ITS ONLY a pre season friendly but comfortably beating a team that's just got promoted to a higher division is a good sign.

Really enjoyable game, prob the weakest player today was Vincent, but early doors yet! Also more impressive as this was apparently Chesterfields third PSF already!!

Thought the new LB struggled a bit, but still early doors.

Great game to get things started,Collins finish was class and the second goal was decent. As for the players they all did well apart from grandison,he is not a right back and it showed today. Please Mickey please sign up Robinson and Asante they were class.

Poor first half for me. Goldson out of position and looked lost. Only Collins, Wesolowski, Leutwiler and Demetriou impressed me. Looked a bit shakey defensively with Ellis, Grandison giving the ball away and lucky not to get punished. Vincent and Vernon were just not in the game. Caton did o.k a couple of times but needs to improve his crossing. Knight-Percival did the basics o.k. Second half a lot better with Goldson back to centre half. Robinson looked good but just wonder if he still has the legs over 90 mins. Lawrence was solid, Akpa Akpro and Asante were a handful with there pace but just wonder if they will score enough goals, so for me we still need another striker to partner Collins. Clarke looked lively when he came on. All in all we did o.k for the first game but obviously still need to improve in certain areas.

Very encouraging. Results mean nothing in friendlies but for a club that had got used to losing under GT and MJ, any opportunities to quickly reverse the habit are most welcome. Attacking wise we showed lots of promise: I was worried Collins may not be fit but he looked really sharp. Gayle also impressed me and Caton reminded me of Marc Pugh: he will offer little defensively but could be a gem going forward. Lawrence didn't shine but looked class if that makes sense. At the right price, Robinson would be the best signing of all of them... he instantly stood out.
It's early days with Mellon but I'm impressed with how he's gone about things so far.

What happened to Wildig and Woods? Woods is ill and Wildig has a slight quad problem so wouldn't be risked.

For once Paul we agree a very impressive performance, nice to see Caton and Vincent receiving the ball it the Chesterfield half rather than Taylor having to fetch it from our penalty area. The performance of Andy Robinson, took me back 25 years to watching Tony Kelly, maybe we can get the rules changed to something like American Football where Robinson can come on to take corners.

Thanks thought Robinson was class when he came on, great one touch volley passes and set pieces perhaps not for 90 mins but looked fitter than I thought he would be and reads the game really well and could help the younger players I'm sure

I thought Vernon had a very decent half. Held the ball up well and showed a good touch. Looks like a promising partnership with Collins (excellent). I thought Caton and Vincent did well, also. Wesolowski-outstanding. The defence was worrying first half, particularly Ellis. Better in 2nd half with Goldson moved back. Clarke looked promising and Curran got into threatening positions. Lawrence looked rather rusty. Not convinced about Robinson. Maybe a luxury which we cannot afford. Good delivery but a rash tackler now lacking in pace. Not convinced by either Asanti or Akpe Akpro. Got into good positions but didn't really threaten.

Encouraging that they scored twice without response.

Think, Dave McAllister was starting (for a bit) when we got promoted, now he will probably be about 6th choice CM!

wesolowski looks top player Collins looked good robinson coming on in the second half shows what he could still do, remember its div 2 and he can do a job- his delivery and seeing a pass was great to see Ellis will be solid at the back once he gets used to his partner - but who will it be? Demetriou looks potentially great - great cross for Collins - still room to improve
I enjoyed it and think we could do well.

Plus we have 2 good wingers and will sign atleast one on trial

Caton looked good first half.
You must be Miss Taken. Not the James Caton who came on as a sub for Chester, scored, and the Chester fan said was rubbish!
Apart from Collins he was Skrill sorry brill. only played 45mins could be a right find. Well done CE for this.

Looked good to me.
Of the triallists, if the terms are right I would offer Robinson a contract right now. I don't think partnering Asante with Akpa Akpro did either any favours - would like to see MM mix and match the strikers on Tuesday night.

Did Robinson play in the the middle? And how did Smith and Burton the youngsters, perform? Robison seemed to have a free role, don't know if that was planned though lol. Both youngsters looked comfortable, very good prospects.

Robinson seemed to be in a free role. But did sit just in from the wing with Asante outside of him which led to a few interesting plays.

It's interesting reading Chesterfield manager Paul Cook's post-match comments, and also from some of their fans on Facebook, that they seem to be having similar problems re: recruitment and particularly around signing a striker that we had during our two seasons in League One.

Pay them enough and they will come. It's as simple as that really.
Based on our woes from last season I would say that splashing the cash on two proven strikers at League 1 level is one of the key things that you need to keep you in the division
If you haven't got the money to do that then it's going to be a very tough season. There's always Tom Eaves out there I suppose.

Going over old ground I know, but perhaps easier said than done unless you have somebody still under contract who can make the step up such as a Nahki Wells or Tom Pope? Mediocre forwards are ten a penny, but I guess when we talk about a proven striker we are talking about someone who can score at least 15 goals in a season, but only 13 players in League One exceeded that last season.

Quite pleased all in all . Robinson was impressive though I agree with those who say he probably wouldn't last a full 90 mins. At least he looked comfortable on the ball , whipped in some good crosses and tried to control the game . An intelligent player no doubt . Collins looked class to me , he too seemed very comfortable and his control and passing was better than I remembered . He has the look of someone who has played at a higher level . Grandison didn't look good at full back I have to say.
Early days but I am quietly confident, looking at our squad on display, that we have the potential to do really well this season , dare I say it , promotion is a real possibility.
I was going to comment on last season and why we couldn't get in decent players instead of the s**te that we ended up with but I cannot be arsed .
Last season has gone , a new Manager and squad are in place and I am more enthused by what our new Manager has done than I could imagine . The future looks bright for a change - I hope things continue to improve .

I can definitely see a midfield of Caton, Lawrence, Wesolowski, Vincent Would there be much point in signing these guys if you wouldn't even play them in the first eleven Strangely enough Woods and Wildig showed enough class to ply their trade in L1 nevermind not even make the bench for a L2 side.

Guess you haven't moved on from the Turner Era Mark where we regularly had difficulty filling the bench. Last seasons problems were not only a lack of quality but also a lack of quantity. Personally I'll be delighted to see a squad where every player has to fight / perform to be in the team, surely there is nothing worse than 11 players who know their place is safe until the next loanee comes in.
