"INDEX" Catalogue shops! Bought a new gas cooker for my mother's house from them a couple of weeks ago. I paid extra to have the old cooker taken away, the carriers didn't take it away! The general enquiry people tell me to ring my local council to arange collection and seem quite surprised when I refuse and point out that I have already paid them for that service and it is their responsibility! Now, no-one from "Connection" will return my calls, I feel an assertive letter coming on!!

What's the matter Ant? They haven't asked you for a little bit of tax have they? Come on you scrounging student. Cough up and come live in the real world!! ;D
SNFC - write a letter marked "private and confidential" for the attention of the manager. Give them 48 hours to sort it out, otherwise you will be taking it to trading standards. Also threaten them with consumer magazines and programmes.
This seems to work the majority of times. They hate bad press and will normally do all they can to avoid it. If you are nice you get nowhere. Only ultimatums work with these people as once they have your money they just do not care.

Call me Victor Meldrew, but in the last few months I have complained to:
Tesco Trafford Primary health Care trust Halifax bank O2 Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Reg Vardy (car sales)
In no instance has there been a satisfactory response. basically most big organisations don't give a toss despite all the rubbish they spout about customer service.
Ironically, I have found the Inland Revenue OK and I'd give a pat on the back to Alton Towers.

Yes, but why would you want to eat there again? Simply because it's free! I'll have the pizza this time. Surely you can't go wrong with that? And we won't be having starters either!

Education! Education! Education!!! Don't start me off on the DFEE- or I'll blow a fuse!!! I've had it with DFEE initiatives! I'm too old and experienced not to read through the hidden agendas. And old and experienced enough to know what works and what doesn't work. The name of the game is to make parents think they (The Government of the day- and they're just as bad whatever party is in) is making an impact and improving standards. Sometimes, some initiatives DO improve matters- but a lot of it is short-termism- methods that will ensure that young children learn to read and write as quickly as possible so that they "perform" in the tests at Age 7- but it's a short-cut; a cheat, in fact- and they lose out on developing real, useful skillls. It all falls apart for all but the brighter ones, who "survive" it. That's what I'm now, as a Special Needs teacher, trying to put right- three yeras of institutionalised bad teaching methods that encourage guessing and inaccuracy! It makes me REALLY mad- because so many kids suffer because of it, and end up struggling. Of course, as with any job, the ones that end up inventing initiatives for others to follow, like obedient sheep, are the ones who (a) Couldn't hack it themselves- couldn't manage a classroom, or teach. (b) If they could teach, at one time , they've lost touch with the realities of the job! Rant Over!!!!

Inland revenue for having sent me a form asking for my employment history. I have had the same letter maybe 4 times now and filled it in the same every time. How many copies do they need?
Student loans for repeatedly sending my Uni cheques to Stoke On Trent College when I was studying at Staffordshire Uni, Stafford. It also now turns out they forgot to tell the Inland Revenue I was a student for three years so perhaps that's why they keep sending e letters.
People who work at Shrewsbury Train station. You would be surprised how often they know a train is late / cancelled yet they will still play announcements saying the train is coming.
Telford train station staff. At least the Shrewsbury lot do have announcements, Telford don't bother.
Wolves station staff. Don't get me started...
Brum station people. Every train that enters on time leaves late (or not at all).
Nuneaton station workers. Two minutes after the train is due to arrive, they post a message saying it's running 2 minutes late. Two minutes later they update the screen to show its now due in another 2 minutes. This is repeaded for an hour till the train finally arrives.
The bus driver who left Shrewsbury early making me miss my bus to Middletown last week.
The vets the cat went to. A £150 operation has cost nearer £300. If they had told me that beforehand I would have had it put down.

Beware of barkleys bank - they are simpley useless!!!!
3 times i had to ring them about a problem that was all there fault and now its still not fixed and cosing me £7.99 a month
Then they set up the wrong account, never sent a check book, mixed my adress up, canceled an old account that i wanted open and generally acted with a we dont really care attitude every time i ring!!!
and im really with xcraigx on Brum station - never never expect a train at the time its suposed to be there - Its like this The 4.07 (no earlyer than 4.15) The 4.37 (the best of the rush hour trains but still normally late by 10 mins) The 17.07 - (normally 20 mins late) The 17.34 - (aviod this train at all costs, its the stopper, and its never been on time in my recolection and at least 10 times it does not leave due to a driver shortage - best of waiting for....) The 18.07 - ( it might be on time but get stuck behind the stopper train and this take for EVER!!) After that it just the odd delay
and im not kidding Brum new street operates like that every single day of the year - oh and done even bother if there is the slightest bit of snow!!!!

Glyn, On banking can I suggest you join First Direct. I was getting seriously peed off with TSB (as they still were then). Inflexible and never listened to what the customer wanted (certainly in my case). First Direct have been a breath of fresh air. We have not had one problem with them. Always there, always curteous, always helpful. And when you swop over banks to them they take all the hassle out of it by doing the paper work for you to change over all the direct debits / standing orders. I would highly recommend them to anyone. (I wonder if they will pay me for this? : .

The MOD Faceless barstewards so far from reality it's untrue, constantly asking the Armed Forces to do more on less. Lucky we've all got a sense of humour in the forces. Like they say, "If you can't take a joke you shouldn't have joined up" ;D Here's to the services

Go to your local library, get the details of the chief exec. from the company registers and ring him/her at home each time you receive no reply from customer services. Try to do this when you expect he/she is just about to sit down to dinner.

The only way I got action from S&N was when I contacted the Managing Director. This reminds me of a story from many years ago. My mate had a Rover car that kept breaking down and the garage couldn't fix it and refused to exchange it. One night he was driving to a formal do wearing his dickey bow and dinner jacket when the car broke down again. He opened the bonnet and was sprayed by a stream of hot oil. He was fuming at work next morning and I said 'why don't you ring Michael Edwardes' (the CEO of Rover). He tried and to our astonishment was connected to Mr Edwardes. No happy ending though, Edwardes just referred him to the garage where he bought the car
