Hi
Money here at the club is very tight as you all know, so my job is part marketing, part professional scrounger so here goes.
Cue the violin music.
Last Friday whilst showing a sponsor the ground I bumped into Richard ( Groundsman ) attacking some metal poles with an angle grinder.
Richard looked very anxious about the job he was undertaking so I waited until later to ask him what the problem was. It seems the goal posts that we currently use at the meadow have deteriorated to such an extent that they may be unusable for part if not all of the forthcoming season.
This presents a slight problem of course as coca cola league 2 does not permit the use of jumpers as goalposts for league football.
Richard has a dream though, ( violin music building ) a dream to have the best goalposts in the whole of the land and be the envy of all groundsmen as far as the eye can see.
Ok enough, basically we really do need to buy some new goals and Richard has pointed out that it would be fantastic to have a set of Euro Goals. These are the same goals as used in Euro 2004 ( box shape nets ) they last for an eternity and look very good. The premiership clubs use them too.
I just wanted some feedback on this idea to guage if it will work or not and would welcome everyone's thoughts on this :
Could we sell shares in the goalposts to fans ? say £10 a time which included a certificate to say that they own 2% of the goals at the meadow ? the goals cost £1600 + vat which means 180 people taking us up on it.
The goals would move with us to the new ground so it would be a long term investment ! but in your view would it work ?
Plan B is to source corporate sponsorship.
Look forward to your feedback.
Cheers
Mark

I'd certainly buy a 2% share in the goalposts! and i reckon you could get 180 others to do it at a tenner a go

at £10 a go I reckon there would be good demand
and if it was available on the open day then you would have a far better chance of response
AND it would give you a database of people for when you do the "buy a brick" for the New Meadow!

Knowing my luck, the goals I'd invest in would be the one's the opposition always score in

Mark - less money up front, but how about 'Sponsor a goal to pay for the goals'?
Lots of clubs do 'sponsor a goal' in which you pay a set amount of money (you can set minimum of say 25p) for every goal that Shrewsbury score.
You can use the programme to get people/business's names printed.
At say 50-60 goals scored, this may be a go-er.

Also, totally agree with TBH that you need to get it up and running by open day. You may even tempt me to part with my cash

I am sure that the OSC could make a fairy big donation towards the cost
As we have our AGM next I will add it to the agenda for issues to be discussed

I'd be up for a Tenner (especially , if I could scrawl my signature on the post ). Mark , I suggest you keep a list of the offers now so they are not overlooked when the rush to sponsor starts on the Open Day !

im sure you could raise a few quid by auctioning the old goal posts That is an excellent idea How old are the goalposts? how many games have they seen? was that the goals Jemson curled the free kick into? was it the goal Victor Kasule hit his 25 yarder against Swindon into? are they the goals Arthur Rowley scored in? OK, it all got a a bit silly there, but there is certainly some mileage in that I bid £50 for the section of cross bar and post that Jemson nailed that free kick into!

Would be happy to contribute to this. Even happier if we could drop the money off at the club office as it suits us(easier for us out-of-town fans.) The idea of having a share certificate is a good one!
Perhaps you should also go ahead with a sponsor-a-goal scheme unrelated to the fundraising for the goalposts.

Those goalposts must be rare i've played at the GM many a time and have never seen diamond shape posts anywhere and i've played at league grounds all over the country, stick them on ebay see what they fetch, Whitters will deliver by hand to the winning bidder

Count me in for a tenner too! Perhaps one of the old goals could be auctioned in one piece, and the other cut up and signed by players as individual keepsakes? Could even do a "premium" set with wooden mounts
