I was there, enjoyed talking to some old mates - Pete Dolby, Peter Wall and Dave Pountney. Thought the service was just about right, but was slightly disappointed at the turn out, cosidering the current high profile which the club is enjoying, but maybe this is down to the fact, that it is so long since Arthur graced the Meadow.

I havent seen any mention of this memorial anywhere before this thread, so it could be people were simply unaware.

Wonderful service, and it was nice to pick up some gen on the big fella about what he was like as a man and a player / manager.
In particular, great to hear the speech from Peter Dolby who was my teacher at Mount Pleasant Junior School in the fourth year and also the games master (surprise, surprise!) This was 1979 and he was still heavily with the Town doing coaching and playing for the reserves still as a centre back.
I always felt I missed out somewhat when Arthur died as I was in Australia, and was therefore unable to pay my respects properly. It was great therefore to have this memorial service.
I too thought that the turnout was very disappointing. It has been on here and in the media. A great shame that more people weren't there.

Sadley the turn out was low as personally i would not have ever felt the need to go and pay repects to a player that i never saw play. Dont get me wrong i totally respect the man for all he did for the club but i feel no emotinal attachment that would make me want to go to a service for him - add to that the complete apathy there is for all things religion related in the UK today and there might be your reason That said - on a footbal side i would fight tooth and Nail to help get a Statue of the man at the NEw Meadow or some thing neamed after him Rowley Drive or Rowleys Rest (players Bar) Hope this has not offenced anyone - but you can see where im coming from Would the Turn out be more or less for say if Wayne Clarke Had Died recently - as more people still alive (or importatly young) have seen him play The man is still a footballing Legend!!!

Besides missing me out , which Newhwey Shrew kindly rectified, , Revap 2004 was also there (sporting his brand new car flag as he left).

The flag was the first one sold. Road tested it Saturday. The looks I got, reminded me of that Peugeot 206 advert! Service was excellent. Very moving. When Dolby said about Arthur looking down next Sunday, I was starting to fill up.
And the Priest was excellent.

I never saw Artur play (nor did I vote him STFC 'player of the century') but realise his huge significance to this football club - and that's why I have to disagree with Pricey.
Sitting at the peaceful Meadow surrounded by other Salop supporters, officials and former players, to hear a beautiful (and in no way overtly religious) service with superb readings, makes you accutely aware of how the football club is far bigger and more important than the 11 souls chosen to wear the shirt each week.
We need to hounour and remember our legends. The memorial service was a start, and a lovely gesture.
Hopefully next season the fans groups can devise more ways of doing so.
Random Rowley stat for the day:
* He is at number 19 in the all time list of managers who've led their team to wins in the FA Cup. Also in the top 20 are Matt Busby, Bill Shankly, Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough Joe Mercer, George Graham, Bobby Robson, Don Revie and Kenny Dalglish.

A true legend, I'd have gone if I was in Salop but I'm glad it went well.
Certainly agree there should be a statue of him at the NM.

Wasnt there unfortunatly.
But the significance of the man, can not be underestimated.
he is a legend in his own right. All time top league goalscorer 432, top goalscorer at Shrewsbury town and I think leicester City.
He continued to support Shrewsbury Town right upuntill he died, his last game being Bournemouth at home in December last season.
Memorial services are less abou the religion and more about remebering a person.
Pricey does this mean you feel no attachment to Rememberence Sunday???

Exactly right Gareth - It would be great to have a classy bronze statute of him outside/or on the approach to the new meadow (similar to the bremner one at leeds perhaps -thought I've not seen that one in person only form pics).
I never saw him either but he is our equivelent of a Clough/Shankly.

Stupid thing to compare rob - hundread of thousands in facr millions of men and women who died to keep this country safe from invasion and war against a man who played football - dont put words in my mouth mate Im might not be riligious but it done not stop me "remembering" Ps i only tried to give a reason for the low attendance like some one asked for not to slag the man off read the post again

yes but your excuse, applies to remeberence sunday
I never met my grandfathers who faught in that war or 95% of the other soldiers, therefore I'm not emotionaly attached as you say, so that might be a reason for moving on with life and disbanding Rememberemce Sunday???
You cant say that this applies to one situation yet doesnt apply to another...

A rememberance service for some thing much much much more worthwhile
Thats the point i would make there - they guy was a legend yes but did no more for the Uk and any one of the millions that died bravely fighing for the independance to be able to play football years later!!!!

How can you say one rememberence service is more worthwhile than another? They remember human beings who had an effect on other peoples lives. Yes Pricey i do indeed agree with you, was just trying to make you think about how what you'd written could be mistaken.
