Lets face facts, he's not the next Des Walker as someone who should know better claimed in the press on sunday

He's ok. Top half Championship/bottom Premier League player at best.

Des Walker at his peak was special. What did the Italians do to him?

A very capable player IMO. Under SAF's management he'll probably progress to be one of the best defenders in The Premiership in a few years time.
As said above, he's WIP, but due to Rio's injury he's been thrown into it this season. That's probably not a bad thing for his development.

Based on what I've seen this year, there's a few decent English defenders coming through, Smalling, Martin Kelly, Phil Jones, Kyle Walker...

Don't knock the lad, this is his first season in the Prem/Europe and for me he's done o.k. Can see him being a future international . Not often A.F. makes a mistake ( the barsteward).

Not often A.F. makes a mistake Does that mean we can expect to see Bebe soon Smalling mentioned three times second half 1) Almost shinned an open goal wide but was offside 2) Studdied Raul up the back of his shin 3) "got in the way" of a shot He's not all that

He's ok. Top half Championship/bottom Premier League player at best. Absolutely. His brother Chris is a bit better. Just played in a team that won 6-1 in their European Cup semi final.

Bit early to make judgement. He's only broken into the first team within the last year, looks decent. Next season could be defining for him.

He's looked great in most of his apps for united this season.

Well he's already made good progress and is already ahead of Evans in the pecking order. He will turn out to be a bargain just like fellow defenders Vidic (£7m) and Evra (£5.5m) don't know what Rafael cost but in a few years time when Smalling replaces Ferdinand it'll be a world class defence which was built by spending virtually a pittance. Smalling will be a regular in the England squad in a few years as well. And Man City bought Lescott for £24million Edit: Rafael cost £2.6m Rafael - £2.6 million Vidic - £7 million Smalling - £8 million Evra - £5.5 million A world class defence bought for £23.1 million.

The lad was playing for maidstone 2 and a half years ago, fair play to him for making such an adjustment to topflight football in such a small space of time.
As much as people want to hate him because he plays for united, he will most likely be Englands leading centre half in the next 5 years.

Easily one of the best young defenders in the Premier League and the experience he's getting now makes him an outstanding prospect.

Ah yes, against the world-beaters Schalke. The side who only made it to this stage due to playing an Italian side who lost the one thing from last season that made them a force in Europe - their manager. Vidic was a bargain at £7m mind

I am a part time united supporter and have to say i think he has been a major surprise this year. Judging on last years games at Fulham i thought he was going to be a liability, having the odd game the league cup then shipped out in a few seasons time. But on the whole he has been excellent. Calm on ball, tall, quick, good distribution and good in the air. He has had a few lapses but that is expected, he was playing for Maidstone a few years ago. And he is now definitely the no3 choice centre back at utd.

He was integral in West Ham sticking 4 up Man Utd on the 30th November. But I seem to recall you referring to him and his team mates as "the stiffs" on that occasion
