Considering and especially at home i think vocally we are very poor supporters considering the size of the crowds we get. We need to up our game so the players respond with a bit of passion. I think generally we need to up our game as fans if we are to reap the awards of success. When we have got vocal and really got behind the team at home versus Bradford, Hereford and even Chesterfield the team have performed. When its been quiet against Crewe, Morecome and away at such places recently Oxford, Burton, Bury etc we haven't performed. Its works in order ying and yang. When we have been exceptionally vocal pre match 9/10 we have won. Memorable recent matches like at MK Dons, Bury, Dagenham, Notts County, Stoke and even at Vale we have performed well. We need to be onside with the team and not offside. It wasn't until we perked up and went down the front with encouragement at Bury we started to play better, the same happened at Accrington also. At Oxford nobody bothered so the team didn't bother.
On Tuesday night lets all make the effort to support the team not just go to watch the game and sit there like zombies moaning becuase they aint performing. I have said this before and will say it again we need to be more vocal and really get behiond the team from the off right around the ground.

How about the team give us something to sing about?
Why do I wanna sing to a team playing poorly?
Can't those players who earn thousands a week to kick a ball not play football without people they don't know singing to them?

We certainly dont help ourselves by the current expectations. New ground, bigger attendances, bigger budgets therefore we must get promotion. What it's actually given rise to is a revolving door of managers, each one under enormous pressure to succeed, each one determined to buy his own players at the expense of some decent ones that the previous regime already had.
I would like to see a few years of stability manager and ergo ;)player wise. As long as he doesnt ever put us in danger of relegation I would like to see GT given the full 3 years of his contract and see what happens even if we have 1 or 2 mid table seasons.

Everyone at the club from players, management to the board have talked about promotion since the ground move so its hardly surprising the fans expect it. Even last week Matt Sadler was talking about catching Chesterfield Ive always said that if the people at the club talk about promotion then they cant be surprised if the fans are unhappy when it isnt achieved. As for the original post, firstly Id agree that the fans dont get behind the players anywhere near enough and sadly that has been the case since I started following Shrewsbury in the late 80's. But to suggest we are in anyway to blame for the current performances and results is ridiculous.

Agreed, swapping the riverside for the west stand is like swapping the cosy old fashioned local you've been drinking in with your mates for years for the wine bar where you know you must 'behave' to fit in with the clientele.

That's a good analogy, but in equal respect, the wine bar has a great view of the telly, you can always find a seat, it's not going to be boarded up and best of all, it doesn't stink of p**s.

Is it only me who thinks that the Atmosphere at the new ground, on the whole is quite good. It's good in 18. Not as good as The Riverside (although that had many, many flat spots too), but still good and getting better. The atmosphere will get better with more success. The fans are always the 12th man but it's the 11 on the pitch that are really going to change the atmosphere.

True, but over the last year or so, the singing section which is blocks 18 and 19,seem to be stretching further down the west stand, which is great news. The match vs Hereford had block's 18 and 19 all standing, and a great majority of 17 too.

