After the dismal showing down under last summer, England look to start the rebuilding process starting with the opening test against Sri Lanka today.
As expected England award new caps to Robson, Ali & Jordan.
Gary Ballance will bat at three, strange decision? in what looks on paper as a strong if inexperienced batting line up.
England batting first...oops not made the best of starts, debutant Robson out for 1.

Sure has begun, New Era according to all and sundry in the media, Sri Lanka obviously not read the papers this week.

POOR technique by both openers.
A lot now resting on Bell's shoulders to steady the ship and build some partnerships.

Oh here we go again! Mr Japan Shrew don't turn on the TV! At least we have signed people for STFC that can take our mind of the cricket!

Great knock from Moeen on debut, such a shame he couldn't get the 50 but demonstrated his ability to get runs at this level, hopefully the first of many. Not convinced by Prior, early lbw shout against him and very lucky to survive on review, given we're trying to move into a new era and create a new test team I would've thought we'd move on to Buttler or Bairstow. Interesting to go with Ballance at 3, Yorkshire believe he's best at five, need someone to make that number 3 spot their own, Mo plays there for Worcestershire so maybe he can be moved up the order in the future.
Rooty going well, hopefully Prior sticks around long enough to build a partnership.

Edging towards a recovery with some decent runs left in the order still. Good for Root to get some much needed runs, too.

Will be interesting to see how our bowlers fair on this wicket, from my armchair it looks a good wicket. Well, it is lords so should be pretty good!

Might have to, very happily, eat my words regarding Prior, about to get his 50(hope I haven't jinxed him) hopefully this is him coming back into form.
New ball just taken.

Happy to see Prior back and batting well!
56 not out!
He's never going to set the field alight, but he's just what we need right now!

Form is temporary. Class is permanent. Prior is world class and justified his selection. Welcome back and well done ps piers Morgan you're a twit x

Good fightback from England, 2 players performing well on their come back, Root & Prior. I hope that they can carry on the good work tomorrow.
Poor show by the visitors, only bowling 89 overs in the day...

Sri Lanka must have the weakest attack of any of the top 8 test playing nations.

ps piers Morgan you're a twit x Change the i to an a and you've got it. Surely you didn't need the Prior business to confirm that blindingly obvious fact. Personally I'd add a few other adjectives first, loathsome for example. Personally delighted to see Prior back in form. He's been a vital talisman during the good years. Also it gives Buttler time to develop his keeping in the short forms. Now we really need Cook to find his mojo - can't always be relying on the middle-order.

I watched it (Starsports on the iPad, unfortunately no cricket on TV here) up to when Root and Ali were going comfortably. Test matches late at night and World Cup matches in the middle of the night or crack of dawn - I'm going to be a wreck come July. Proper burning the candle at both ends!

First time England have scored over 500 in a test match since December 2012.
Mind you, this Sri Lanka attack is not exactly threatening is it....such a contrast to what England faced down under last winter.

Well done Joe Root, splendid double century very ably supported by the tail. Good to see all the Sri Lankans running over to shake his hand as they left the field too.

Early escape for the Sri Lankan's, a good review by them leaves it 6-0

Well batted Mr Root! My highest ever score in cricket was 87 and that felt amazing, I can't imagine how elated he must be feeling right now!
Just need the bowlers to do a job now and job done!

England need 350 runs to win the 2nd and deciding test against Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka have fought back really well, excellent knock by Angelo Mathhews.
I wouldn't fancy being an England opener, out of form captain Cook is going to be under a hell of a lot of pressure.
One tough evening session to come for England.
