For someone brought in for his experience and knowhow that was a really stupid tackle!

That's a horrible tackle. Completely needless too.
Good job he didn't make contact as that's a leg breaker every time.

The more you see it the worse it gets. Must admit I would have no problem if tackles like that are given 5 match bans across all leagues. Was awful.

Does look like a tackle made by someone whose been out of the game for some time. Late, over the top and aggressive - really not what you want to see from any player.

Poor decision all round, he falls over more than lunges in and Linnington was far too keen to show the red, not a red, and what gets missed is the fact a Newport player kicked out at NKP 5 mins earlier and only got booked

That's as clear a red as you'll see all season for me.

Red card all day long.
Poor tackle.

Do you think MM will get a replacement in for the replacement for Weso!?

Knew it was red as soon as he lunged in. Red mist or just poor timing? Whatever, red card totally justified.

Hoping that MM's view behind closed doors in very much different from his public view on the incident.
Not a great fan of the defend the indefensible Wenger approach.
We can only be thankful that the red card came so late it was difficult for Newport to hurt us.
Southern told us all when he signed that his experience and guile would help us during this crucial part of the season.
Really strange interview by Mellon yesterday. No doubt triggered by a very stressful afternoon.
Who would be a football manager?

Bloody awful tackle.
If that's what Southern is going to bring to the team then he can go straight back to Fleetwood, MM connection or not...

He may well now change his view. After all, he defended none of the red cards given out in previous games. Far from it, he has openly agreed with them.

Just watched it on sky+ and if you pause it just at the point he makes it you can clearly see both feet just off the ground and the studs just aiming for the ankle - potentially an ankle breaker - deffo red..

I wonder if the incident off the ball a few minutes earlier had anything to do with it? Goldson in particular was very wound up.

I suspect so but, at the end of the day, no excuse for an experienced player.

To get yourself sent off for a two-footed lunge in injury time, minutes after coming on for your loan debut, is quite ridiculous. Thanks for nothing and sod off back to where you came from afaic.

Without wanting to be completely pedantic, he made his debut last week, not yesterday.

I fear for our options if Woods/Lawrence pick up an injury.

Without wishing the defend the tackle itself in any way, he is with us till the end of the season, he has the experience and pedigree to contribute once he is once again available, and it was one rash tackle. Yes, unacceptable, but he didn't kill anyone. 'Sod off back' comments don't really bring anything constructive to the situation, just encouraging people to get on his back before he's had a chance to show what he can do.
I wish him all the best once he's recovered from the bollocking that he's sure to have received post-match.

Getting yourself sent off for nothing at the end of an already won game that you've only been involved in for a couple of minutes, and in so doing picking up a suspension (3 games?) that'll mean you being paid to sit in the stands and get even less match-fit is hardly bringing anything constructive either.

Maybe Wildig will get an early re-call? Don't see we have any other CMs left, unless we bank on Woods, Lawrence and Grant being 100% for the next three games.

Still thin on the ground though Yep 4 players to cover 3 positions so no need to panic unless further losses. Looking at it, the Southern/ex Griffith more defensive midfield roles seem to be coming on to protect a lead. IMO, in normal circumstances, Southern wouldn't have started the next 3 games anyway. Wildig isn't that kind of player and I am sure he would be non too pleased being recalled just as cover, just when he is starting to get some regular football somewhere else.

Although watching it on the FLS last night, it was all in a frenetic couple of seconds when Southern himself had gone to ground after almost having his head scythed off by a Newport player.
Then as he was rising, the ball was still there and he lunged in. Yes his studs were up, yes it was a red, but possibly more a wild attempt at the ball while unbalanced as he was rising from the ground, rather than genuine malice.
And if the Newport player had connected with him, a second earlier, it would have been him sent off rather than Southern.
Not very professional though from somebody with so much experience... but let's give him a chance to redeem himself when he returns to hopefully do a good job for us.
But next week for Southend I would rather see somebody with more attacking flair and excitement at the front of midfield. I would like to see Jordan Clark who showed in that 2-0 over Luton just how quick of foot and brain he is. With him teamed up with Grant and Lawrence and Woods deeper, it could give us the skill to break down what will surely be a strong Shimpers' defensive line-up.
