Don't think you can count The Esmond Betton Band. They used to play around our neck of the woods. They were dressed very smartly, with blazers with "EB" on the left breast. They used to play the local halls. The one venue was a building attached to a pub, with a room above a hen house. They were really strictly Waltz, Quickstep and Foxtrot merchants who were in their last throes. There was no singer, although there was a mic for Esmond to solemnly announce, "And now, a Quickstep". He didn't actually play an instrument himself, but occasionally stood in front of the band conducting.
The music style was changing, and The Twist was coming in. The younger element used to shout, "What about a twist". Now the EB Band hadn't got one, but they produced one tune which had to do. Never heard it before or since. It was certainly nothing Chubby Checker ever recorded.
Chubby who? This fella.

Any road up, when they played it, the room was bouncing, accompanied by a hundred madly flapping clucking hens underneath them. I used to dress to impress in those days. I had a pink top with black waistcoat, tight black jeans and beat boots. Beat what?
These.

I had my hair brushed back at the sides, with a big comb hanging down to my nose at the front. I must have looked great, because I only had to walk in the room and the girls would scream.
As Esmond seems to be out, the first real star I saw performing live, was Lulu.
Yours?

Sooty & Sweep in a Theater early 80's cannot remember where. Oddest was the ''Godfather of soul'' James Brown at V99 Weston Park I hadn't realised who he was untill the familiar songs started it's looking at the line-up it's probably the best V has ever had yet he still stood out. I have since realised how big he was.

Slightly off thread but did anyone watch the Edinburgh Castle concert on BBC1 last night?
I thought the finale performance of music by John Miles was brilliant...I havn't heard that song for years.

Sadly, Take That. Didn't see them perform (thankfully), but played football with them when they performed for the girls one lunchtime at school!

Before the Beatles became huge stars they were on the circuit of dance halls with other Liverpool groups and I saw them at a Friday night hop at the Music Hall in the early 1960's.
I didn't really rate them but my mate did and dragged me along to talk to them, all I can remember is him asking John Lennon where the bass player had gone and John replying, "Paul's off for a ".

Any idea which toilet it was? He must be due out soon.
I'll go and get his autograph, I've got some disposable gloves to wear, just in case he hasn't washed his hands.
