designers are tossers. they sit on their fat arses all day doing sweet f.a. it probably took someone a couple of hours maximum to design our new logo, why else do you think they wrote that article about the bulls**t "concept" of the badge - it's to cover their backs and make you think that they actually put some effort into it. designers are con artists, they abuse the fact that they have a bit of computer knowledge on photoshop and that most other people don't, something which may look "cool" or "stylish" was probably created with a few clicks of the mouse. The FACT (and it is a fact) that they stole the image from clipart is an absoulte p**s take and, if they aren't already, the club should be hugely embarrassed and should've withdrawn the badge immediately. This is not the first time this lion has been used in shrewsbury for a bad pice of design, if you look at the sign on the Cop, just above Barracks Passage, for the Lion & Tap you will notice the same gormless looking lion. I did 1 year of design at uni but quit because it wasn't challenging at all, for all my coursework i left it all until the last minute - stole research from the internet, messed around on photoshop for about an hour and wrote a load of bulls**t about the concept and design of it, handed it in and got a good grade. This is what these design companies do, they're just a bunch of lazy f***wits who are conning people out of thousands of pounds, just look at the olympics logo or the tories' new logo which someone described as "that looks like something my 5 year old daughter could draw".
death to design companies

The FACT (and it is a fact) that they stole the image from clipart is an absoulte p**s take and, if they aren't already, the club should be hugely embarrassed and should've withdrawn the badge immediately. I doubt very much that they stole it, and they probably have secured the rights to use it. But that doesn't take away from the fact that this is not an original piece of work but a piece of art that has been around for many years. It has no connection with the club. I can't see this now being changed for next season, whatever is said. But it is annoying that the designer has fobbed the club of with a piece of old art and the club crowed about the new badge before fans pointed this out to them.

The Middlesborough one has received a lot of criticism.
I do not like the Villa one at all.
The Derby one is OK.
The thing that always seems to be the case is that some people don't like it and some people do.
I would like to know how many of the local population of Shrewsbury actually know what a Loggerhead is? It appears the experts can't agree.
I understand the criticism relating to the use of clip art, but at the same time do we expect someone to go to Chester Zoo and do a real life sketch? Seems a bit odd to me.
Kids know Lenny the Lion, Kids buy merchandise, the Lion is now our badge, I can see the link. Fans didn't go mental because we did not have Lenny the Leopard who was attacking the traditions of our proud club. The crest and the mascot are the same animal now - which does make a level of sense.

Basing the design of the club badge on a mascot is a great idea ;D
Who needs history when you can have a fluffy animal.

This is an interesting discussion actually - what is a Loggerhead? "Pimbley's Dictionary of Heraldry" www.digiserve.com/heraldry/pimb_l.htm"Lion - The lion is the most popular beast in heraldry. He appears in the arms of Great Britian, Denmark, Spain, Holland, Bohemia, Saxony and numerous lesser countries. As early as 1127 Henry I used the lion as an ornament on a shield. Of the 918 bannerets of Edward II, 225 bore lions. The early English heralds seem to have confused the lion with the leopard. While never drawn spotted as the real leopard, he was described in most attitudes as leo-pardé, or a lion as a leopard." Has STFC actually made good a mistake of an early English herald?!!

loggerhead 1. A blockhead; a dunce; a numskull.
2. A spherical mass of iron, with a long handle, used to heat tar.
3. An upright piece of round timber, in a whaleboat, over which a turn of the line is taken when it is running out too fast.
4. <zoology> A very large marine turtle (Thalassochelys caretta, or caouana), common in the warmer parts of the Atlantic Ocean, from Brazil to Cape Cod; called also logger-headed turtle.
5. <zoology> An American shrike (Lanius Ludovicianus), similar to the butcher bird, but smaller. See Shrike. To be at loggerheads, To fall to loggerheads, or To go to loggerheads, to quarrel; to be at strife.

I'm not sure but I think the loggerheads connection with Shrewsbury goes back many many years to the early days of the Shropshire Yeomanry (http://kellybadge.co.uk/Stock/armour.htm) then search Shropshire.
Incidently the White House in the USA got its name because of the Shropshires (they tried to burn the house down)..
The loggerheads pub in Shrewsbury has the loggerheads (actually leopards) on their sign and the pub is around 200 years old so thevye been about for quite a while.

