Glad to get the win and thought it was pretty comfortable for Town, and should have been more at the end when we were clean through
Disappointed with Walsall looked a very poor, slow and cumbersome side. Can see why they need Bradshaw so much as totally toothless up front.
Would just like to see us up the tempo slightly in games. The delaying tactics and passing deep in our own half keeps possession and is understandable, but we look so much better pressing the opposition and zipping the ball about as we did for the goal

Could well be just the one goal to win it then for either side. Whats the crowd and atmosphere like? Not the best atmosphere but I few funny chants. 1-0 to the sheepshaggers Any old iron? You stole my microwave plus a few others that I cant remember due to my massive headache from cheering on the lads to a much deserved win.

Personally I thought Walsall were very predictable . Can't remember them having a shot at goal . We are quality defensively in my view which gives us a great platform going forward . It's a very long time since I have seen such a good Town team , what an absolute turnaround from last season . It will be a miracle if we can keep Woods and Goldson . Should have scored a few more in my view and certainly Vernon should have scored at the death but hey ho , I' m not complaining . It is an absolute joy to watch us play this season and I hope this match doesn't take too much out of us for the Exeter game because our effort all over the pitch tonight was awesome . Well done Town , well done MM .

JLAA played well tonight I thought, put himself about a lot, good control and ran at them with the ball creating chances I just wish he would have the ability to finish it off with a shot.
Collins was poor in my eyes, court on his heels a few times and didn't put himself about like he usually does but I will allow him an off game every so often.
Grandison is a exciting player to watch going forward and got into some great positions with his tricks. Good performance.
As for 442, it does not suit us and we don't have the players to play it. Changing the formation and tactics because of one player not being available is not healthy and I would like to see someone come in that could cover both wingback positions.

A deserved win against a side who were set up to frustrate and then attempt to nick a goal. I suppose when you have a team from the division above coming here and doing that it can be regarded as a some sort of compliment (or it could be that Walsall aren't really much good.)
In many ways it was a frustrating game, like others I think we are far more effective when we are playing in the opposition's half and trying to move the ball quickly, we didn't really do that enough tonight. That could be because we were playing an unfamiliar formation, with one ore two players playing out of position. It could have been down to the fact that Walsall were a little sharper than the teams we face week in, week out. Their two banks of four were very well drilled but we did sucked into the trap and hit too many long balls which their back four lapped up. We definitely missed Jack Grimmer in my view as I think his speed of thought, his tenacity and technical ability would have helped us impose ourselves better.
Sorry for being a bit picky, especially when we have beaten a team from the league above, perhaps that is an indication of how far we have come since May.

What happened near the end to Goldson? He doesn't normally collapse like that. Did their player make contact.

How many red cards have happened in our games this season? Must be four or five already. Some kind of record we can look to break?! Good result, shame we got such a bum draw in the next round but we've won tougher games this season than Preston away! every game so far except two

MM said in his interview a dead leg and that the Walsall player clipped him.

Another good win tonight.
I thought we struggled a bit in the first half to get used to the new system. But second half we were much better, and definitely the better team. Just a bit annoying that we didn't kill the game off, especially when giving possession and free kicks away in the last few minutes.
And not to mention the great goal by Lawrence!

What happened near the end to Goldson? He doesn't normally collapse like that. Did their player make contact. I didn't see it but it's not like him to dive about. Great moment at the end after he got abuse for getting injured, he turns to the Walsall fans and fist pumps towards them. They wasn't pleased.

MM said in his interview a dead leg and that the Walsall player clipped him. Clipped him? From what I saw their 24 ran past him after a ball that was already out of play - goldie had his back to the oncoming player - and 24 kneed him in the thigh as he went past. Totally needless, should have been a red card. Trouble is Lino nor Ref saw it as everyone was resetting expecting a GK from Jason, who was walking to collect the ball.

Clear red if the ref had seen it and very cowardly thing to do by the Walsall forward. Was also an off the ball shove on Grandison by their fullback late on. Although I'm not sure Grandison even noticed and the Walsall player looked miffed he got no reaction!

Certainly something the ref should put in his post match. And maybe worthwhile the club reviewing any footage to make representations to the FA.

