After today's debacle in which we played like Duncan Ferguson was playing for us, I am concerned about the signing of Barnett.
I saw him last week against Wimbledon and today......not really impressed.
We consistently for 90 minutes played long balls onto him which yielded bugger all today. Today felt like we had completely changed our normal game to accommodate him
Anyone else concerned?

I thought he was the most threatening of our strikers tbh and worked his socks off - no doubt he missed a great chance on the volley from Grandison's cross though.

I don't think he's 100% fit. Although today nobody played to their usual standard his non challenge led to them breaking away for the first goal.

I am happy with Barnett in the team overall, but I do agree the long ball tactic in the second half to Barnett was a tactical mistake in hindsight by Mellon, as Tranmere dealt with it comfortably I thought.
I think Micky Mellon is the one accountable on this occasion!

Shocking ball from Woods though with the ball to Barnett behind him making it easy for the Tranmere player to win the ball! Woods more at fault I thought!

Think Barnett will get much better as he gets his fitness, and you can bet the clubs back room staff are working very hard on that, and imagine by end of March he will look sharper
Seems a great target man who can link up play, and isn't at all bad with the ball to feet. However would agree with others it maybe makes us look for the long ball when I don't think that's our best style of play

A match fit Barnett will do okay for us.
I think the long ball tactic today was okay, I think it was more about the injury to Lawrence and the fact that some players were off their game today. Grant has struggled for the last few games and in my opinion Vernon in the role off the strikers just doesn't work.
We need a left sided central defender or left back, the whole shape of the team has been affected with KNP getting injured.

Instead of slotting into the team, we seem to have completely changed our approach. The predictability of the pass across the back then the diagonal long ball to him was bizarre, particularly as it wasn't working for us!

Barnett was not the problem.
Our issue was loosing our captain, conceding two in quick concession, and the subsequent panic substitutions...
When we played wide, crossed and passed, we pulled Tranmere to pieces.

Bobby grant needs to sit a few out too... Not getting on his back, but he's been way off form for some time.

Lacks a fitness edge but offered more than many today.

I am also concerned about Barnett, he was directly responsible for Tranmere's first goal by losing the ball cheaply on the half way line and then rather than chase to win it back, decided to stroll! Long ball to Barnett was plan A today, with no plan B. Barnett and Collins are too similar to play together, our forward line is desperate for pace.

Bobby grant needs to sit a few out too... Not getting on his back, but he's been way off form for some time. He was poor but no worse than Woods, the Ginger Wilkins. Every time he got the ball he looked to play it backwards, putting us under unnecessary pressure and costing us a goal. I would like to see Southern as the defensive midfielder and hope that by moving Woods forward, he would try to make passes to open up the opposition defence rather than putting pressure on our own.

To be fair, it was Woods misplaced pass rather than Barnet that lost it, but standing still watching the guy run away from you ain't going to get it back, thought he did ok other than that. My issue was with the tactics rather than the player.

The worrying thing is we seem to have changed our playing style because for some reason we think he's unstoppable in the air, which he isn't. It was quite easy to forget Collins was even playing in the second half, not his fault, but absulotely everything was aimed at Barnett, we've spent 100k on a striker only to start playing long balls? Why change our playing style when the one we've been using all season took us to top spot.
That along with the injuries to quality players has for the first time out doubt in my mind over top 3. That's 3 poor performances from 4 games now.

Think the first goal was a poor attempt at a save from Lutweiler, who had to have an injury straight afterwards, being beaten at his near post was comical. But 1 bad game in 40 is forgivable, the loss was a setback, wont stop us lifting the title, but lets move away from hoofball please.

We've had the Ginger Pirlo, and now we have the Ginger Wilkins . Bit harsh Mark, but I can see where you are coming from. I think he is a great little player, but just wish he would be a bit more direct, and chipping in with the occasional goal would be nice. At at least you did,nt refer to him by Wilkins' other name.....

Hope that the problem yesterday for Barnett was lack of match time/fitness, because otherwise I felt he was just damn lazy. The worst of a bad lot at Tranmere, sure things will be resumed at GM

I am struggling to understand Vernon's role. Anyone feel the same ? As for the ridiculous panic and substitution of Clark ........ This is the first time this season I could see no logic in a few of Mellon's big calls. Hopefully it's a one off.

I am struggling to understand Vernon's role. Anyone feel the same ? I thought he was excellent against Wimbledon and when he came on as a sub v Carlisle when we tried to play some incisive attacking football on the floor. Not surprised that the game completely bypassed him yesterday as we had a "Who can kick the ball furthest" competition...

I have read these posts and re read them. it appears nearly every member of the team and MM got a slating. can we put it down to a bad day in the office for the team and manager, just grateful Micky D is ok and also grateful for Barnetts 1st goal, or have we already forgotten that.
come on you Blues time to lift our heads again against another in form team the Cobblers. one game at a time Town. FS

Barnett does need to get match fit first before we see the best of him, and we need to get wide and supply him with decent crosses.

agree shrewder, but we can read all the comments and form an opinion. so who had a good game on Saturday? I thought Clark was our one bright spark before he was taken off! It was just a bad day at the office though I think. As for Barnett, it was the first time I've seen him play and there was nothing there to tell me that he's a great player worth the £100k, but then the tactics didn't really give an accurate representation of town this season. What we lacked in creativity was matched by Tranmere, who only had 2 other chances that I can remember - one that came off the inside of the post and one from a free kick that forced a good save out of Leutweiler.