This is good, from the "International Civic Heraldry Website" - seems a little confused...
"SHROPSHIRE
Origin/meaning : The leopards' faces in these arms were adopted by the County Council in 1895 from the Borough of Shrewsbury (Azure, 3 leopards' faces Or). It is only in the incorporation of the ermine that the County arms differ from those of the Borough. The heads appear on the fifteenth century seal of the Corporation but their origin is unknown. They may have been derived from the Royal Arms, or from the Arms of De La Pole, Earls of Suffork in the fourteenth century (Azure, a chevron, and three leopards' faces Or), or arms of some local family. The heads are often referred to as "the loggerheads". This originates presumably in the practice of carving some such motif on the head of the log used as a battering ram. "
"SHREWSBURY AND ATCHAM
Origin/meaning :
The arms are a combination of the lion heads of the old Shrewsbury coat of arms and the badge of Atcham (bridge). "

Fans didn't go mental because we did not have Lenny the Leopard who was attacking the traditions of our proud club. The crest and the mascot are the same animal now - which does make a level of sense. I think this is about the folk who support Shrewsbury Town Football Club rather than the local population of Shrewsbury isn't it? And from the comments on here its clear that the majority do not like the new badge (whether because it’s a clipart or whether because it’s a lion or maybe because we have STFC written for no reason at all)... And if you have commissioned a designer to create a new crest for the club then it should be new and unique, not a 2nd hand piece of clipart. To suggest that a designer should not create something new doesn’t make sense to me, that’s what they do, that’s what you pay them for. I do wonder whether any other of the 91 league clubs have looked to the internet or Microsoft word for the inspiration for the new club crest? I suspect not and you can understand why. Maybe a trip to Chester Zoo would have helped...but its clear that the designer went no further than a quick search on his computer for inspiration for the new crest...which is shocking. As soon as the club found out that it was nothing more than a 2nd hand piece of clipart they should have asked the designer to go back and create something new and unique to STFC... I think its awful but its easy to get a badge sorted out that can be stuck over it. I'll look to get them sorted with the crest Dan F created with the Loggerheads replacing the Lion bar and just stick that on anything I buy from A-Line (who mention on their website that merchandise will be availble on their website in early July)...

The old Villa one is quality compared to the new one, incidently it looks like something a school kid has done (no offence school kids). The Derby one is plain and boring and it almost looks like it could have been done by the bloke who did ours. The Boro one is great, it looks quality. Dont get me wrong, I'd support the shrews if they wore pink and had barbie as the crest. Change is inevitable, new stadium new era, things move on and I am sure in years to come the badge will become just as loved as the famous glorious loggerheads With the history of Shrewsbury (town as well as FC) it needed somethign fierce and ferrocious, well, a bit like our famous glorious loggerheads

And if you have commissioned a designer to create a new crest for the club then it should be new and unique, not a 2nd hand piece of clipart. that's the loggerheads screwed then. design is about personal taste, dave mentions the olympic logo and doesn't like it but i think it's superb. it's very now and reflects a lot of what is going on musically with bands like the klaxons and hadoukem!. was speaking about it the other night with my mate who is a designer and we both loved it bout couldn't work out how it had won something that is usally so conservative. i loved all the 'our readers have done better' that were on the news and in the papers the other day, i think it was itv who showed some designs that had been sent in and said they were a much better option for the olympic logo. out of 10 about 7 had the london underground sign in and one was a straight rip off of the barcelona olympics logo.

the new badge is atrocious. i'm not too bothered (perhaps miffed is a better word) about losing the loggerheads, but replacing it with clipart, in such a derivative circular design, AND putting the name of the club TWICE on the badge, is: 1) amateur 2) embarrassing 3) sloppy 4) etc etc. It must be changed as soon as possible. every time i walk down wyle cop now, instead of thinking of our famous song, i see that bloody pub sign and think " "

Entirely different story to the new clipart Lion... so you are agreeing that the loggerheads isn't usuable as a copyrighted logo for the club? This is the information we have from the club so we have to accept that. But that doesnt mean that the new crest is any good. Also, I do not think the club needed to change from the current badge to be honest. How much, if anything, did they loose out on at Wembley? The biggest game in Town's history and I doubt very much they they lost out on a vast amount of funds from other vendors. I certainly didnt see a great amount of fans with owt sold from the street vendors... A question for you. Do you think its perfectly acceptable for a designer commissioned by the club to create a new crest has taken a 2nd hand piece of clipart (this is not his own work) from either the web or another application, manipulated it (and not a great deal at that) and then provide this to the club as a new crest? Providing nothing that is his own work, nothing new, nothing unique to the club. Are you happy that the new club crest is not unique, is not our own? If so, fair play...we'll just have to agree to disagree...
