He won every aerial challenge and looked solid. Point the finger at some of his distribution by all means, but remember to point the same finger at Connor. Generally the defence were the least of our worries today, whilst none of them were perfect, they did achieve a second successive clean sheet without too many scares. I notice Grandison picked up the club MOM, a credit to him that he again looked our biggest threat going forward but also a reflection on the issues with our strike-force at present.

Stop 'scapegoating' the strikers.

Bit unfair to single out one player when the team had a shocker. Newport had a game plan and bullied and outmuscled the Shrews. They closed out the middle playing 3 at the back, allowing their wings press up and to stop the ball out from the back 4, opponents have now sussed the way that Shrews play. All of the back 4 were wasteful in distribution but you don't pick them for their ball-playing skills. KP was perhaps best of the 4. I also think a factor is the number of games the lads have now played as there didn't seem to be the same energy in them today, some looked a bit leggy. Vincent had a few good runs and Grandison towards, the end had a little space but tactically it was predictable and if fans can read it then certainly opponents can and prepare to deal with it.

How many times do we start sluggishly? Is somebody putting Mogadon in their pre-match Lucozade? Any opposition manager with half a clue will tell his team to come flying out of the blocks and there is a good chance of snaffling a goal against us.

Yes very noticeable and the team are aware of it. Weso said in his pre-match interview that we intended to be the ones flying out of the blocks and gaining the upper hand As I it was we didn't see the ball for the first ten minutes as we chased shadows.

But by half time we had changed our shape and pretty much minimised the threat which made the AA/Griffith substitution even harder to understand.

Ellis was poor yesterday but he is still coming back from an injury and will improve. As said above the slight slump in form does coinside with his return but also with a change in formation (why?) and other players being injured or dropped (Vincent & MD) if we played the same formation with players in their proper positions things would improve. One reason I think we can't the 352 that served us well is nkp couldn't play the wing back role as well as he does the left back role and to drop him would be madness due to his excellent performances there. In short Ellis was poor but he is not solely responsible for anything and will improve.

Is it Ellis' fault we've only scored 1 goal in 5 games?

Competent defender. If you want to have a go at distribution what about connor's tuesday? And agree about Vernon.... very poor in front if goal

Ellis committed to tackles and he missed a few which led to a striker getting into free space but this was then mopped up. That is what makes a team, there is someone to support and mop up mistakes. Ellis made some excellent blocks and tackles, but they aren't noticed. Grandison let some attacks go past him, Woods struggled with stronger/ taller players, Clark was struggling to do what he does well consistently, Mangan worked hard but took a little too long to link with other players and some of his fancier stuff ended with him losing the ball, Vernon didn't attack their goal well.
Griifiths came on and surprisingly replaced JLAA who was having a good game, however this sorted out midfield, put Clark on the wing and brought strength into it. This freed up Weso and Woods, Vernon attacked more, Grandison came forward occasionally too.
Two more subs and Vincent was almost playing as our most threatening player.
What was wrong at the start? Formation? Players? Had they all had a Horlicks prematch?
I would like to see Vincent get a start next league game as I think he deserves it.

It often takes a while for a new manager with new players to find the most effective combination, MM is clearly struggling with this.
No doubt we have talented individuals but I'm not sure we have the right mix.
No panic though, it's early days and the second half of the season is when things are won (or lost).
