111 runs in 29 overs today, should look to score about that rate if not slightly more (4.5 an over should be really be the goal). In 45 more overs we'll be on about 550 or so ideally and then we can declare and have 12-15 overs at them tonight. Not a bad little prediction! Big wicket overnight, now we must be patient and keep taking wickets and hopefully have 7+ down by the close. They can score 300 and it's no problem, we bat again and slog 200 in 50 overs and then give ourselves 160 overs at them and boom boom it's 1-1!

If we have them 7 down by close there will only be a minimum 180 overs left in the game. 180 minus however many overs needed to get the last three, minus 50 overs to slog 200 means we'd have a lot less than 160 overs to bowl them out again.

It's okay I just added a 6th day

Chris Read has been one of the if not the best English glovemen in the last 10 years or so. He is no mug with the bat either and in the championship this season is averaging a decent 45 with the bat, a better average than Buttler & Foster at the moment. I however expect England to respond to the clamour and pick Joss Buttler to replace Prior, even though Buttler is very much work in progress when it comes to his keeping. Makes sense to play Buttler imho. Sure he's a work in progress, but he's a long term prospect. Read would only be considered an interim keeper because of his age. Good for Buttler to gain high-level experience with a view towards the world cup and ashes next year. And he can't do any worse than Prior has this summer. I take it all back!!!! Welcome to test cricket Jos Buttler, brilliant 85 from 83 balls.

Amazing how many lives we got. Cook, Bell and Buttler all should have gone at least once before they put on significant totals, but a combination of poor umpiring and fielding means we gained about 300 runs from them that we shouldn't have. Suggests that there's still enough in the pitch.
Good knock from Buttler, made the most of his luck. Still, we know he's a good limited overs batter - basically what he did - and we'll have to see him keep as well as batting amidst inevitable collapses yet which won't suit him quite so well. Nonetheless, excellent start for him and at 23 still loads of time to improve.

India looking comfortable at the moment, we could do with a breakthrough soon before the new ball goes off.

Some poor umpiring in this test that's for sure!

What would we do without Jimmy Anderson?
He's bowled superbly so far in this test.

Jimmy is making some cricket writers/commentators/experts eat their words when they suggested he was past his best... I'd argue he's bowling better than ever right now at times. Even if he's had the odd poor day, I'd suggest that was due to overuse as our backup seamers have gone down since Tremlett, Bresnan and Finn were firing a few years back.
Broad was a bit hit and miss today but it's good to see him come back with good figures and Ali seems to be improving with each spell he bowls. He was very unlucky not to get 3 wickets today. Woakes has bowled well and been ever so unlucky whilst Jordan seems to have the 'yips'.
We've got 176/8 overs left by my calculations so hopefully we can bowl them out quickly tomorrow and consider enforcing the follow on IF our bowlers feel refreshed enough. Otherwise if we do bat we need to declare and give ourselves at least 120 overs to bowl them out (a good 30 overs with the 2nd new ball too). Tomorrow morning is crucial.

Another 5 wicket haul for Jimmy Anderson, a great bowling performance.
England to bat again. Strange decision 20 minutes into the morning with the bowlers fresh but hey ho, how often do teams enforce the follow on at test level nowadays? not very often I would guess.

Ball is doing all sorts. I'd have bowled again personally. Could have opened up with Woakes and Broad and brought Jimmy on as first change if they're worried he's tired. I fear another 1st test against Sri Lanka where we dither along and waste valuable time. I hope I'm wrong as the score moves onto 23-1...

Strange decision. They are going to need to really crack on with the scoring and get India back in again before too much of today is gone. They do seem to be starting to hit it hard already though.

5 boundaries in 3 overs and things look nice and rosey again. I'm gonna predict will be about 85 not out and declare with us on about 220. It'll be such a great move showing he's all about the team and not personal gain. Even Warney would applaud it!

The standard of umpiring in this test match is poor, how Gary Ballance was given out is beyond me!
Oh for DRS!!!
Feel for Sam Robson, out to an excellent delivery but he'll be feeling under pressure come the next test. He's been getting starts before getting out.

Couldn't agree more, Erasmus that time but Rod Tucker has had a shocker at the other end, Sure,England have had a few let offs too but in this series it feels India have benefited far more from these poor decisions than England, not that I want bad decisions given but given India's refusal to allow DRS then its only fair that they get the bulk of the poor decisions, that's the only thing that will make the Indian cricket board get with the times.

Lead is nearly 400. Middle order batting nice and positive and using cook as an anchor. Time for cook to go for it and get the lead to 450 and maybe even declare before tea. Pitch is doing all sorts. Moeen Ali, Joe Root and hell even Gary Ballance will be licking their lips.

England win the 3rd test by 266 runs.
After a poor summer so far that was a superb performance by England, suddenly so many positives but to me it was down to Cook, Bell & Anderson of the old school finally showing their true class.
Hats off too to Moeen Ali, 6-67 in the 2nd innings and 8 wickets in the match.

Cracking win. Typical lack of comments in this thread when we do well haha Great news about Jimmy. Absolutely brilliant to see someone standing up to the BCCI. My dislike for Dhoni grows by the day. England should win 3-1 now, the Indians are rattled!

So much to dislike about Dhoni and the BCCI, not least their refusal to give interviews to the BBC (or indeed anyone other than Sky/Starsports).

Yup. Agree with Aggers - can understand if they don't like the predictive element, but why not at least allow it for catches and LBW up to point of impact?

Bit of a mini recovery from India at the moment...would be great if we could bowl them out for less than 200 on day 1. Need some more Jimmy magic to brak this stand.

The issue is only England can turn 8 - 4 into a +300 score by not being able to deal with middle and bottom order. lmost definate if that was Eng batting we would be all out by now or pretty close

Time for some positive intent and who knows we might be very close to their score by the close.
