Never saw anything special in him although he's probably a very nice fella. Where exactly he made the legendary performances indicated on here are a mystery to me?

In what was one of the worst seasons in our history AW was definitely one of the very few highlights last season.
Any slim chance we had of staying up disappeared when he got carried off in a game at the meadow mud season (can't remember who it was against) as he was playing superbly in the middle of a very poor team.
This season he is in competition with the strongest midfield we have had for some time and the performance of those in the team has generally justified his exclusion.
He has more talent than Southern or Griffith but us not a holding midfielder so that is largely irrelevant.
He is only out on loan and at a level higher than last time with kiddy, which may get his form, fitness and confidence back up. I haven't given up hope he may still have a role next season (particularly if we lose woodsy in the summer).
Overall MM has had an incredible first season with us, especially when you consider what he inherited.
However no manager gets every decision right and also situations change and new opportunities emerge.

As stated by others MM's treatment of AW is pretty much the only black mark on an otherwise excellent 1st season. Wildig hasn't been given a chance but Grant has been backed 110% even when he falters and needs a break.

I have said many times that football is all about opinions. Paul and I differ on midfielders in particular but that doesn't make either of us right ( or wrong ). I personally like AW as a player who can spot and play a defence splitting pass and who will always put a shift in. Paul has never seen these qualities in Aaron - fair enough I know how highly he rates Ryan Woods, a player with huge potential, but one who has been below par probably since Chelsea. In recent games he spends more time going backwards than the crews in the University Boat Race. I appreciate that form is temporary whereas class is permanent so I fully expect him to get back to his best soon. That said, I feel RW could have been rested for a couple of games when they have been coming thick and fast and AW given the chance that every squad member deserves. Rather than not seeing any qualities in AW I would rather be quoted as not rating him highly like you and many others on here. IMO he keeps possession well and has a good range of passing. I think his creative threat, borne out by his stats, is much exaggerated. Whilst my opinion may be in the minority, you're right, that doesn't make it wrong. But from events this season it seems MM may be part of that minority which at least gives our alternative views a bit more credibility. As for Ryan Woods regardless of current form, I think he will go on to play at a higher level than Aaron Wildig in the future either with us or someone else. Time will tell.

Some good points made about Aaron Wildig and his role in last season's annus horriblus, but let's not forget he was a good player, not outstanding, in a poor to average team. We tend to lose our grip on reality sometimes on the game and don the rose tinted specs. The manager and his staff are working with the players day in and day out, and will have their reasons why players are not right for the team, be it form, confidence, ability etc. I cannot think for one moment that we would be leaving a player out because of some of the "reasons" stated on the message board, as this would suggest the manager is prepared to jeopardise results because someone is unpopular. If anyone has, or is in, a management role, you quickly realise that it's not about you its about performance and results, and you manage the team accordingly regardless of popularity. We have no idea how to manage a professional football club and a lot of talk about who should play what and where, dips in form etc, are all based on a 90 minute snapshot every week or 2. If you are running a business or managing it would you ask for advice from someone who has not done similar or who popped in for a hour and half every fortnight? I understand we all have opinions but we need to keep to the facts and look at the bigger picture in this case.

A couple of points Paul. Woods may well play in the Championship - hopefully soon. Wildig has already done that. The manager has recently told AW that he is pleased with him and other members of the coaching staff have encouraged him and intimated that they would like to see him in the team. As for our current midfield, our captain demonstrated on Tuesday, how it should be done - make yourself available to receive the ball, then recycle it quickly in a forward direction to the feet of a team mate.

With respect, that's not the strongest argument to indicate what will happen to Wildig in the future. MM may indeed be pleased with him but that's not the same as MM thinking Wildig's currently good enough to get in our first team, now or in the future. Wildig hasn't made one single start this season has he? Surely that speaks louder than any soundbite from MM or his coaches.

It is still worth pointing out that Wildig only played last season in his prefered position of centre mid. His stats compare with those of Grant in roughly the same number of games BUT at a higher level.

I think the support and sympathy shown towards Wildig is because of a feeling of guilt that he appears to have been treated unfairly having been our best player last season.
Managers are judged solely on results and will pick the team they think will win, football is a hard profession and there is no room for sentiment.

Little surprised to see him allowed to go out on loan as our central midfield is still a little light in numbers.
Got to be a slight doubt on Lawrence playing every game for 90 minutes until the end of the season, and I've been a bit surprised Woods hasn't been rested as despite his good season he's still young and playing 40 plus games in central midfield is a big ask. As others have said Grants form is a bit hit and miss and Southern appeals short of fitness and form

I think Wildig's a good player who might have been given more of a chance this season. That's all.
It's irritating that some insist on polarising the discussion by insisting that his "greatness" in my eyes is because he hasn't played. Or even worse, to ask where these "legendary performances" of his might have been. I can't think of many performances at that level by any Salop players while I've been watching so let's not get daft about it.
Mellon's decision to make and it ends Wildig's time with us. We may or may not regret that, now or in the future. But it seems odd to weaken the squad at such a crucial time, in a position we regarded as a weakness until Lawrence returned. One good result and we seem to be overlooking the 4 points from 5 games that preceded it. Seems to me we've left ourselves one injury or suspension away from being short in midfield again.

It was a perfecty sensible idea, as he'd often been poor last season and we needed to clear the decks. The fact that he's done well for Wycombe doesn't alter that and we've been fine with Demetriou in his place.

Just a thought. Wildig's loan is ab initial one month Los. For all we know there is a recall clause if we have an injury and MM may be trying to get him match fit in case he is needed right at the end.

Why get rid of a player that is head and shoulders in skill over Southern , etc. Get a grip Mellon and man manage a bit better . Sir Matt Busby coped with George Best why can't you with Wildig ?!? It's a big mistake that might bite us on the promotion backside

I do not think anyone, when mentioning Wildig in their posts, have elevated him to a position of club legend. My own views are that he was a good young player initially played out of position but who played as well as he could to help the team out. Eventually we had the opportunity to play him in his favoured central midfield role, and realised that we had ourselves a good young player. If we are going to be criticised for our stance on Wildig as a talent, then let's not bother holding an opinion on any player. I would like to see us keep our younger players and build a team around them. Let's be mindful of the fact that Lawrence is nearing the end of his career, and has no sell on value.

Matron -
Not a fair question - mainly because my memory ain't that good and I'd need a list of results and a lot of thinking time(and I'd struggle to answer the same question if we were discussing Woods, Collins, Goldson or anyone who was with us before this season)!
But also because nobody was able to change many games in our favour last season but we haven't ditched Woods or Goldson (with good reason), who also didn't meet that criterion.

If you dig a little deeper you will maybe discover the truth. Bradshaw, Taylor, McAlister, Jacobson all departed and Wildig farmed out. I was told that McAlister was being paid more than any of the new signings including our captain. I am sure that some of the others were on more than Macca so they needed to be moved on to free up wages. Another possibility why players move on is the Darren Jones situation - a certain amount of games automatically trigger a clause entitling you to a further year. I believe that this happened with JJ the previous season.
