Does this come across as a bit odd to anyone, or is it just me...it's the final paragraph.
Mellon believes his entire defence must work together to deal with Swiss keeper Jayson Leutwiler’s tendency to punch at crosses rather than catch them.
He said: “This is something that we have had to get to used to. Jayson is a continental goalkeeper and chooses to punch more than we’d expect.
“Personally I would prefer it if he caught it but at the end of the day it’s what the lad feels is the best way to handle crosses.”

Not sure, Mellon wasn't a keeper and he has a goalkeeping coach so maybe he's done the sensible thing and taken advice from him. Maybe sometimes you have to trust people to do their jobs in their own way rather than trying to micro manage?

Oh yeah makes a lot of sense, but in 30 years I don't think I've ever heard a manager say that.

If your best goalkeeper's natural option (which will be instinctive) is to punch out the ball, then the other players need to understand that this will happen. It'd be a bit like the best corner kick specialist putting in perfect balls at knee height at the front post and having to train the players to deal with it.

I saw him for the first time last Saturday and was a little surprised at the amount of ground covered by him outside the box. but no damage done. as long as defence are onside with his punching, no problems.

I'm sure MM knew all about Leutwiler's tendency to punch before he signed him. Leutwiler has been trained to handle crosses this way since he was a kid. I'm sure Middlesboro tried to change his approach before us.
Thankfully we've conceded the 2nd least corners in L2 so far this season (5 per match) so less chance of being exposed at set pieces.

Thought Leutwiler played excellent at York yesterday and made a couple of top class saves and dealt with any balls in the box ... big improvement on his early season form and im slowly eating humble pie.. well done owd lad.

The save from the free kick and the one that bounced just in front of him in the first half were very good.
The lad is a good keeper and needed time to settle in.

He also confidently caught the ball under pressure. Brought a cheer from behind the goal.

Another good performance and one world class save.
The lad is a good goalkeeper and is beginning to prove people wrong.

That save in the first minute was off the charts. He got big, big hands to that to keep it out because of the rate it was travelling.

Best save I've seen at the GM...could've easily graced a top flight match - all the better considering it was so early in the match. Only 'fault' of Leuitweiler is his tendency to punch rather than catch crosses, but as a Continental 'keeper, it's probably in his DNA. But the defence are well drilled to react to it. Goldson and Weso were giving him pelters in the second half as his distribution was slower than normal. Still, we've got a Championship level goalkeeper on a two year contract, so can't be bad!

I haven't said so on here, but I've not felt secure with him between the sticks and am now changing my mind. That early save was stupendous and he has got the 3 big lads in front of him to deal with high balls into the box.

We now have a settled back six (back eight if you include Woods and Wesolwski) and we look so tight at the back at the moment.

Only the 3rd goal we've conceded at home this season in league & cup....and two of those were a break away from a Shrews atrack (v Cheltenham) and a penalty today v Pompey.
Not bad stats....long may it continue.
I firmly believe that whatever Chelsea side we face in Tuesday night will find it difficult to break us down at the back....and the longer we hold them at bay, the more chance we have if causing an upset.

Certainly looks a good shot stopper and seems to be getting better at holding his ground at corners and set pieces too
Would like him to come out of his box a little quicker and act as a sweeper, as think he is a little slow to react to dangerous situations. Kicking also needs to improve as a few goal kicks went straight out today and in other games
These aspects of his game can be worked on with the coach though - shot stopping is the main thing and he proved today he's not bad at that

Has anyone else notice that his goal kicks tend to be left fails biased? Always tend to go to left Han side of the pitch....and I've never seen him kick the ball out of his hands...always waits for the opposition to retreat before dropping the ball and then placing the kick.
Any opponent just need to get their strikers to put pressure on him and it could prove costly.

Anyone else think it was odd when he got Grimmer to run over to the bench to ask them what side the penalty was going to be put.
Understand looking into it before the game but when Grimmer pointed to the left for all to see it kind of defeated the object. Unless it was some over elaborate mind games!

It didn't help that as the player ran up to kick the ball, leutwiler started leaning towards his left. Great save prior to that though.
