No open day this year...the Chairman does not want the great unwashed running around his Stadium.

Official reason was trying new things I think. In my experience the chairman peronally can't wait to show the great unwashed what he has acheived with the stadium, very welcoming. Maybe he felt a bit down about inviting the fans in after such a poor playing season and so much criticism?

Or an alternative view was that the club wants to engage with the fans throughout the season so rather than having a open day they will havelots of events e.g. the cooking, blind football and ground painting ......

The only event I will be interested in, is the "putting the ball in the back of the net", preferably on a Saturday afternoon by players wearing blue and amber.

It does seem a bit strange. With all the changes in players and backroom staff, I'd have thought Juan might have been arranged. It also brings in a few quid, and would have brought some families in, which could have created a bit of a buzz about the place.
I blame Ryan Jervis.

It is the CEO's exact words that he doesn't like them and that is why there is not one this year. Shame really

Don't understand this at all...
CEO going on about maximising commercial opportunities......engaging with the Community.....trying to find the fans of tomorrow etc, etc, etc.
Ok maybe he does want to do more different things in the future, that's great and to be applauded, but this is "now" and I cant see it in any other way than a missed opportunity....
Most bizarre if you ask me.........
Anyone would think Season Ticket sales were up 700 on last season, not down......

Did like the previous ones they did where fans could watch a training session and the the players stayed behind and signed autographs.
Would be a good way for young fans to get to know the players and start to identify with them. Wouldn't cost much to put on either

I understand not having an open day.
And still think it's a missed opportunity.
Leisurely walking around in a gathering of a couple of thousand fans catching up with friends is a very positive experience.
It'll certainly negatively affect membership of fans groups as it's their main sign up opportunity.
And merchandise sales too, I'd barely consider ever going in the club shop except on a day like that, where they could have everything set out in the sovereign suite.

The short term ecomony saving in time of saving in staff / player time will impact on the renewals of most if not all of the supporter groups in membership and fundraising. This in turn means less money for future donations / investment . An even bigger loss is , as you say, the missed opportunity for a large number of fans to from all areas of the ground to mix with players and club staff. An ideal opportunity to bring us all closer together missed in favour of a chance to charge to see the players train I assume .

Greatest shame about it is the fact that children won't be able to visit. Was always one of my favourite things to do. Meet players and see 'inside' the club that I love...
I'm sure there is a legitimate reason for it.

Always been a very positive experience for so many supporters and an ideal opportunity to get families to the ground and that often means new supporters into the club. Also an opportunity to meet the players and we have 16 new faces! It is a personal opinion but I always looked forward to Open Day, meeting up with friends, getting talking about the new season etc. I hope the new ventures to replace the Open Day will be varied and be able to attract many follwers.

The Open Day has always been a positive experience for me - a pleasant time in a relaxed atmosphere,an air of anticipation, a chance to meet new players.
I'm forming an opinion that we have a talented guy when it comes to player recruitment and contracts, but a CEO who really is learning on the job, and dropping a few clangers on the way.
To attempt to introduce changes to matchday ticketing (because dynamic pricing was too complex for fans to understand) which our online ticket system does'nt seem able to currently support (multi-game flex ticket), to charge to meet the new manager (through the form of a dining event) to charge children to meet the players ( through a junior membership scheme) to say that season tickets are being held at second stage early-bird prices (£330) when the online system has been and is still showing £400, to get the facts wrong about the number of season tickets sold - all perhaps modest and forgiveable individual mistakes but ones which aren't exactly winning over the hearts and minds of the broad fanbase.
The dedicated core of 2000ish STHs won't agree with me, the ones who've been to most of the friendlies won't either, but you have to win over the disillusioned who have drifted away in sizeable numbers from regular match attendance. Without them STFC is destined to become the Perpetual YoYo Club.
Shrewsbury Town FC is not, and cannot afford to be a charity. However to want to raise prices and charge for every single event at a time when the Club should be trying to win back as many fans as possible displays a lack of appreciation of what works at STFC.
I do feel particularly sorry for the support organisations - Super Blues, Shrewstrust, and OSC.
The decision to ditch the Open Day should have been canvassed via the Fans' Parliament.
A major missed opportunity.

Me and the lads really enjoyed last night at Alty, checking out all the new players for the first time and really encouraged by what we've seen. My ten year old's only question at the end was 'when's the Open Day?' Says it all to me. A completely new squad, a new set of 'heroes' for the kids. Living up here, my kids haven't and don't have the chance to participate in the local junior stuff that goes on so all I'll say is it's a shame. And an opportunity lost on both a bonding level with the fans and also on a commercial level. Quite surprised at MW regarding this one.

Spartan....you are spot on with your post. The decision to ditch the Open Day was taken without any consultation with the fan base ie OFC, ShrewsTrust or the Fans Parliament; in fact , as a Board Member of ShrewsTrust I am still waiting for our first meeting with the the CEO. Without wishing to sound boring or being an old fart, Spartan is right in his comments and if the club is not careful it will start to alienate the hard core support base, a fan base that turns up every week, doesn't want to get involved in supporter groups or initiatives, just wants to turn up when they fancy it and hopefully watch the town play well and go home having had a good experience. With all due respect STFC has been living and functioning in the past and the whole culture within the club, not without, needs dragging up, and this appears to be the remit of the new CEO. However this is Shropshire and not Blackpool or the North West generally. There are ways of doing things in this part of the woods, and ways you don't do things. And Roland should remember this. I'm pleased with the way the manager has gone about things and I hope the team gels quickly and we get the results we all yearn for, but Mr Williams, don't steam roller over the people that really matter...ultimately you may well be proved to right in your assertions and actions but you've got to take the supporters with you.

Its a real shame, I work most Saturdays so I don't get to as many games as I'd like and the open day was always a good way to get a shirt meet friends, and my kids to meet the players etc. We always ended up having a bite to eat and a drink so money lost. Also so on the radio MW was saying he could not believe the taxi driver saying things had changed and it was not the same. MW said It was much better now, and he said it is great for parking. Well to be honest we don't seam to make any more money than before yet it costs me £5.00 more if I want to park park near the ground . Before If i had no work on a sat I could decide on the day and just go straight to the ground and pay at the gate. Don't get me wrong we needed to new ground and all that could go with it but I think they should be doing more to get people to the ground look round meet the players and want to see football There! Good luck to Town this year.

I think that this arbitrary decision made by MW without any consultation whatsoever with the fan base is seriously open to question.
If he's to maintain any credibility, then some sort of explanation as to why it has been ditched and some information as to what possible alternatives are being considered would be appreciated.
Otherwise we are heading back towards the take it or leave it attitude which has alienated most supporters in the past.

Training sessions are sort of open anyway.
I watched one the other week after picking up my season ticket. I had an insightful chat with a member of the coaching staff who was also kind enough to point out the new players and trialists.
So is the Club going to stop people from observing training because they haven’t paid a tenner to be in a club?

New broom and all that....
When a new CEO enters the building he will undoubtedly leave his mark. On the plus side MW has worked wonders playing a big role in bringing in this new squad. I get the feeling that this is one of MW's strengths.
On the other hand we have had the pricing error, 'Boathouse gate' and the missing open day.
A mixed bag but running a football club isn't easy. Unpopular decisions have to to be made. In Matt's case he seems open to feedback and is more than happy to reverse the decisions that don't work for the fans.
Next season I envisage a revamped open day on the eve of our return to League One. Hundreds of supporters lining up to buy a new Blue and Amber stripped kit adorning a Loggerheads badge. MW will have resolved previous supplier issues and all will be well with the world....