The problem is we only seem up for it it when we play in biggish games this season Hereford, Chesterfield, Charlton and Bradford in which we played really well. We might have beaten other teams in some games Rotherham, Lincoln and Northampton but the crowd was flat and the players didn't really perform to the levels they could. At home to Crewe which was surprising considering where we were at the time, the crowd from the begining didn't even turn up against Crewe it was like we were exepcting to win and that there was no point singing until we score. We need to get a buzz around the place so that the players feel a good vibe and respond. We won't win them all, we will loose some but as long as they feel appreciated by us they will try i'm sure. I get the feeling the doldrums start to appear and then they loose interest, most players will tell you they will perform to a crowd willing them on. To many people at STFC expect us to win but wont sing at all until we a re winning or there is a big prize on offer.
No we need to get a buzz back in the ground, get people singing from the off. Wonder why Accy are still in this league? At home they are non stop singing, it may be a small crowd, there may be only 1,500 there but the players you can see play there hearts out for them. They certainly don't have the quality we possess and thats a fact, but you can see the team plays with passion and performs possibly above what it should do. I think since we have been at this new ground the team we have had has definately performed below par and thats quite possibly because of us and expectation. You think of who we have had here as players and where they are now? I think it really is us the fans that is partly to blame.
I sit in block 19 and its ok, but it would be so much better if we were in one end of the ground firing the noise out. We spend far too much time bantering with the opposition. If you know anything about negativity and feng shui you will know also i'm right that 18 and 19 is the wrong place for the noise to come from. 15 16 and 17 would be ideal for the noise to come from as would blocks 9 10 and 11. The club made a big boo boo before we moved to the ground and we ended up singing in the worse place possible.
After going to Oxford and yes they beat us 3-1, but there home end behind the goal was completely singing vitually non stop apart from our spell when we score for about 10 minutes. The noise from that end was very loud and very impressive. 6,200 odd at the game and there is NO WAY ON THIS PLANET we have EVER been as loud as that even when we have had 7-8,000 at home. The reason for this is there are still too many people scattered around the ground that would sing but won't move into the corner. Why are we singing in a corner? You go to most grounds you get put in a corner down one side unless you in League 2 where is makes sense to put away fans behind a goal.
We need a stand that will sing not just a couple of blocks.

Can anyone tell me how the atmosphere was when Town travelled to Chesterfield earlier in the season? Were the Chesterfield able to get a decent noise going?
I still think the club made an error with the new ground in not trying to attract more support into the South Stand. The away fans at Oteley Road show you that you don’t need that many behind the goal to make a noise and generate an atmosphere. No idea whether it were just an off day but the Crewe supporters (who were outnumbered a fair bit) really did make a load more noise than us…

The atmosphere from the home fans at Chestefield was outstanding - noisy, enthusiastic, you name it they were brilliant! Not until they scored 3 in ten minutes it wasn't. With the exception of Accrington I have yet to go anywhere in our division that is out of the ordinary. Like it or not, the football on display will always dictate the atmosphere, with the exception of " derby" games.

If the team play good attacking football and get bodies into the box then the atmosphere would be good. If we're playing rubbish fans will just sit there and be quiet. That's just how it goes owd lad.

the problem with a lot of the fans around me is that most are not season ticket holders, I see soooooooooo many tickets in peoples hands as they figure out where there seats are and other then a few of the old people around me who are a laugh the rest have no staying power.
MORE CONSISTANT FANS NEEDED
BUMBS ON SEATS
plus the only time some of them sound off is in a negative way as if that is only thing they know

i think the idea that the atmosphere was somehow better at the old meadow is something of a delusion.
yes, if you stood in the riverside by the buffett with or near the singers, the atmos was generally good, i did for many years so i know. but when you are sat the other side of the ground in the wakeman stand for example, as i did for the last 10 to 15 years at the old meadow, it was not unusual to hear a pin drop.
just like the new meadow, big grudge games brought out the best (and worst) in the crowd.
yes the old ground felt more homely, mainly because it was our home for so long.
OTT, just to reverse your logic, you suggest that the crowd played a big part in the teams success against bradford, hereford and chesterfield, im sure to a degree your right, could i also suggest that the opposite is equally as possible, that the fact the team played some good football that brought the best out of the crowd and gave us all something to get excited and shout about.

i think the idea that the atmosphere was somehow better at the old meadow is something of a delusion. Agree. I also think that more people at the NM tend to join in; I'm thinking blocks 18/19 and occasionally 17 along with the Salop Leisure. Whereas at the old GM it was the hardcore handful to the left of the buffet.

