And Duncowshrew,i see Mr Quinn states it was a good performance and because we drawed at home we will stand a better chance at the Buckshead?. He must of seen a different game of football on Sat,than me.I always thought a good pitch ,fine weather and a great crowd of 6000+ and a full squad should give you some kind of advantage at home

First of all those good old days..... I wasnt around but I know for a fact that STFC was incredibly badly supported by the Town in the good old days, as for passion well I think not...
As for Town being so brilliant, well Duncow, ever thought that a large part of the reason that Town managed to hold their own against the big guns was because Salop when playing away used to get a cut of the gate. You can not underestimate the importance of this to smaller clubs like STFC.
As is well known clubs can often punch above their weight for a few years, but often end up outliving their means, and spending the next 10 years or so trying to recover from the high life. STFC nearly went under in the early to mid 90s because the club had once lived the high life and thought it could again. Remember the quick fire sales of Throb, Stevo and Walton???
Also without a doubt Gay meadow has held STFC back. We see all around us these new tinpot grounds, yes their ugly, but they have co-orperate facilities, they have social clubs, they have parking, car boot sales and decent club shops. Just about everything Gay meadow doesnt have.
To be honest I'm quite happy to see Salop bumbleing about in division 2 and 3 as long as the club has a chance to slowly expand in a measured and planned out way, whilst the team is playing decent football.
I went to Forrest, where because the club lives in its old glory it has over the years felt the need to "re-establish" itself, now what they have is a team struggling to win games, lost most of its decent young players, struggling to hold onto Reid and Dawson, relying on a decrepid Des Walker, and struggling to meet loan repayments on debts of £20mill. Yes division 1 football is lovely but not if its going to cost the supporter £22!!! (thats how much they charge for adults)
people must remember that in certain respects STFC is just a provincial club with a local fan base. Shropshire and mid wales is a very rural area and any growth is going to be slow, we're a long way from city slickers willing to pump obscene amounts of cash into the club.

For once I'm going to agree with some of what Skipwith Rob says.
After the first couple of years in Div 1 the support was very disappointing, and there were plenty of moaners in those days as well. They thought that if we can win at West Ham or Chelsea once we should always win at Cambridge, Grimsby, Portsmouth etc. (all places where I saw some pretty passionless displays in Div 1)
The one thing I would say about that time was that most of the players lived in the Town, and were a tight group who played and socialised together. Now they are a bunch of strangers who meet a few times a week.
But there was still plenty of passion when we scored on Saturday, players don't like losing at any level.

Aside to the 'where we should be' arguement, I think alot of this thread boils down to the passion (or lack of) showed by the players on Saturday, I'm not talking about celebrating goals either.
It's down to running your balls off for 90 minutes and coming off at the end of the game knowing that you've given your all- and at full time 3 maybe 4 STFC players could say they had given it there all. The players almost seemed complecent that we were playing against our local rivals in a quater final and that they played it 'like just another game of football'.
I wanted Chic back at the meadow to show the players how the old STFC used to play back- the passion, the pride and most of all the desire to win and this I'm afraid, is just not showing in our boys. They have not let the club down but I think most just do not seem proud in putting the blue and amber jersey on.

It really is impossible to compare the Div 1 days with the present. Although, im quite sure, on average the crowds were bigger, football in those days wasnt so family orientated as it is now. That has made a big difference for clubs like shrewsbury.
There were regular fights in the riverside, something I havent seen for years, which put a lot of people off. But they were great times. It is a time we should look back on with pride. But its the here and now that counts. £22 is a lot of money to go see a football match, but in context, we get charged £14 to sit down and watch Altringham.
There will always be moaners, its human nature, the point is, when were in div 1 we moaned cos we drew with chelsea, now we are moaning cos we drew with telford. Notice the difference anyone?

yes but we have the oppurtunity to stand.
Also concessions can go in any part of the ground.
At clubs like Forrest they are very limited in number and often shunted into the crap part of the ground.
