That was the first friendly I have been to this year (in fact it's the first I have been to for years) More positives than negatives for me. I liked the way that the team is trying to play. I like the fact that Liam Lawrence is one of our players, I think I am really going to enjoy watching him play this season. I like the look of James Collins, he looked hungry, wanted the ball all the time, kept making decent runs and enjoyed scoring, even though it was only a friendly. I liked the way that we kept the ball at times and waited to try and make the killer pass, it didn't always come off but it was good to see. I didn't enjoy seeing our keeper flapping at crosses or Jermaine looking a yard off the pace. I also thought it strange to see a home team in a friendly defending deep for the last 55 minutes and trying to beat us on the break, quite odd really.

We were sat in the seats at the side of the pitch so had a clear view of Grandison and we questioned wheather he was right before his mistake. He was dripping sweat from his face almost from the off and looked quite static.. Odd, not how he looked in earlier friendlies at all. A real shame.

I see the excellent sloppy star have the Kiddy goal down as a mistake by Cameron Gayle!!!! Were they actually there I wonder?

At least they picked a player who was actually on the field when they could have taken a stab at anyone in the squad really

My first friendly this pre season
I felt first we didn't know know how to play the formation. We had 5 in midfield and no width. Seemed to have an over reliance to give the ball too Lawrence or Robinson and assume something would happen. Grandison never looked comfortable from the off. Collins looks slimmer, learner and more mobile, a lot hungrier for the ball and some good off the ball runs. Knight P impressed me as did our new left back. Concerned how often the keeper punched when one or two I felt he could of caught. Having said that I won't judge just yet as he never had much to do save wise. We looked better once Woods came on. A much improved second half where you didn't want it to end as you felt the second goal was coming. Lovely chest down by Vincent for the goal. You can tell already Lawrence is too good for this level, we've done well to bag him.

First half was pretty poor, no cohesion, slow tempo and too many basic mistakes. Grandison was way off the pace and made too many errors. Kidderminsters goal was because GRandison was caught in two minds, chose the wrong option, and presented their player with a free run towards goal. As EX KEeper said, he should have cleared the ball into the stands and let us regroup. Second half our tempo increased, we played much better, moved the ball a lot quicker and it was only a matter of time before we scored.
On the plus side, KNight -Percival did well, especially alongside GOldson when he came on second half. Woods and Wildig played well, as did Caton. I like the look of Mangan who looks sharp, but Collins needs some-one alongside him . One worrying point is the keeper. Does,nt fill me with confidence, punches(poorly) when he can catch the ball, and his kicking is awful. At this stage I think the keeper who has shown the best is young Burton, but will MM have the guts to play him as first choice, over Halstead and Luetwiler?
Most do better, the Wimbledon game will be a wake up call.

Shame because he's blown an opportunity to play in the position he's best equipped for. Having seen several friendlies it's the keeper situation that gives me the most concern.

Dissapointing first half but still created a couple of chances, played some great football in the second half and deserved to win it really. Goalkeeping situation worries me the most, hopefully with a solid run in the team one of the 'keeper will build up the confidence and experience to prove me wrong. One thing I noticed last night was the urgency and desire to win the game, wanting to take free kicks early and get on with the game, they weren't happy with 1-1 even in a friendly.
Oh also I thought Mangan looked very lively when he came on, definately will offer us something this season.

Mixed feelings about the keepe. Wasn't it Leutwiler that made that mistake in the first friendly where he ran out to the corner of his area only to be caught out by the attacker. Yet he seems to be MMs favoured keeper.

Yet he seems to be MMs favoured keeper. Must admit I've got the same concerns, doesn't like coming for the ball, punches when you expect him to catch and stays on his line at corners. The number of times the ball went over his head at corners, and with players coming in at the far post. Could cost us a few goals this season as the opposition will have him sussed as our achillies heel

Leutwiler not guaranteed as starter against Wimbledon. Halstead had a slight hamstring pull but should be available for Friday.Burton is too young and totally inexperienced to give the starting berth to, although with a loan move and some competetive games under his belt, his time will no doubt come. He has plenty of time to develop, so why rush him, when some bad results and performances at his young age, could set him back and damage him. I say again and only in my opinion, Halstead looks the most assured of the three, and actually catches crosses as opposed to punching away. From what i have seen, he looks to be a decent organiser too, so he gets the nod from me

Agree about the slight concerns on our Swiss keeper not a fan of this continental style punching either, but its July and you got to the give lad some bedding in time as he wont be used to much 1st team football recently, also remember what a rusty keeper Weale looked early doors at the Meadow the game at Leeds where he looked very poor but he turned out to be the best stopper we had since Oggy n Wardle... Lawrence n Robbo look a class above on the ball always tell a good player on seeing gow much time they seem to have on the ball. Sure Leitwiuler will get better and what a exciting season we are in for.............

Burton was classed by the same coach as Hart had, to be better than Hart at age comparrison (admitidly this was 2 years ago), Spoke long and hard to Dave Hughes about this, so really if he is good enough, he is old enough.

I don't mibd punching out by a keeper, I remember people complaining about Joe Hart doing it, but if done well then it provides a goog start to a counter attack.

In general, you have a point about age being inconsequential. However, MM would not have brought in 2 GK's if he had any intention of blooding young Burton as a first team starter. He would have known about his undoubted talents before signing the other two, which suggests to me that a loan move away would be on the cards, so he can learn his trade without the spotlight or pressure being on him as a homegrown talent. If he gets the nod, then he gets my full support, but that applies to whoever starts and whatever position they play in
