When was the last time we played a formation that was not 442 and won two games in a row?

When was the last time we saw 2 centre-backs driving forward into midfield , with the ball, and playing decent balls into the forwards. I always thought centre-backs went sideways before playing very short balls to our players who were marked tight, or hoofed it forward, hopefully.
Is this the right way to go on. Sort it out Mellon, you plonker.

What was great to see was Goldson's last 'punt' forward was a pin point long pass to Ginnelly who received it perfectly and managed to run into the box with it before getting tackled.

Having read Connor's interview in the Star and his comments about being Captain, I was so sure that that was what he was going to do. He obviously buys into MM's ideas about encouraging youth players and giving us a chance to see what they can do.

Last time I remember us playing another formation other than 442 or 451, under Simpson I believe, some of the idiots at the back of 19 tried to start off a chant of '4-4-2 always works'

Looks like we are closing in on it in League games. Best I can find is six matches in 1961-62 (3 wins, 3 draws) finished the season in 19th place. Also six matches in 1978-79 (4 wins, 2 draws) I hope everyone knows where we finished at the end of that season! If you include the two league cup matches this is our best start to a season since originally joining the league in 1950.

Also a 433 against Staines for 20 minutes with Elder and Bright on the pitch.

I really like this formation. Yet to be seen if a decent side can exploit us with long diagonal balls in the channels like leicester tried a few times .

For me 3-5-2 gets the absolute best out of Clark and Grandison, while also making our midfield looks rock solid.
It is also playing to the strengths of both NKP and Goldson, and to some extent Demetriou.
It's certainly no less attacking.
The cost is a player like Vincent or Caton who probably don't have enough defensively. While Gayle is probably more suited to being a traditional full back.
The version of 4-4-2 we play with two deep holding midfielders leaves quite a gap between strikers and midfield too.
It's the best I've ever seen it played by a Shrewsbury side because it's not done defensively but to play to the strengths of several players.

I thought that Gayle did some nice linking up with other players and regularly came down to the opposition goalline, admittedly I can't remember that many crosses from him but I'm sure there were and if thats his weakness then training should help iron that out.

We've won 2 games playing 3-5-2 and 3 playing 4-4-2. 3-5-2 has certainly worked well the last two games but it's very early days and I'm not sure Luton yesterday would have posed much threat regardless of what formation we played.
What's great is we've a manager who seems flexible and is not stuck on 4-4-2

It's helped us defensively and offensively by putting the right players in the right place. Of course it's only two games, but what a fabulous two games.

Gotta disagree with you here Thought Gayle looked a bit weak in a 4-4-2 but in this 532 formation his defensive vulnerability isn't as clear. Demetriou is relishing the extra freedom this formation brings Personally I don't actually think Vincent is that good from what I've seen and I've not seen Caton for more than half an hour, so I'm not really sure what we're missing out in this formation. Does take the p**s slightly though. We've got a new manager, 17 new players, yet we just randomly switch to a 532 formation and knock out senior competition and win the next game, meanwhile all I keep hearing on 5live is how difficult it is for man utd's players to adapt to a 532 formation

Agreed it seems we've dropped upon a good formation to suit our new squad. Gayle is not your standard attacking wing back is he? But I take your point, having him a bit further forward feels a bit safer. Vincent has been ok but we have had far more width from our wing backs, and Clark in the centre currently looks untouchable. I cannot see a situation in which we would go back to 4-4-2 lightly except if someone picks up an injury.

Funny isn’t it.
I thought Gayle didn’t look comfortable at RB/RWB and looks better at RB in a 4-4-2.
With Ellis fit I’d love to see Grandison replace Gayle. Just imagine him marauding up and down the right flank.
We have played lots of formations over the last few seasons, but this season it seems to me so far that we have the players who are able to adapt.
Without a doubt Clark seems best suited to a free role behind the front two.

Told him his team should watch the video of our last two games to see how it is done

Many lower league managers (including, I suspect, GT) would not even contemplate playing a midfield triumvirate of Woods, Weso & Clark because of their lack of "physical presence".
Referees these days are far more protective than they used to be, but I imagine that some opponents will attempt to bully our boys off their game.

However it would be harsh on Gayle who has impressed me this season. When you think the likes of Ellis, Vincent, Lawrence, Robinson, Managan didnt start on Saturday then the manager really does have some big selection headaches (isnt it great to say that)

To return to the original question 5 wins & 2 draws from 7 competetive games is our best ever opening sequence
Previously we have 3 times managed 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat 1958-59 beat Hartlepool, Gateshead, Coventry, Aldershot, Gillingham; drew with Gateshead, lost to Exeter - Finished 3rd 2003-04 beat Burton, Accrington, Farnborough, Dagenham, Tamworth; drew with Margate, lost to Chester Finished 3rd 2010-11 beat Bradford City, Charlton, Macclesfield, Stockport, Oldham; drew with Aldershot lost to Stoke finished 4th

We didn't lose a league game until Boston United beat us 4-3 on 16th Feb 1946. In the process 14 matches were won and 5 drawn, scoring 76 goals. In terms of league and cup matches we managed 10 games unbeaten (8 wins) until Walsall beat us 4-1 on 24th November in the second leg of the FA Cup preliminary round. We had won the first leg 5-0.

For their set pieces Grandison didn't have a man. He just sat on our penalty spot aiming to get his head on it.
If he keeps that up, he'll be the first time I ever remember a member of the defending team needing to be man marked out of an attacking set piece.

We currently have a better home goals against average than the likes of Chelsea, Juve & Bayern. One of the best in Europe especially considering we've played (22) many more games than most of our rivals on the list. Grudging respect to Sarfend too I guess....
Olympiakos - 16 - 0.50 Valencia - 16 - 0.50 Angers - 15 - 0.47 Celtic - 17 - 0.47 Guimaraes - 15 - 0.47 Valladolid - 17 - 0.47 Chelsea - 16 - 0.44 Juventus - 16 - 0.44 Bayern Munich - 14 - 0.43 Lille - 17 - 0.41 Shrewsbury - 22 - 0.41 Southend - 22 - 0.41 Atromitos - 15 - 0.40 Troyes - 16 - 0.38 Karlsruhe - 14 - 0.36 Sp Braga - 14 - 0.36 Benfica - 14 - 0.29 Porto - 15 - 0.20
