales, Clint at his absolute best.
For comedy, if you get the chance to watch any of the old Will Hay films treat yourself, such good scripts and performances from comedy geniuses, particularly Oh Mr Porter, brilliant film.

I remember crying my eyes out to that when I was a nipper. Very sad, poignant film.
