From Shrewsweb - Town’s Chief Executive Matt Williams is looking forward to welcoming Chelsea to the Greenhous Meadow:”To be drawn against a side such as Chelsea is a great honour for the club and the game promises to be one of the biggest in the clubs history.
An honour? Steady on old chap. we've earned our right to play them - not just through winning the previous rounds, but we're a bona fide league club too you know... One of the biggest games in the club's history? Hang on, we've played them quite a few times and won more than a few. It's the league cup FFS, the Dagenham & Redbridge game a couple of seasons ago was a bigger game. Still, gotta love the enthusiasm

All I see is a CE talking it up, getting the fanbase, and more importantly the town excited, with all eyes on a lucrative sell out!
The man leads from the front, and if hes our main cheerleader out there that's great. The Shop, the badge, the quick work sorting the ticketing arrangements, looking at extra seats and several other things (such as helping shape a great team on the pitch through some decent negotiations with MM and the chairman)... the mans done a hell of a lot in whats still just 3/4 months.
What excites me more is some of his other ideas yet to come to fruition that have been discussed with the SP. Confidential matters but you have to hope hes left to get on with the job hes doing as there could be just as many exciting things coming forward.

I agree he seems a real asset to the club, not knocking that. Just I cringe when people are over deferential to other clubs no matter who they are. Personally I hate 'em all, it's only the degree that varies from club to club And hasn't he heard? "We're Shroooooosbreee Town, Shroooosbreee Town FC, by FAR the greatest team, the world has EVER seen" No need to doff our caps.

Honour could he have meant it in similar terms as ''prize''.

perhaps he was cadging for raffle prizes from London's richest club for Town's Christmas Draw. Oscar would do! I deprecate doffing caps as well! Roland is worth 10 Olligarchs! doh! there go our raffle prizes.

Of course he could have been misquoted. What he said, I am sure, is that it is such an honour for Chelsea to come here!!

Of course it's an honour.
We're playing one of the richest clubs on the planet. Managed by one of the most successful managers.
Champions league and UEFA cup winners recently.
Sure, we've earned the right. The right to sit at their table.
He's got it bang on in my view.
Comparison with Chelsea 25 years ago is redundant because £500 million of Russian oil profits changed everything.

An honour my arse. I'm with the monkey on this. We've earned the right to play Chelsea, its no more of an honour if Brighton or Sheff U were turning up to play. Not as if we're meeting royalty is it. Its 11 blokes who kick a bag of wind about. Just cos they have spent a shed load of money doesn't mean their s**t don't stink. Lets not start all this b******s, we had enough of that when we welcomed (with open arms) Liverpool that one time...

I certainly don't see it as an honour.
Disappointed to hear a club official state such words to be honest. We might be excited, expectant or indeed thrilled but we should never forget who we are and where we have come from. We have every right to be where we are in this cup competition certainly not grateful that some so called behemoth of English football is gracing us with their presence. Draw them, play them, look to beat them, that's the deal, irrespective of who it is.

I'm with Uncle Monkey, Jamo et al on this one.
Sets the wrong tone for me - like we're grateful for them turning up (a bit like the Liverpool non-event under Fred Davies)
I don't see their spending power as something to genuflect before.
Let's not fall into the trap of showing our opponents too much respect.

Playing them on an equal footing having got through three rounds to be here, no need to bow down to them and grovel at them agreeing to play us Also shows rather a lack of understanding of our recent past by suggesting the games importance. Play-off games; promotion and relegation games have all been much more important. Lucrative tie but not even in top ten of important games of the last ten seasons

I assume there will be blue and amber caps in the new range of town gear, so we can all doff them to our premiership opposition in future cup games?

It is an honour, and I look forward to Mr Jarvis giving the players and of coarse the supporters of Chelsea football club a right royal welcome.

Very polite and courteous piece.
Anyone think there is a little psychology in there? Play on the underdog tag, give them huge compliments then take them by surprise when we match them on the pitch?
The improved communication has a downside- everyone has an opinion to beat them with whenever they disagree (which is pretty much every statement!)

I don't think you have to roll over and have your tummy tickled to be courteous and recognise ther status of you opponents.
All the more desire to beat them.
When is the last time Shrewsbury hosted a top 4 premiership side at home in a competitive fixture?
By turnover in 2013 only Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester United were bigger clubs...

Tell you what there's still nonsense coming out of that Club. Last year it was nonsense about the play - offs this year it's not chasing the money and charging loyal non - STH an extra fiver and now this.

There are benefits of course to sucking up to them a bit. This is an opportunity for the club to show that we're not just a backwater club with a backwater attitude, that we do actually have a decent footballing philosophy and history with good training facilities etc that a modern club should have.
The opportunities for a bit of corporate networking and perhaps establishing links that might provide loanee's from promising young Londoners, Chelsea or otherwise, is something that shouldn't be ignored and if that means a little bit of 'sucking up'is needed then so be it.
Let's not forget that there is basically Barnet and Wimbledon in the lower league London world, hardly inspiring for any club to send young loanees and youth prospects to. At least we have the opportunity to show a big club that we look after our youngsters really well, give them opportunities and have good technical staff to improve their abilities.
Never underestimate the power of networking. It will great to hear Jose not only congratulate us on our fair, hardworking victory but also to say how impressed he is with the club.

Give Mr Williams a break! He has worked his proverbials off for this club in the past few months and look at the position we are in now. I will allow him a little latitude when he is being interviewed about a fixture that has galvanised support and raised expectations about our club. Keep up the good work MW it is an honour to have you as our CE.

I've cringed often at the words of our new CEO but I think this is more down to his over exuberance and enthusiasm. I don't doubt that he will enjoy rubbing shoulders with his Chelsea counterparts but will be no stranger to this after his EPL stint with Blackpool.
Rather pleased with the job he's done so far so not going to mark him down too much for this one.

Probably because I'm a lower league Philis Dean, I think Accrington Stanley visiting us is a greater honour. Their players are paid by their hardworking supporters.

I looked at one of the Chelsea forums not long after we drew them, a few of them remember the days when the two clubs were 'equals' and we used to beat them in front of 8,000 at Stamford Bridge.

am I right in thinking Chelsea have a Sunday game before Town's Tuesday Jaunt? I think Drogba ma start and a mixture of youth and stars on the bench in the very unlikely chance it should go pear shaped for them. I suggest Town may do best from set pieces, but in case it goes to E/T (LOL), Town should be practising penalty taking.
hoping for a very heavy wet pitch. a great leveller. FS