The atmosphere at Chesterfield from start to finish was red hot, especially at the opposite end, it was very load just liek oxford with the whole stand singing. Since we have moved to Greenhous meadow just when have we had a whole stand singing? I recall blocks 8 and 9 singing int he south when the ultras were in there and I can say bare maximum of partially block 17, with the whole of 18 and 19 singing int he West stand, now that is 5 blocks virtually of which there are in the south stand, the club made a mistake not making this end the singing stand IMO. The club also could have continued the trend by having block 16 as a singing block and the other singers would have been built around it as it would have been more central and more acoustically correct, but no they cashed in but adding a few more quid to sit there, in which nobody who would sing would ever sit there thus knocking the atmosphere on the head. Atmosphere is vital IMO and all they did was cancel it out but boxing it in a corner out of the way where the rest of the ground can't here you. I believe away fans should have been dumped in 18 and 19 out of the way in the corner with 17 netted over and a partition under the concourse. Thats what they do at bigger grounds just like southampton and stoke do.
With Old GM it was a better atmosphere becuase the singing came from a central location and this genrated a good atomosphere when the ground had 4k + in it.

chesterfield was a big game for us, and in a way, for them to, top of the table clash, bit of history between the teams fans ect so i would expect thhe atmos to be a bit better.
i do however take your point about where the singers are, the accoustics arnt great when you are all down in a corner.

I;d really like the club to give this a try if just for one season, as an experiment and put away fans in 18 and 19 boxed in a corner. Give the 2 ends to home fans except when we are expecting a huge following where in theory you could give the north stand plus 17 18 and 19 to away fans. Yes we would need to make a partition in the West stand like they got at stoke and southampton. If we go up a league with bigger away followings we would need to do this anyway. stick away fans in the corner a d lets have 2 home ends like most clubs have these days in the higher leagues. Heck then if you want banter with away fans then make the home end the north stand, this way it would be so much easier for home fans to use the powerleague bar before and after the match. The atmosphere would be so much better for us the home team having a whole stand to sing from. Away fans would still be close by for banter. If you did this away allocation would be 1,224 which is more than enough for virtually every team thats been here since it opened with the exception of Hereford in 2008. Block 19 holds 450 with 18 holding 504 and just over half of 17 in line with the exit is 270. I think this would be a good move. blocks 13,14,15 and 16 can still be used by home fans. In theory i'd pump the price up an extra £1 just because its a side view like most other grounds would have.

This is how strongly i think it would benefit the club.
Two ends for the players to attack and get support when there is a corner or on the attack etc. Imagine being an away goalkeeper that has to have stick off the crowd at 2 different ends? Being in 18 and 19 would dround out away support like it does at Hereford or Lincoln. It must of worked for Notts County last year. Powerleague bar easy access no police needed to make home fans wait until the away end is is clear. During the game supporters coaches can pull around whilst the gate is open, shut the gate before the game finishes. Away fans put staright on coaches before the game finishes and no problems.
All that would be needed is a partition underneath the West stand splitting it into 2. I noticed this had been done at both Southampton and Stoke City with a steel shutter door. It would easy or simple to revert back to what it is now if needed for a one off game where 1700 odd is expected or better still can be converted to extend away capacity to 3000+ with the North Stand if ever needed. I know a few people wouldn't like this but it makes so much more sense as an advantage to our club and our fans,

All thats needed is the steel roller doors working on a partition halfway down the West stand. There are 2 serving counters and 2 sets of toilets in the West stand. It would be ideal.

I asked the question 'should the away fans be in the south stand' some time back. The poll gave an equal 16/16 split and generated some good reasoning blueandamber.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=60807&page=2Personally I wouldn't like to move away from Block 18. I love the view and the atmosphere is good. I have sat in the South Stand but didn't particularly enjoy the view there and also elsewhere where i've been in the 'end behind the goal' including Wembley. That said, anythings worth a try but at the moment I think the atmosphere is improving year on year and it's perhaps a little premature for anything radical yet. The atmosphere will undoubtedly improve with more success and more excitement on the field.
