Town’s Development Squad are back in action in the Final Third Development League this afternoon when they take on Walsall. Once again it’s a team made of up of a mixture of pros and youth teamers as Town look to get back to winning ways after a season of two draws, a win and two defeats. The game takes place at Chasetown FC’s Scholars Ground stadium with a 2pm kick-off. Town expected: Callum Burton, Cameron Gayle, Ben Burton, Callum Grogan, Mark Ellis, Anthony Griffith, James Caton, Aaron Wildig, Scott Vernon, Jordan Clark, Ashley Vincent, Ryan Hickman, Alex Ashton, Alex Fletcher, Josh Ginnelly, Kaiman Anderson www.shrewsburytown.com/news/article/development-squad-take-on-walsall-2103235.aspx

Now 3-0 to Walsall. Sounds like the back-ups are hardly covering themselves in glory.

MM has asked that the reserves are ready when opportunities arise in the 1st team. Clearly several of them are not ready at the moment and IMO we may have a busy January ahead.

Sprited second half from Salop and we shudnt have least got on the scoresheet but we was playing a very young Walsall side today and on paper we should coasted today ... Agree with others on todays showing a lot of our fringe players aint quite up to the grade could be a busy January ahead me thinks.....

Another reality check. We have been led to believe we have quality from 1 to 23 but I just don't believe it. Too many such as Vernon, Vincent and Caton do not seem ready or capable of making the step-up to the first team.

So Paul, lets judge the strength of the reserve players by how they play in a team playing their 6/7 match of the season. Or maybe we should judge a player on his ability to make the step up into a first team playing well.. Having only seen 3 first teams games this season it would be stupid of me to comment on a reserve player ability to play for the first team. Personally I would prefer to judging a player say Wildig on how he fitted into the first team when called to do so rather than how he plays in a reserve game.

We've had seasons when the reserves have been winning everything while the first team struggled, I know what I'd prefer. Generally those who have come into the first team from the ressies have done well. Mangan and Clarke haven't been regulars and Grandson didn't get a sniff for a good while but all have played their part when needed. The pros who have disappointed are Vernon (which has really suprised me) Caton (but he's still young), Wildig (very unlucky) Griffith (was always a squad player) and Vincent. I can see the latter two being released in January, though Griffith may yet play a role if we lose Woods and pitches get heavy. Interesting McAllister played in the cup for Stevenage which says a bit about his future.

We lose one game and a pointless reserve game that's only played to keep fitness levels up and some fans go into meltdown.
Look at our bench on a match day, most of them would get in most league 2 teams.
I personally think it would be a waste having first team quality players sitting in the stands. They are young squad players that have potential to grow into first team regulars.
Last season Bradshaw was smashing them in the reserves yet did naff all in the first team.

Agree results not important in reserves and its about fitness too but surely games like this are ideal for fringe players to prove there worth and show Mellon there worthy of a call up I would be playing my b****cks off to impress the gaffer.. too many yesterday dont look quite up to the grade if called upon... not meltdown but a little concerning if we get injuries ...

I see what you are saying especially as you've seen more matches that I've had hot dinners. You'd hope individuals would be shining even if as a team we're a little pedestrian. Are there any youngsters looking the real deal yet?. I remember you raving about Woods a couple of years back so I hope so!

You can always look at it positively, the 1st team lost 3-0 in 45 2nd half mins, at least the Dev Squad took 90 mins for their beating. can't read much in to this result unfortunately but I do believe that some
