still miss his dulcet tones on a saturday afternoon as we tune into radio 5 for the results before back to Radio Sloppy for The Verdict.

He did once read out Shrewsbury Town 11 Marine 2.

He was unique.
Before the age of instant information/results/scores he was the man.
When overseas his was the voice on the BBC World Service that was the link to home and Shrewsbury Town.
A sort of comfort blanket. The dodgy reception, moving the radio around to get a better signal and hoping it wouldn’t fade before getting to Salop.
The change in voice gave it all away, so by saying “Shrewsbury Town 1......” the change in tone led to joy, despair, or indifference.
A few days later a letter (ask your parents kids) would arrive with a Shropshire Star report sent by my mum to put it all into context.
Football seemed so much more exciting then.
I actually feel sad about this.

Bournemouth 0 Shrewsbury town 0. oh those tones. read the results for 40 years, recently retired and contracts throat cancer. dies aged 78. RIP James Alexander Gordon. do hope the football is better up there.

My brother and I used to try to guess the scores just by listening to the tone of his voice. Just thinking about that reminds me of growing up and Saturdays listening to the results gathered round our tiny tv. He will be missed. RIP
