Saw strapping on the back of his left (I think) leg tonight suggesting he is carrying a hamstring injury...

I don't know but it's certainly not there to help him with his crossing. Awful delivery for a few weeks now, since Chelsea.

I'm sure he's used the strapping for a few games now. I certainly noticed it on Saturday and I'm sure he had it about a month back.

It's tape, lot of players use it. It's for prevention, not recovery or healing. John Taylor used to wear it too.

You only use strapping to support an underlying anatomical weakness, or to correct a problem. It's not simply applied 'just because'.

It's something called kinesio tape, it's meant to help the muscle work better
This from Skitty on Twitter.

You quite often see Rugby Union players wearing strapping on their thighs.
Not that I've looked that closely.

Not that I've looked that closely. If you check out my manly legs when I'm out jogging you'll also see strapping around the knee to support the joint - as I have had the cartilage removed from both. My point is, it's there for a reason - potentially even just a placebo. All medical evidence thus far indicates strapping does cock all unless there is trauma or an anatomical weakness (usually caused by trauma).

I had a placebo. I could hardly walk for 6 months.

Good marketing for a company that sells this stuff. It's only useful for an existing injury or to benefit the patient psychologically. Absolutely no medical evidence exists that this stuff will enhance performance or otherwise prevent an injury. Soooo... Injury/rehabilitation or sports psychology...?

You are correct that its not been scientifically proved to give benefit other than psychological BUT that doesn't stop companies promoting these benefits and athletes do wear the strapping thinking it could benefit a fit athlete... inc. footballers ..
So could be a misguided 'accessory' following prem players or suggest a slight niggle..but i've got a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of it
Reminds me of Alan Boswell who always wore a bandage on his knee (right I thnk) although seem to remember as a young lad noticing he had it o the opposite knee to usual one game