Yea looked like a deliberate knee in the back of the thigh / dead leg... Pretty s**tty thing to do. No wonder 'Bradders' is their hero, they have absolutely ZERO threat without him n his flappy hair up front. All bar one real let off just after HT we looked reasonably comfortable. Not a great game but what can you do when you are playing a team from the division above you and they put as many men behind the ball as they can and stifle the game... Says a fair bit that Saaaalop!!

Thought he caught Connor late down the back of his leg but too far away to see properly. I knew that it must have been bad for Connor to go down and stay down, he simply isn't the type of player to go down and stay down unless something has been done to him. A dead leg suggests that the contact was as El Presidente saw it . That type of injury can take some shaking off, I hope he's all right for Saturday.

I thought we got lucky tonight. Yes we deserved the win, but lucky that Walsall were useless. That formation doesn't suit us at all, we're so narrow it's painful to watch. Well, not painful, but frustrating. We're still good enough to control the game but without that Lawrence screamer we wouldn't have scored, we created little besides our two counters against 10 men late on.
It's a great time to be a Town fan again because I'm finding myself a little disappointed with the manner of our victory against higher league opposition and all I'm worrying about is Mellon considering it an excellent performance because I really don't like that personnel in a 4 3 1 2. It's either 3 5 2 or 4 4 2 with wingers for me. But in League Two we can beat anyone with these players in any formation tbh, just be nice to do it in more style and stick to what we're best at.

I wouldn't say Walsall were useless. They're clearly very secure defensively but a bit toothless up front without Bradshaw. I was surprised that the opposition didn't show more ambition up until we scored. It was clearly a case of whether we could break them down and the one bit of quality in the game proved decisive. But yes, still question marks over 442.

Just out of interest, for Shropshire football trivia brains, this is the first time since the 1995-96 season that the county has had two teams in the Second Round.
That season I see you had an 11 - 2 victory over Marine in the First Round and Telford United beat Witton Albion. Telford went out in the Second Round to Notts County, Shrewsbury soldiered on the the Fourth Round for a date with Liverpool.

I thought we played the formation which suited the players we had available. I much prefer 3 at the back with full- backs pushing on, but with Grimmer out we had to adjust. The first half saw us probe without causing too much trouble, but so did Walsall. It was a case of two sides wary of each other, not wanting to expose themselves too much to a counter attack. Second half was always going to be better, we knew what they had to offer and could deal with it quite comfortably, we just had to show a better cutting edge. The goal was superb, good move and a sublime finish. Smith can look for excuses all he wants, but on the night we were the better side. The worry is that when we make chances we fail to take them.
Collins works hard, but he still "swings" at anything dropping to him in the box. He should have at least hit the target with a chance first half, a carbon copy of the chance he had v. Mansfield. His partner AA was equally poor as far as converting chances. His effort late on was woeful, although his general play at ability to hold the ball, and his strength in the air, was very good. We missed Mangan, and Vernon looked to be a good player when he came on. At least he has a touch of class and , in my opinion, would have finished the chances that fell to Collins and AA. Being very picky, but we need to do better in front of goal.

"Thoughts" is flattering him, more like knee-jerk autospeak reaction. Is there a more one-eyed manager than Smith? Did he manage to keep a straight face when he said "we didn't deserve to lose"? And what's with the "heavy pitch" comment? That would be a feeble excuse if it had been a heavy pitch but it looked in perfectly good nick to me for a late November pitch. Groundo's thoughts on that would be interesting. Walsall met the expected minimum standard criteria - organised, hard-working etc etc. But, as 1-0 wins go, that was an easy one and it wasn't one of our better performances to get it either. Walsall never built any pressure and we looked far more likely to score a second than them equalise, with or without the red card. I'd expect a tense last quarter in a cup tie where we have a 1-0 lead against a team from a higher league. Not last night. When they announced the 4 added minutes I hadn't realised we'd reached the end of normal time, it all seemed so comfortable. But for some lapses in concentration and questionable game management, we could have breezed through injury time as well. I came away pleased with the win but thinking we'll need to play better against Exeter and Burton. Them's my "thoughts", Mr Smith.
