Potentially the best group of central midfielders we have had for years. Having watched the game last night my pecking order is Lawrence, Woods, Wesolowski, Wildig then Macallister. However, as a combination and because of their experience I think MM will start with Lawrence and Weso. Shame for Clarke because I think it may be his best position but I think he's going to end up filling in elsewhere.

Lawrence and Weslowski then Wildig and Woods. I think Woods will find league 2 a tougher proposition due to the physicality and his size. At the moment I would put Wildig ahead of Woods.

Woods and Lawrence were head and shoulders above everyone last night

That may well have been the case although Weslowski was rested due to injury and I would be very surprised if he is not a permanent fixture in the side during the season!

Why is it that supporters always think that the "new" signings" are better than the players we already have? Lawrence and Wesolowski are good, no argument, but the best midfield partnership is Woods and Wildig. Lawrence has the skill and experience, but I feel Woods is better on the ball and has a better "engine". Wilding the same, but a tad stronger. I agree about Clarke, an excellent player, very fast and has the ability to beat a man, so where he fits in I don!t know. Mellon has some big decisions to make.

My own assessment is based on what I've seen in 4 pre season games. Lawrence has shown glimpses of his quality but last night was head and shoulders above the others. Woods has been one of the stand out players in pre season for me and as a potential ball winner, Weso just offers us something different. Unless injury strikes, I would be very surprised if Woods and Wildig ever start together in a 2 man midfield.

Not just on here, but I get the impression from speaking to supporters generally, that they automatically think that the new midfielders are better than Woods or Wildig. And, even having released the centre backs from last season, and brought in replacements, our best defender by a mile is Goldson. I would love to see a Woods/ Wildig midfield partnership, on their performances they deserve the chance to play together. Whatever happens, MM has a hell of a job on his hands with picking winning combinations and keeping those on the bench happy. If he gets that right then I can see us pushing hard for automatic promotion. And I hope he gives young Burton a chance, cos the other two keepers are struggling to bring any confidence to a embryonic back four. Interesting times ahead.

If your going on form it would be Lawrence and woods to start in CM v Wimbledon . Wesolowski hasn't impressed me . He's obviously a good player though and will come good . Mellon has got a selection headache

Woods is above Wildig in the pecking order for me at the moment, the lad is class, loves getting the ball down and is very composed. For his size he puts himself about well and shakes off a few tackles, I don't think that's an issue especially with Lawrence alongside him. The central midfield area looks stronger then anything we've had since I've been following, very pleased with it.

As Lawrence is likely to be captain, he will be the first name on the team sheet. After that a lot will depend on whether we play with 4 or 5 across midfield. I am old fashioned - I can see the value of one up front away from home, but would not be keen on that system at home.

I know what you mean Billy, seems to be the same with most fans everywhere. Remember how, a year ago, some thought Spurs' new signings made them look like potential title winners, whereas boring old Arsenal still weren't shopping? Wenger said there's no need to go spending if the squad's already good and improving - and look who qualified for the Champions' League and won the Cup, whilst their rivals found at least half their new signings couldn't get in the team! People tend to be mesmerised by shiny new things! I think we have to be patient with Halstead and Leutwiler. They haven't had a competitive game here yet and I recall that Weale looked a bit ponderous and uninspiring in his first pre-season here.

We have to play with 3 CM's as some talent would be wasted on the bench.
I'll be honest, if we went into the season with Wildig,Woods and McAllister it would have still been pretty strong.
Wildig and Woods are serious talents and it's a shame that one or maybe both will miss out. Both are still very young and have shown they can produce at League 1 level.
Maybe a diamond of
---------Wesolowski--------- Wildig------------------ Woods -----------Lawrence----------------

We are going to have a very strong (and disappointed) bench this year - I cannot see us having last 5 minute cameo appearances this year from the subs; we could have some real game changers waiting to come on.
Does feel strange that we have a stronger squad for L2 than we had last year - I know it looks good on paper and a ball has not yet been kicked, but I cannot see it going wrong - so glad I got money on us before the odds dropped. Still think that it is reasonable value as I can only see two teams in it this year.

Would suggest that Lawrence & Wesolowski are going to be starters regardless of the formation, these two have dropped down into L2 and regardless of wages are not going to be happy at starting on the bench. But I would have thought that Woods, Wildig and Robinson will all get their chances at some stage, particularly as Robinson & Lawrence are no way going to play every game due to fitness.
It would make sense 3-5-2 but if so your unlikely to be playing with wingers and we have a few of them. Certainly going to be interesting but at least we have plenty of options.
One thing I hope we dont see is centre midfielders being played out wide to simply accomodate them in the team

Any further clues from last night?

Any further clues from last night? Lawrence was captain last night Paul and he talked well throughout the game and was very industrious and creative. He had one dipping free-kick that just cleared the bar. I think the armband is his and he will definitely start in the middle.
Woods again had another good performance and if there is any doubts over Weslowski's fitness next week will start alongside LL I'm sure. If Weslowski is fit it will be interesting to see how MM calls it. Neither deserve to be left out from what I have seen of them in pre season. It may be that both are included if we go 5 across the middle at AFC Wimbledon.
The keeper and back 4 will I'm sure be as last night. Grandison gave his best two performances since injury in my opinion against Watford and Kilmarnock as right back. At that time he was my right back with Ellis and Goldson centre-backs and NKP left back after a good showing against Killie.
However, Grando was woeful at Kiddy as centre-half, and he didn't show much in his 15 minute cameo at right-back last night either, whereas Gayle has given assured performances both the last two games playing right-back and will, I'm sure, get the nod now.
It was interesting to see Clarke start out right last night. The lad has really impressed me, but so has Caton and he would be my starting right winger. The only other position apart from centre-mid where I'm really not sure which way Micky Mellon will call it. Out left it looks like it will be Ashley Vincent.
Up front, if we go with two it will be Collo and Vernon or if we go 4-5-1 it will be Collo on his own. The fact we went 4-4-2 last night makes me think that is how we will line up at Wimbledon. Perhaps thoug we went that way as Weso wasn't fit? But then we could have done 4-5-1 last night with Clarke in the hole and Caton out wide.
Blimey! All these options - who would have thought it!!!

Interesting 2 halves last night. First half and both teams looked to play it on the floor as much as possible. Woods and Gayle seemed to figure prominantly with the ball & Lawrence is certainly our leader on the pitch. I was also impressed with Jordan Clark who got himself into the box a number of times and could have scored had it not been for an excellent one handed save by their keeper. Second half and Alty brought on a really big lad up front (no number on his shirt). I think it was Kyle Perry? Anyhow they started playing more direct and I would say that as a result it was much more of a sterner test for us second half, especially for our central defence. Alty made 5 changes in one go and we immediately scored to take the lead! The home supporters next to me were telling me that Damian Reeves had been in good pre season form (scored something like 7 in 5 PSFs) so it was interesting to see how he would perform against us. Did ok, I wonder if he will step up to the football league one day?
