Very disappointing result.
Started with just AA upfront, Caton on the right wing , Griffith in midfield. Disappointed as this appeared to be a cautious approach by MM.
PNE had the majority if possession first half but no real chances . Town never looked like threatening and failed to get the tippy tappy passing game going.
Second half Pne started to run with the ball against our defenders and were knocking on the door when Nellon decided to go for a substition...... Too late Preston scored.
It was only when Collins, Vernon, and Monsters inc came on that we looked like we wanted to win the game but all to late in the day.
Can't understand why we changed the side so radically if we wanted to go far in this conpetition. If we started with the side v Luton I think we might have got something out if the game.
However this was a stern test and highlighted a few shortcomings in the side.
Caton certainly blew his chances of breaking into the side. No confidence to run at defenders........
Mr Lootwiler.........I still have little confidence in this guy. Preston peppered our box with crosses and not once did he make an attempt to come and collect. In the second half made a bizarre half save that ran Joe Anyons attempt at Notts County a close second place. Distribution was poor and in the second half kept launching goal kicks to the left hand touch line that invariably went out for a throw.
Grandison, firmly in the Jim Holton mould, very good in the air but in all other departments one step away from a howler. Was caught in possession a couple of times tonight and made some poor passes that immediately lost us possession and put the defence under pressure.
Mr Griffith.........not sure what the point of this guy is and on tonight's performance will expect him to be a bench warmer.
Finally, the 4000 crowd tonight dispels the myth that if you make tickets cheap, fans will turn up in big numbers. £6 for me and my son was great value but shocking atmosphere......could hear Melon screaming clearly from the technical area.
A game we lost tonight because of an unambitious team selection.
Roll on Hartlepool.

Agree 100% with the above. Shame we didn't start the second half with Collo, Wes and Vernon, maybe we could have turned things round a bit. This is only the second time I've seen our new keeper (first was at Alty), but he really doesn't inspire confidence... and the time he took to get things moving each time the ball was in his hands helpfully gave Preston plenty of time to regroup every bloody time, before humping it up to no one in particular or straight into touch. Was he having a bad day or is this normal?
Don't know whether it was the absence of Goldson that affected Grandison, but every time the ball was at his feet he scared the life out of me. Caton and Griffiths were AWOL... didn't even realise Caton was on the pitch till the end of the first half.
All in all, plenty of discussion points for Mr Mellon tomorrow one feels...

I guess it may have been nearer the 2000 mark without the cheap pricing. Probably make less from the gate even with twice as many there, so I guess it depends on how much they make from the extras like program sales, buffet sales etc as to whether it can be deemed to make financial sense. Given that half the gate money goes to the opposition in cup games, it probably is better for the home side to charge less and get more in and spending on the extras, if they can get the away side to agree to that. There is also more ephemeral considerations such as rewarding fans with a cheap game, the hope of getting in a few new fans or attracting back some that haven't been going, and a general better feeling from not having an almost totally empty stadium.

This was the reminder I needed never to attend a jpt game again .
Strange atmosphere in the stadium and a flat performance until Collins came on. Griffith is good at what he's good at , getting stuck in and roughing opponents up but I am not sure he's what we need . Nobody really stood out in a town shirt. Caton was very poor , leutwiller looked shaky and I would be surprised if grandison keeps his place . Only man that stood out for me was akpa Akpro . I'm not disappointed were out !

It's a competition few want too watch and perhaps few Club's are bothered about and unless it's on TV possibly with little or a negative financial benefit till later rounds. Clubs have no choice but to host it and just do what they can to make it worthwhile for those who do turn up. And 4,000 isn't too bad considering only a Yorkshire derby just about bettered it and Accy Stanley only got 800 in!!. The cup has a place as being the the only one L1 & L2 club's realistically can win and a trip to Wembley is always welcome. The only way I see it improving gates is to either do what the League Cup did and play an early round on a Saturday before the league Kicks-off or play during the international break.

Have zero interest in ever attending an JPT game.
Fair play to those who went.

If we were going to choose a game to lose this season this would have been it, but still a shame and a really poor game to watch.
I was disappointed that Halstead and Wildig were not available to have a chance - Caton really didn't make the best of his opportunity and I think that relegates him down the pecking order for a while - IMO if Robinson had taken that slot in the team we would have been a different proposition altogether.
Most worrying is Woods who according to the MM interview may have picked up a groin "overuse" injury.

Not too disappointed to go out as in the whole scheme of things we have bigger fish to fry.
However imagine Mellon will be a little disappointed that some squad players didn't really push themselves forward in the game. Goes to show a few injuries to key players and we might not be quite as effective as we have been in the first games of the season

Disappointing performance, thought we would have given it more of a go. By the time we did it was too late.
I would have taken Caton off by half time, he hardly had a touch.
Certainly not the level of performance and cohesion that I saw on Saturday. Ah well, we still have 2 other cup competitions to focus on!

Beware Canaries of a wounded Shrew. We have Claws!. agree this was the game to lose if we had to. do hope woods is soon recovered. H/pool may be a tough nut to crack away with a useful G/K. still awaiting an email from town regarding Cheltenham Game. may have to use the Candlestick phone to book.

I love the way we are disappointed to narrowly lose to a team going for league one promotion.

On the basis of comments re the keeper, it's a shame Callum Burton wasn't given a game.

Actually came away from the game feeling quite positive. Compared to the embarrassment of the league game here last season things look much, much brighter. Couldn't tell much difference between a team likely to get into the championship and a league two team.
Most interesting to me was the information relayed to the players from the touchline. MM kept telling them to "keep passing it" and "keep it moving" - a welcome change from the past couple of years of hoofball.
Positives: (i) Really pleased we signed Griffith who always put in a good performance against us for the Vale. Thought he did well and made some good crunching tackles; and (ii) Ellis coming back and proving we have 4 centre halves who are comfortable on the ball.
Negatives: (i) Like everyone else Caton was anonymous for me, but he is still very raw so no conclusions to be drawn yet; and (ii) Cameron Gayle was pretty poor once again. For me he is the weak link in the team and I don't see much cover for RWB/RB. Thought several poor first touches either butchered good opportunities or gave the ball away.

Good thing from last night was that Ellis played and played very well imo........and will come in for Grando I reckon who did his best to cement a place in the reserves anyway.....
GK reservations about him growing by the week....... inexperienced I know but I feel Burton or Halstead will get a chance soon unless Leuty pulls his socks up.......
How the hell he doesn't get booked nearly every time he takes a goal kick I don't know, worse than Chris Neal when he was time wasting.....
No tempo in our play until Collins and Weso appeared...Collins makes runs which drag the defenders all over the place and Weso speeds the game up, which was what was needed last night..........
MM would have learnt a lot from the game and I'm confident normal service will be resumed on Saturday.........

Good to be able to hear the instructions from the technical area

Yeh from 2000 to around 2005/6 I think - from memory it wasn't all of them, presumably was decided based on finishing places the previous season.
