Well it looks like the recession is over now as married couples are now to get tax breaks to make up for the child benefit cut. Seems policy is being made on a who shouts the loudest basis at the moment

I can see the benefit of not having means testing for the simple reason of the costs involved. That said, my wife and I each work full time with a household income of 76,500 a year. Rightly or wrongly, with two kids, we've always seen child benefit as something of a luxury, rather than a necessity. With the austerity agenda of the coalition government I had presumed that we would miss out on child benefit with, frankly, it going to those much more needy than ourselves. However, as both my wife and I earn less than the new threshhold we'll still benefit whereas, as pointed out, single income families who earn considerable less may actually miss out. I can't help feeling that's a little unfair but perhaps aimed at keeping the middle class tory voters (not I or my wife I should add) happy.

I generally feel this has not been done right. What they are basically saying is if a single man earns £50,000 a year then his work does not work they get nothing, meanwhile both parents could work earning £30,000 a year each and get the full amount.
And also is there anyting that is going to stop parents that keep having children just to rake in the extra money.
I generally feel child benefit should be limited to 2 children imo.
£20.30 a week first child then £13.40 a week for the 2nd child chose to have another after that child you are on your own.
Why should we fund people who can't keep their legs closed or are too lazy to for contraception or who just want more and more money of the taxpayer?
I feel there should a household cap of £60,000 a year for CB imo. If you are well off you should easily be able to afford daycare.

The family allowance has in my memory been paid to the mother. Maybe fairer to stop paying family allowance if the mother earns more than £44,000. Lets remember this is a Cameron / Osborne broken promise. What next my winter fuel payment and my free bus pass. Its not a 'free' bus pass, someone is paying for it aren't they Of course, I paid for my own , it took me over 50 years to pay for it - from the day I started work until got it at age 65.

Why not start it immediately or from April 2011 if they're serious? The Benefits Agency and the DWP staff numbers are being decimated in the next 6 - 9 monts. No chance of having it in 2011, Ive spoken to some there in the last 24 hours who doubt whether it can be geared up to for 1/4/2013 as the staff that remain are all hands to the pump firefighting on the old system. Ratters, The Benefits Agency ceased to exist about 10 years ago and DWP staff have nothing to do with the payment of Child Benefit. On a serious note it will be interesting to see what effect the new Government policies have on the number of DWP staff when the universal benefit comes in.

OK, for Benefits Agency thesedays read Job Centre Plus ( but I still get work corrospondence from them weekly on letters headed "Benefits Agency" - will you tell them Martin or Shall I ) Yes HM Inland Revenue deal with child benefit at the moment -are you suggesting they will be paying universal benefits when they come in rather than the DWP which is what I was alluding to?

Very surprised that Theresa May is in the cabinet. New hairdo but inside her head is harder to fix.

I was wondering. It has been talked about as a "credit" payment which would seem to indicate HMRC being responsible for it. Also means if HMRC do it it becomes part of the tax system so any errors can be reclaimed. The Child Benefit switch I think would be pretty easy as it is just a case of changing the computer programme rather than a whole host of manual changes.

NO, it has'nt been thought through thoroughly, you only had to see Cameroon being interviewed and the way he struggled to answer the question. And it was a question which anyone with a modicum of sense would ask, surely he should have forseen the question and prepared an answer. Knee jerk politics IMO, and i believe his attempt at clawing back the deficit is "too much, too soon". Nice to see the Banking fraternity are still paying themselves big bonus' though.

I'm not defending the bonuses, but note £4.1Bn of that will be going into the tax coffers.
Tighter regulation is definately needed on the banks, but at the same time the real issue here is that the UK needs to diversify away from it's dependancy on the financial services industry.

" I want to make London the Banking and Finance centre of the world" Some silly cow from Grantham in 1980............................... That should still be the want, but with tighter regulation. Trying to blame the banking crisis on the Iron lady is really clutching at straws Reg. The want should also be to make the UK the business pinnacle for other worldwide industries.

Banking pre 1980 was altogether better regulated, the banking crisis is due to sloppy practices introduced then aimed at profit maximisation by the greedy bankers (not rhyming slang ) She was PM when it all started...........................

so now it turns out that any money saved by the child benefit changes, will be far out weighed by the cost of the new married couples allowance thats to be introduced Yes, that about it. As I understand it £1 Billion saved from Child Benefit and £1.6 Billion spent to say sorry!!

Are you talking about the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1987? Even thought the most important move on the repeal of that Act that impacted mortgage-backed lending was in 1999? When Labour were in power. Must admit I don't know an awful lot on the details of those acts so maybe you can fill me in on the detail? Or Sean might know something around this subject....

Just a thought..........not mine I might add but one of the business experts in the Sunday times, in the future there is now a two fold incentive for the sniffling little git to lower the threshold at which Higher Rate Income tax becomes payable. He's not that devious......................is he
