So basically he had been dropped from the 25 man squad and decided that was it.

In Rafael, United have found a right back with the quality to replace Neville. In Glen Johnson, England haven't.
Be interesting to see if he tries management. He could well be a very good one.

I'll probably get some stick from the 'Mancs' for this one, but ive never rated him as a player that much. Average at best. As for a person, he's the most horrid vile human being ever to put on an England strip.

Goodluck to the bloke he has worked hard for years to be at the top of the game. He has done well to keep himself out of the press unlike most modern day players.

From reading a interview with Fergie in one Sunday paper, he will make a very good football agent as does a lot of contract negotiations for the youngsters. Im not sure why but theres something dis-likeable about the lad, perhaps his general moody exterior and almost comes across as representing Fergie on the pitch. Im sure though that Utd fans love him. However by all accounts hes a model pro and is also a man of principle who will stand up for his beliefs. And I must admit that I felt a lot more confident with him at England right back, than Glen Johnson Probably a good decision to see him call it a day as nothing worse than seeing a player embarrasing himself by playing on when he's past it, Darren Moore take note.

I'm not a Man Utd fan by any means, but to be fair, Neville has been a model professional, conducted himself in an exemplary manner, and is a rarity in this day and age in only playing for one club. Never rated him as an England fullback, but acknowledged that we sure as hell missed him when he was not there. Tended to get , maybe, a little too involved in the politics of the sport and certainly seemed to have a lot to say for himself on occassions. But i for one wish him well for the future and applaud his contribution to the modern game.

How can you rate a player vile when you have never met or had dealings with him, or how can you compare him with every other English international player many of whom had finished their career before you were born ? (If you have had dealings directly and have genuine reasons to dislike him I apologise in advance) If not I think your post qualifies as the most stupid ever on B & A.

But this bloke, apart from the odd bits of over exuberence, has always conducted himself well, on and off the pitch. Not the greatest talent to pull on an England shirt but always gave his all.

Thought he's retired ages ago, when they played Albion quite recently he was awful and so lucky to stay on the pitch, as a youngster he was a cracking player though. I will remember though when the FA Cup was first staged at cardiff, he was quoted to say "weve booked our hotel already in December after the 3rd round draw" think they went out in the 4th round lol

he has a big choice to make now - go to tv or stay at United and coach - no idea what he will do, but I won't be surprised to see him stay at Utd in some capacity
England have really struggled to replace him as a player, but he has been past his best for a bit now, so a good decision

Absolutely detest this chap, symptomatic of all that was wrong in the game regarding respect for referee's and respecting opposition. Add to the fact he seems incapable of receiving a red card as of late (stoke etc).
That said, he gave his all to one club and won many honours. He was excellent in the 2002, 2004 and 2006 championships and it was a shame he had so many injuries towards the end of his career. Possibly England's best right back ever?

i'd forgotton he existed seems like he retired a couple of years back
a lot of fans hated him because he winds up the opposition
the kind of thing that make a player a hero to his own fans and it makes everyone else bitter as proved on here time after time

Loved it when he wound up the Liverpool fans that one year and got fined. You could see the passion he had for United and hatred for Liverpool that day.

Always toed the party line.SAF's puppet brimming full of obsequiousness. Hope he ends up on ITV to go with their other "say lots with no content" pundits where he will undoubtedly carry on his Man Utd boot licking.

In my humble opinion it is always a terribly sad day for english football when someone with such an enthusiastic and consistant loathing of Liverpool Football club and the arrogant, patronising s**ts that support them retires from our game.
Good luck to him.

Can’t say I ever rated him for England. But that could be because he were steady and just got the job done, nothing too fancy. Maybe folk didn't appreciate what he did as it wasn't stand out. Not sure. At times I did think him a liability though.
Do agree with the comments about his behavior on the pitch at times. But let's be honest, he isn’t the only one who comes across like that. It's just synonymous with the game...

A lad who was in the United squad in the early days of the Nevilles, Scholes etc used to say that Gary could never keep a girlfriend because he was so dedicated to training and playing that he was in bed (alone) early every night during the season and would not go out clubbing.

A model pro.
One of the 'one-man clubs' as per several in the Fergie regime, something I respect and is seemingly lacking in the modern game.
Questionable facial hair.

Very, very easy to do if you are picked up and kept at one of the top clubs in England our kid. Can't say it stands out for me that. You think he would be a one club man if he would have started out at Albion, Brum? No, of course he wouldn't have. Sure he has never been short of a few bob playing for Manchester... Credit where credit is due but that is toooo easy...

I believe that Neville is the type of player who every fan of the team he plays for - whoever that might be - will love him. I defy anyone to say that, if he was at their club and showed the same comittment and loyalty, they wouldn't admire him greatly
