Its always worth experimenting when buying train tickets.
A few years ago I worked out that its valid to travel to Chester via Crewe. (All prices shown are with one adult and one child with family rail card) Chester costs £8.95 return and Crewe costs £11.65 so what I do when we play Crewe is buy a ticket to Chester and bingo saved a few quid.
Now I've done some experimenting and these will save you money. If you plan on going to Newport then direct it will cost me £33.40 but if I buy a ticket from Shrewsbury to Cwmbran its £25.30 and then a ticket from Cwmbran to Newport its £3.90 =£29.20. Doing it to Cardiff would also save you money.
Manchester is another one you can save money on simply buying one ticket Shrewsbury to Chester £8.95 and One ticket Crewe to Manchester £8.05 = £17.00 when direct Shrewsbury to Manchester is £21.25. Anyhow hope this helps some You can do the same to Tranmere via Chester.
Hope this helps.

So how does it work if you leave the platform at Crew with a ticket showing the destination Chester and its checked ?
The reason for this could be there's a direct train to Chester that doesn't go on to Crew but goes to Llandudno Junction..

The reason for this could be there's a direct train to Chester that doesn't go on to Crew but goes to Llandudno Junction.. You have a valid ticket to go as far as Chester, its a valid route. You don't have to go as far as Chester if you don't want to. If you want to leave the platform you can, no barriers at Crewe either. I've done it every time we have played Crewe. I've done it to go to Manchester also. You can also do it to Longport(Port Vale) and save a couple of quid.

I did a Real Ale tour of Reading last year , the train was Telford , Birmingham New St , Reading but by breaking the journey at Banbury it was £14 less , same train just swapped the ticket over at Banbury . Did Leeds as well , going via Brum was £99 , going Wolvo - Manchester - Leeds was £45 .

Criminal how train operators get away with this.
Tickets from Salop to either Leicester or Loughborough are the same price but off-peak tickets are only available going to Leicester, so if you buy an anytime return to Loughborough you could end up paying 9 quid more for the distance of 12 miles and where a single would only cost you £3.
Of course they don't tell you this. And if you try board the Loughborough train at Leicester without a ticket its an instant £50 fine.

Caution needed though trainline was a lot cheaper for a a trial run using stafford to London. Remember National Rail Enquiries and most Booking Offices can sell exactly the same ticket as Trainline without the commission. Train Split is handy, if you've ever attempted to workout where to split a ticket it can save a few hours it can give you the cheapest split but there is no obligation to purchase off them you can use your information to buy from the above. It's also handy if you want to buy all your tickets before you travel as for some reason you cannot buy Online from Arriva and collect the proceeding split Tickets from the starting Station. It's not fool proof and has not yet got the cheapest options for Stations in the Midlands Via New Street. If you use Trainline be warned of those Pop-up boxes that make it look like your getting a deal with Trainline. They appear after ordering and may fool you into joining a Voucher scheme called completesave. I got caught with a Catalouge and found that i'd signed up for a Voucher deal that was taking £10 a Month out of my Bank Account. Completesave first admitted to taking out Three months and so offered £30 but after checking with my Bank I discovered it was at least 12 Months. I then rang them back in Switzerland and they then said I had been a member and had paid 18 months £180. they returned the lot. A quick internet search will show how many have been duped with Trainline, Argos and some Train Companies being the most common sources

Good spot, but isn't this ridiculous? Where pricing is confusing consumers will pay more than they need to.
